Regarding the time element, I find that if people want to try this for fun, then it is possible to grow ivy leaf standards within one year. However they are a bit brittle and will not cope with windy conditions. Ursula Key-Davis recommended that a wire hanging basket frame attached to the top of the stake helps support the head, and as soon as one lets them go a bit, they are capable of forming a nice weeping standard.

I trained a citronella into a standard Stands like 4ft tall. Wind keeps blowing it over lol
