Reminds me of when I used to visit the beaches in Maine. Often, a clump of drifting seaweed would float by and I'd pick it up. I'd then find my hand covered in these tiny crustaceans that were clutching to the seaweed. Interesting little critters, and quite harmless to hold.

@akcessdenied No, there is a constant inflow of new seawater, plus there is a standpipe on the side to allow rainwater to run out.

I placed an order for your amiphods about 2-3 months ago. I received 25 amphipods. I now have about 1,000 in there. These guys are potentially the best cuc members I have. They demolish all detritus, leftover fish/coral food, and algae. I see them come out in swarms after I feed. I’ll just watch a single amphipod steal one whole lps pellet. My tank is a young system and despite phosphate spikes, I haven’t experienced any algae at all. I think this is in large part to the amphipods. Every time I look in the tank I just see 20-30 or so grazing. They cover everything.

Yes, they can be much smaller. They are quite tiny when they first hatch out. Visible, but tiny. The one in your video looks like a mature adult amphipod.

Yes fishman101, I checked your vid. That looks like an amphipod. The arched back is one of the distinguishing features.

Ugh I have had issues with these. I lifted up a particularly bright ricordea and I had an amphipod that had fluorescence in his gut that was the same color as the ricordea! Time for a wrasse or two.

Hey, nice vid! Just watched it and it looks like you're off to a fine start. That crab might eat some beneficial worms and sandbed organisms so keep an eye on him:) Beautiful live rock, nice shallow sandbed. It's all good -- probably ready for some hardy beginner corals now!

(noobs here) last night I was fragging a torch coral that I just got from the stote, and let the glue dry, when I was about to put the coral back in tank, 4 of these crawl out of the coral, and 1 of them latch on my hand, I freak out, thought it was some kind of bristle worm, then throw all of them out. Thinking about dipping all of my corals. And then find I this video when looking for a video about copepods... Didn't know they are benificial to the tank

'Natures most effective grazers'.Sometimes I think I could set up a foot spa for tired and weary feet using these amphipods. The customer steps into a foot bath with a thousand of these to graze on their dirty feet. I'd call my spa 'A Step Too Far'

Great idea, Karl! Kind of like leech therapy for wound treatment, but far more appealing. It's worth a try!

Yes I saw that that article too, haha! There are certain amphipods that are flesh eaters. Either way I'll be trying it on myself first... Wish me luck...! One small step for man, a giant feast for amphipod kind!

I'm glad I watched your video and hope to shop your site! I have a 150g mixed reef tank that is bout 2 yrs old w/ 5"DSB and a small array of livestock. Problem is my sand/LR is devoid of fauna (macro) after having to eliminate dino/cyano and aptasia chemically. I want isopods/copepods/anthropods/polychraetic worms back! Do you offer a kit that will survive long enough to repopulate my tank?

They will eat algae for starters and detritus in the substrate of your tank. If they have hiding places, they will multply in your tank.

Make certain that parent Amphipods have an ample food supply (Red and Green seaweed) to discourage eating their babies. Also you can use graded plastic screens (like window screens) to separate babies from parents.
