I received 2 homegrown passion fruits from a coworker and "ate them." Little did I know that the fruits are mostly hollow inside, containing many seeds coated with a tangy, acidic pulp. Like most people eating passion fruit for the first time I just stared at it not knowing what to do, and quickly found out that it's nearly impossible to separate the pulp from the seeds in your mouth, so I just chewed, cracking the seeds in the process, swallowed, and drank the juice left in the shell halves.
The protocol summarized: 1) save a few dozen seeds, 2) rub them between paper towels thrice to eliminate the pulp, 3) soak in a low ~1% hydrogen peroxide solution for a few minutes, 4) bake your soil at 350 F/177 C for 2 hours beforehand, 5) plant seeds after soil cools and water generously to soak the soil.
It took one month to see sprouts. Growth was slow in the month after that due to many factors, such as late fall low temperatures and weak direct sunlight hitting my balcony at an angle for 2 hours or less a day. I was underwatering at first with spray and squirt bottles while filling the bottom watering tray. Some leaves were yellow so I started floodwatering from the top once a week to great effect. At day 100 it is early January 2017 and the sun is at it's weakest; the temperature range is okay because this is in Southern California with a mild Mediterranean climate.

Hi. I spread the seeds on paper towels and let them dry for a couple of weeks or a year depending when I want to plant them. Then just bury the paper in the pot . Its how I do tomatoes too.

slow growth could also be due to nutrient deficiency. baking that soil might have also destroyed some beneficial bacteria :)

@The Senate I didnt say dirt I clearly said STERILE MEDIUM huge difference, anyway, yes any inert medium by definition according to merriam webster is hydroponic, listen he IS growing in soil, but when he baked it, the soil became sterile=inert medium. I'm not arguing with you I just want you to be informed,, i didn't like the 🤡 tho. How much digging did you do to find this www.aquasabi.com/aquascaping-wiki_substrate_soil, a substrate is what captive reptiles live on/in, or where microbes live, when you're talking about growing/gardening say medium not substrate please stop replying youre digging yourself deeper in your substrate lol

a hypothesis for getting the gunk off of the seeds en mass: Like tomatoes, you can try putting them into a cup with water with the gunk on them to sit for a day or two, during which the gunk will ferment and be able to be easily rinsed off in the sink, leaving you with clean seeds.

That was my thought. :) He loves his hydrogen peroxide. I think about the loquats that sprout in my yard from the neighbors tree. Nature is a beautiful thing. I do love that he shares the whole process. It's great to compare your plant to something after 1, 2, 18 weeks. I have some baby passion fruit and it's soooo slow growing. I think it's a nutrient deficiency. Pretty sure passion fruit is a heavy feeder.

Passion fruits are rarely eaten by themselves, because they are, indeed, a bit sour. They are mostly used for cocktails or desserts like mousses, cheesecakes, sorbets and things like that. You put the pulp on a mesh strainer and press it with the back of a spoon to collect the juice, and use that. I'm currently sprouting some seeds of the yellow fruit, that's why I found your videos. Now I know what to expect. Thank you.

in my country you would be having ready fruits after 3_4 months. The seeds grow into seedlings withing a week and you transfer them to the main garden as they require enough space for their tendrils. They grow by climbing onto poles or anything else for support. It's very easy to plant and it's more expensive than most of the other fruits. we make juice out of them.

You don't really eat passion fruit raw. They make a marvelous juice, and using the juice you develop curds, cakes, soda, tea. It smell delicious too, and the seeds can be used to make a really good relaxing soap. Put all together pulp and seeds in the blender, add water and blend (it will destroy the seeds, so if they are wanted to plant, just keep some). Pass through a sieve and now you get the juice. Add sugar, and more water to control the acidity to your taste. You also can cook all the content of the fruit with the seeds, water and sugar, and the seeds get crunchy and you will enjoy to eat them.

@@TheMelvinWei Also the passion fruit is pretty good as a tranquilized and to insomnia, and to lower hight pressure. Love your peroxide tip, did you washed the seeds after that or just keep with the peroxide? Mines I put all the pulp inside watter and then I separate the seeds and let them dry after washed several times, after them dry they create a very dry skin and I just take with my hands and keep in a dry container, I will plant this week in Miami, still very hot here I hope they grow fast, I used to do the same way long time ago and get a beautiful plant.

Sad you probably had a few bad fruit. I find the flavor to be a lovely combo of floral & grapefruit. Ps- just let your soil be natural.... They grow in nature because of the beneficial nematodes, if you sterilize/kill the poor lil guys don't expect great results. PS leave the spider be, he would naturally take care of afids, spring tails, leaf miners ect. Good luck next time.

