Panache Tiger did very well for me, grew and produced vigorously here in zone 9. It has one of the most upright growth habits of any fig I've seen -- a very handsome tree, as figs go. . The taste, I have heard described as raspberry jam, and from my experience, I'd agree. As mentioned by another commenter, Panache Tiger figs seemed to turn almost yellow when *fully* ripe. Perhaps if you'd waited another day or 2 to harvest, it would have been even better? Marseilles black sounds intriguing. Will have to look into it. Thank you!

Agree! These figs were not completely ripe; I was new to figs at the time and overly excited to taste the fruit. The summer crop does turn solid yellow but I've noticed the skin color does not always change in the fall even when the fruit is ripe. I'm thinking heat or lack of it in the cooler months may play a role. Marseille Black VS or any of the Chicago Hardy type figs are well worth growing IMO as they are very productive and produce wonderfully balanced berry flavored figs.

Love your videos, and that fact that your growing in 9b. I have a small backyard so on Wednesday I planted a Black Jack in a 20gal container. And put a Panache in the ground in the front yard. Can’t wait. Thanx for your videos.

lol....I took a week off and so did the figs. I'm hoping to be able to do some tastings soon but the figs need to cooperate. :) Panache is still the most sugary strawberry fig I have.

In a previous video (haven't time time to watch thru this), I believe you referenced that a negative to your panache tiger, though maybe otherwise your fav, was that it had fruit not regularly ripen...there is a technique that ancient Egyptian's (and other cultures with other fruit) successfully used to ripen their figs...they slashed several of them nearby . May signal the plant to ripen other fruit. But the real primary reason it works--confirmed thru carefully constructed experiments--is thru the release of chemicals, primarily ethylene gas...which even in small amt's can assist other nearby fruit to ripen more quickly.

Love your videos, thanks for taking the time to make them! I ordered my first four fig trees from Greg Peterson's fruit tree program. If I want to have a more bush like fig, where there are multiple limbs coming from the base, should I right away cut the figs down lower to the ground like a peach tree, hoping it will branch out the way I want? I just don't want a tree like fig for a few years then realize I have to cut it to the bottom. That might be hard for me to do when it's older!

Yes--in fact I will be doing a hard prune on this panache tiger as well and will likely film it to give others an idea of pruning practices. You should wait until the trees lose their leaves and go dormant before pruning. I would cut the tree low to the ground but make cuts just above nodes that are projecting on an angle you want growth as the tree will push new limbs in that direction in spring. It would be best to form a vase structure with low scaffolding limbs that can then support your new growth. Hope that helps! I'm in southern California and I planted a panache fig tree 6, months ago and it has not grown an inch it's gets plenty of water and sun what could be the problem? great video by the way very informative

Hi! Panache can be slower to get going than other varieties but once it starts, it will outgrow all other fig trees. My young panache put a lot of growth on in months 10+ in the ground. I did feed it a lot the first year and gave this fig variety more water than any other. I fertilized every two weeks during the growing season. To get some growth this year, you might want to give it fish fertilizer, worm castings or a different mild balanced organic fertilizer (I use the Dr Earths fruit fertilizer) every 2 weeks or so. Fig trees are heavy feeders I have found in our warm climate and do really well with growth and fruit production when I feed regularly. If you feed regularly, the other possibility is that there is something wrong with the plant. Is it in the ground or a pot? Could it be root bound? What size pot did you buy it in? Oddly enough, I have find the larger the size of the plant at planting, the longer the plant will take to root out. It's the small ones (1 gallon) that seem to really have taken off for me in a short amount of time.

Hi! Fortunately fig fruits do not drop off from storms/wind like other fruit can (e.g. peaches, apricots, acerola, etc.). Fig fruit will dry out however in our triple digit heat before ripening properly if the tree is not regularly watered. I find watering lightly daily in those temps results in consistent high fruit quality.

nickka2009 the nursery I bought it from did not indicate the strain but the characteristics of the fig in taste indicate it is mbvs. It remains in my top 3 list.

I need help, urgently. One of my fig trees that reproduced it by cut, I passed it to pot and had many roots, I have 2 semans like that, but now it is losing leaves in one of the branches, the other leaves of the other branch (only has 2) they feel firm . I'm not an expert and have lost cuttings myself. Up potting can be traumatic for the fig as it sends it into dry air. Just going from indoor lights to actual sun can cause a rooted cutting to drop all leaves and regrow as it adjusts to new conditions. Don't fret too much on your first try and experiment until you find what works. Dropped leaves when you have strong ones in place is not reason for panic. It may just be adapting. If the plant drops all leaves, then consider creating a humidity dome with a plastic bag and holes for ventilation. That can help acclimate a plant from a bin to normal air in a slower fashion.

How will you prune the tiger fig for Next years growth??

The tree is currently at 9' tall; I already topped it a bit. I'm aiming to maintain 12-15' height and full canopy in general in the orchard. I was not planning on much pruning other than taking it to one central leader and topping a few more feet to maybe 5'. I unexpectedly am getting some high end cuttings this week so I'll be using the panache to do some rind bark grafts. For this, I'll leave a couple limbs but chop to 2' or so to transition to the new varieties.

Hi. Fig trees can be grown in ground in USDA zones 8+. If you are in one of those zones, you are in luck as they require little care and produce well. There are varieties that are more well suited to dry climates than humid ones. If you are in a dry climate like Phoenix, my fig channel may give you ideas of cultivars to grow. If you are in a warm coastal climate like Southern California, you can likely grow any variety with success.

Both are excellent dark berry flavor varieties but differ in color, taste, size, origin, skin, etc. Marseilles Black is easier and much cheaper to source than Black Madeira. Marseilles Black also seems to be easier to grow/more productive at least in my 9B climate.

Sorry but my 2018 Panache Tiger figs already fruited earlier this year. It's second main crop may ripen in a month or 2. I am not a commercial grower; just a fruit enthusiast with a backyard garden and do not sell fruit.

If one is inclined, there is a way to measure using a brix refactometer. I have never invested in one. I just grow what tastes good. These are both berry figs, not sugar figs so if you are looking for a fig with the highest brix score then you might want to look into sugar figs like the classic celeste.

Thanks! I have a green ischia in the ground; planted Fall 2016. Some say it is the same as strawberry verte but if not very similar. I was excited to get this variety because it is supposed to be one of the sweetest berry figs. For whatever reason, it produced nothing for me this past year. It seems to be very slow growing. I am hoping it will eventually become a productive tree for me.

I promise you I have both Fig Trees (In the Ground) Green I and Strawberry V. they are both good, but I have them planted right beside each other and in my opinion I think S.V. is superior, maybe not as fast grower as G.I.. Hope this helps. Congrats on some beautiful Fig Trees. : )
