As someone who thought growing rosemary was easy, I've managed to kill several in the past 3 years. It was a lot of trial and error and challenging in a non-mediterranean humid tropical environment but I eventually kept one alive for over a year now and darn proud of it. I found out that root rot was the main culprit in my past rosemary demise. I hope I can eventually see this one flower.

The leaves also lost their vibrant green color in strong sunlight and heat. I have a rosemary bush here in the south of Spain where it gets up to 43 centigrade with intense ultra-violet in summer and snows in winter. I _never_ water the bush or look after it at all - all I do is trim it down every year with a hedge trimmer. And every year it flowers and attracts loads of bees into the garden.

Here is the thing. I planted mid summer but horse manure is great for water retention. It did not do to great until fall and winter and next year it sprouted 3 more branches...this year I sold it...but not after giving everyone the 3rd degree about how they will love my plant. I keep listening to videos that say rosemary doesn't like rain but all the rosemary I have had thrives in rain and snow but gets hot and burnt in a lot of sun

I’ve found that rosemary is pretty sensitive to uneven watering. It doesn’t like soil that’s wet or completely dry. It wants light, but even, soil moisture (and good drainage). This is more critical when it’s in a container than when it’s in the ground, but drought or very wet conditions can kill rosemary in the ground, too.
@sheronrobinson15442 жыл бұрын
What kind of soil you use?
@danbev8542 Жыл бұрын
Agree about the moisture! I live in Mid Atlantic zone Z6b-7a. I read somewhere that indoor plants need ‘a little water every day’. I seldom manage daily, but water sparingly fairly often & it seems to work. For outside plants, ARP and Hill Hardy will winter over if sheltered in my area. A local friend thinks protecting the root ball is key. I cover my plants with old blankets in winter. Also - add a bit of lime to most herb plants. As to soil, I have heavy clay - not great for herbs!

Hi Kevin, I'm 77 and still gardening since a little girl. Reared our 4 children on fresh foods and herbs from our backyard garden. Subscribed here and enjoy. I have always grown Rosemary and share it. I struggle with digesting the pointed leaves. Even after they're dried the very ends where they attach to the branch there appears a seemingly woody tip. It takes a lot of time to fingernail clip those off. I'm thinking of creating a Rosemary powder with the dried leaves. Curious..... what are your thoughts that woody end of the leaves?. I like the idea of the Rosemary salt. I have, thru the years made herbal salts and it's great. Tks for all you do and teach; using your talents to the max :)

Enjoyed the video a lot, but i did want to let you know that rosemary can survive winters even in zone 7, provided its established a good root system. It truly is an incredibly hardy plant. I currently pick from one my apartment complex decided to plant, and ive seen it grow all year round, almost like an evergreen herb. My suggestion on your next herb would be Lemon Verbena; its such an underappreciated way of applying flavor without acidity in my opinion.

I removed a large overgrown rosemary bush from a border and left it lying on the lawn for a few days. Before disposal in the compost I took a tip and stuck it in the ground. I later forgot what I had done and it ended up beneath a large raspberry patch. When the leaves fell off the raspberry I found it again. In the middle of winter I dug it up shifted it to a herb garden and now it's a lush rosemary bush. Moral of the story rosemary is very hard to kill!

I've had zero problems in Central Florida climate with my outdoor rosemary. It practically takes care of its self. It slows down a bit during high precipitation periods, but the full sun and heat make up for it I think. If I notice any kind of undesirable pests/disease I'll chop it off before it spreads. So long as your soil is healthy and you pay attention you won't have any problems.

Here in GA 7b/8a, we have had our rosemary in a pot for five years with no problem at all. I also made rosemary salt from it, but I put the rosemary through the grinder by itself until it was "fine", then added it to a fine salt at a 1-1 ratio. This ratio allows the rosemary to really come through without too much salt ruining the dish. It's rosemary salt, not salty rosemary. 😁The 1-1 ratio works perfectly with steaks, roasted meats and potatoes.

I have 300 feet of rosemary on my terrace walls. Other than trimming it 4 times a year it is maintenance free. The bees go crazy for the flowers and the birds love it if you let it go to seed a bit.

Rosemary definitely thrives here in Georgia. My mom's got a legendary bush that's at least 5 years old and almost 5 feet tall.

Heh, I've been pampering my rosemary plants with overwatering. I'm determined to get it right this time. Spent too much buying them in pots.

I am only now growing rosemary but have seen enough comments of people saying do not pamper it. It is okay to not water or fertilize. It thrives on poor treatment.

I always wondered why people around here (Inland Empire of So CA) don’t use rosemary a lot more in their landscaping since it is soooo easy to grow in this area and is so pretty and fragrant. Gets big enough to make a nice small bush or hedge. And is always there to pluck a little piece and have some aromatherapy.

Totally correct - it's used a lot here in San Diego and I love that!

I keep trying to keep rosemary inside and it doesnt work well I can get a cutting to live for a year and it will get white mildew once got spider mites. I also didnt know they like being more dry so that is probably my problem they keep dying before they get a good size.

Did it get any direct sunlight inside? I used to have a rosemary on my outer window sill and it was doing great (until a new plant gave it powdery mildew, rosmary was the only one I didn't manage to save). But now I have to grow a new rosemary plant inside because I lost the window sill (when replacing my windows), and I'm wondering will it survive inside. It does get some direct sunlight, actually more in winter time, and less in spring and summer because the trees in front of my windows start blooming and being all leafy, making a lot of shade

Thanks! I just bought a Rosemary plant at Wegman's. I had no idea how to care for it, but this was super helpful!

Rosemary is said to help with memory. Rub a sprig in your hand and inhale. Also, rubbing in hand acts as an antibacterial of sorts. Do your research as I only remember this from reading it somewhere.

Great info. Pruning was good to know. I will say that I have rosemary outside in zone 6a and 6b (mid latitude USA), and both act as happy perennials.

@@randomrachael420 ... just a couple...but I have lived in several states and always planted Rosemary... right now just a couple of upright breeds: Blue and Gorzilla (a broader leaf version). I plant mine under my oak tree that shelters if from the rain/soggy conditions of South Florida.

A little rain never stops a gardener! I've a bit of a testimonial on the hardiness of Rosemary here in the Pacific NW. In my Portland Oregon garden (8b) I have grown rosemary *technically a sub shrub* for nearly 30 years in an exposed area near the street. My first plant, which I grew from seed, lived 8 years with no protection at all and very little care from me. It died one winter when we had a deeper cold that swept in with desiccating winter winds that we get here once in a while. Those winds freeze dried the needles and it died. Since then I have only had to cover my rosemary plants once or twice and other than that I just make sure the soil where they are planted drains well. To protect from freezing wrap with burlap. and be sure the plant is hydrated. Dry plants die more easily in freezing weather. Many many gardeners grow Rosemary here as a perennial plant, and even some in colder regions at the base of Mt Hood etc.. One reason it does so well here is that we are blessed with what is considered a classic Mediterranean climate. We have almost no measurable rainfall for 3 months beginning July 5th , and Rosemary LOVES, as do sage, thyme and others. We however also have clay based soils, which can be problematic unless they drain well, and mind does thankfully. Below is how I have also created better draining soil using the method Joy Creek Nursery came up with for their gardens. It has become a favorite method of soil amending here. Info on how to is below. TIP on soil prep if someone has heavier clay soil...add 1/4 minus 10 crushed rock, about 2" deep, with 2-3" of compost and dig into the top 6" of soil to help raise the soil level a bit and to enhance drainage. Works like a dream here. There are a lot of newer Rosemary varieties out I noticed.