Wanted to know - got seeds to sprout but what comes after? In NY in summer here great weather they don't mind the morning light, but wanted to know how long it will take for the plant to develop into a grown plant. If it was a supermarket variety that I kept and had dried last year's batch which is thriving very well (got five to sprout ,) will the plants be developed into larger vines say by July? I have also a hybrid variety which only flowers though no fruit and is hardier. It dies back in the winter; it's indoors then anyway. Always bounces back. So yes, would like to know ; full sun I'm guessing and how much water? Any food or feed to supply it? The sprouts prefer a bit of moistened soil though nothing excessive I've found. So humidity will be higher soon, it should get much more light soon from July coming around. Please let me know what climate I can (re)produce for it whether synthetic or naturally? Would appreciate your input. Sorry for the lengthy question (s)!

I bought passionfruit seeds, and they instructed to make a cut in the seed coat. They actually said put the seed in hot water first to soften. Sounded like a lot of work, so I haven't done anything yet. I wonder if it would help them germinate faster than not doing anything with the seed coat?

I have to use a lot of soil so I use a cheap 55 steel barrel cooked over a fire pit with 8 inches of water at the bottom separated by a screen with moist soil at the top, and everything gets cooked well, up to 200 degrees F, which is perfect, its true you kill any microbiology but when dealing with indoor growing its best to kill everything because alot of pest can merge from the soil, such as fugus nats, mites, aphids, or even thrips, also algae can grow and stump your plants or cause your seedling to become really moist near the stem thus your seedling rot, but if your growing outdoors, I wouldn't bother cooking the soil since most of the pest well be eaten up by predators, I cant say cook the soil if you live in the big city where theres hardly any predators because without the pest there well be no predators. Hope this helps anyone

I wonder if the seeds were started in Pete pots which hold lots of moisture, then planted right into the pot, would that have made it easier to keep them moist? Would it benefit the seedlings to water then cover the soil with sterilized green moss to retain moisture? Also, what about monthly feeding (both foliar and direct soil) with a mix of food and water. I've been wanting to grow passion flower vine. Would adding bone meal to the soil help? And maybe a bit of sand to aid in water retention? Maybe I will try this but I'll maybe employ a greenhouse effect with a tent of sturdy clear plastic. Thank you for the informative video. It's given me a lot to think about :)
@TheMelvinWei
@TheMelvinWei 7 жыл бұрын
I think adding some sand would actually help water drain and wick away faster, unless you're just putting a thick layer of it on top of your soil or potting mix to block fungus gnats etc. Bone meal certainly helps I've heard, but you can also crush up some Tums or anything with lots of calcium carbonate in it like vitamin pills to provide for the calcium your plants need. Too much might affect the soil pH though. I think your moss idea is good. I have some recent developments that led me to think that underwatering or drying out of the top layer of potting mix really inhibited development, there are lots of big airspaces in potting mix that aren't present in real dirt.

Very nice result from your middle plant. If it had been me I would have used a cloche to cover the seeds from the start. I would agree, your plants were way under watered. These plants are VERY thirsty. Not sure when you did this video but I'd say at the 100 day point you could/should have transferred the central plant to a pot of its own. That would have achieved two things: fresh new compost with lots of nice nutrients and a total lack of competition for it to grow healthily on its own. Other than that a great video to show how to prepare seeds for sewing and the micro camera work was most interesting. Thanks a lot.

That was filmed in early October, the waning days of my avocado plant before it died. I eventually got soil infestations with bugs, and external bugs were landing on the leaves, with even a jewel wasp trying to burrow in there and lay an egg. I applied insecticide but the leaves kept dying. I tried moving the pot around to different locations with less sun. Eventually I put the pot in complete shade with only 3,000 lux max throughout the day, and it died after I came back from a 2 week vacation :(

I actually grew an avocado tree for over a year now I put it in water and soaked it with toothpicks on it then it took about 10 months for the stem to even come up and then when I planted it in soil, it still seems fine. On your next seed planing things. You should grow a dragon tree from seed. They live at around your area I think and can live up to Zone 9-12. It is sillier to the Joshua Tree seedling once its very young.

Do these produce fruit this way?
@TheMelvinWei

Stayed tuned and find out. I have heard of some growers getting fruit in 9 months but considering these never get any morning sun it probably won't happen. These vines are perennials so eventually they will get fruit with enough growth and time.

I live in Brazil and here fruits come faster. Just direct in the ground and no caring.

Hi! In HI, I grow purple lilikoi by planting the pulpy seeds right out of the fruit. No need to remove it, but within 3 days or so from removing from fruit Wait for it to grow (around 9 months for us) pick when slightly wrinkled. Make a puka in it and add small shot if shoyu, and enjoy!

Wouldn't recommend spraying the plant itself or even getting water on them as it brings on diseases. Just a tip my friend. Better off watering just the soil underneath and around it. Deep watering is best. Btw
