Sumo Mandarins are our favourite right now. They're the large, sweet and juicy variety originally from Japan. Seeds are hard to find since they are normally seedless, but I was lucky to collect a couple and successfully germinated them. #GrowingSumoMandarinsfromSeed #GrowSumoMandarins #SumoMandarins

There is a trick to getting “true to type” citrus from seed. The seeds are what’s called poly embryonic ( more than one) that’s why you have multiple seedlings from one seed. The Zygotic ( pollinated and not true to type) is usually the first to sprout and the largest and fastest growing, the nucellar seedlings (have only the mother plants genetics) are slower to sprout and grow and can have multiple sprouts. The nucellar is the one to grow if you want a true Sumo (Dekopon) tree. If you look up images of polyembryony seeds online it will help you understand. Good luck.

Oh that's interesting, thank you! I've never researched about them growing like that, I was just too happy to see them grew at all. Right now, I have 4 with two seedlings growing together. I'm too afraid to remove one, I might make mistake.
@itsasickness4939
@itsasickness4939 2 жыл бұрын
@@sweetnestdownunder you don’t have to remove. Just let them both grow. One will be a Dekopon and the other will be a hybrid but probably still delicious, and then you get to name it. “Sweet Nest Mandarin”has a nice ring to it.😊 Just be patient, it can take 3 to 10 years to get fruit from seed grown citrus.

@@itsasickness4939 That's exciting! And I'll even get to name the hybrid one 😊. I think this is worth the wait! Will do update videos in the future. I just like that feel when I get to say "10 years later..."

@@RayTayek Hi Ray, I didn't dry the seeds out, I just planted them right away. I planted them in winter (Sydney, Australia winter), and that seems to have worked out. They sprouted, I think after 2 or 3 weeks.

@@sweetnestdownunder Well, I grew a Texas Ruby Red grapefruit from a seed starting when I was 9 years old. It grew its first fruit when I was 47. (and boy was it the tastiest grapefruit I ever ate...but can't say whether it was worth the wait) On the Mediterranean island of Sardinia, people they build circular brick walls protecting the citrus they grow from seedlings. Apparently growing citrus from seeds are a generational undertaking.
@sweetnestdownunder
@sweetnestdownunder 2 жыл бұрын
@@odysseyarm7567 oh wow, that's definitely a long wait! But I would be willing just to try the tastiest fruit I would ever have 😊. I hope I get to live long enough to see my plants bear fruits (if not me then my son and maybe grandkids). My grandma had lots of fruit trees in her (Philippine) yard. I just really want to relive that feeling (happy, excited, satisfied, abundance) for having your own fruits. They were all tropical fruit trees though, so growing mandarins is going to be a challenge. Well, my sumos are still well, so I think I'm not that bad 😄.
