I lined my basket with a mesh pop up hamper. It is working great so far. Gets air and good drainage both.

Dig a trench one spade wide and at least a foot deep keeping the waste soil nest to the trench. Plant in the bottom of the trench and the waste soil is close at hand when mixed with compost to dress the potatoes as needed. When all the soil/compost has been used you will be left with a path between the rows. Plant 2 or 3 at a time each week and you will have a continuous crop. Don't waste money on seed potatoes. Just use those from the supermarket shelf and chit in a paper bag in the airing cupboard. Cheap as chips!

Use weed barrier so air can pass thru. This will self prune and create better root system.

Hi Beautiful! Why don't you make some drainage holes at the bottom of the laundry basket? because you have drainage on the side, but not the bottom.

Instead of dirt I read that you can use straw and the claim is you'd get much larger crop?
@Foxlessmeadow

If it didn’t go well with this method, try not using the plastic or ink paper. Plastic is not breathable, and both are toxic. Try lining the basket with just soil and straw or as others suggest, the mesh laundry bags.

Also if you add sand to the soil, it helps keep the soil from packing too tightly around the plant and the potatoes.

Talk about making growing potatoes complicated...either grow with plastic liner or just thick liner of newspaper, but both is not necessary. Also be sure to have drainage holes on the bottom of the plastic liner. Potatoes will set in the lower section, so plain sand is not very nutritional for the growing potatoes.

Why would you put a plastic bag that would cause issues with drainage and conduct chemical issues into this basket when you could pack the sides with straw and allow the growth to come out the sides of the basket?
