Thank you for your content. I'm new at gardening and am learning so much from your information. I am growing Cherokee purple for the first time and it's doing exactly what you said. The plant is only about a foot tall and a cluster of flowers and tomatoes are forming on the top of the main stem. I don't know if it will keep growing due to this reason. I am single stemming the plant so I wonder if I should wait for a sucker to grow and let it become a new leader. Any advice? I know your video is 3 years ago but I do hope you will be able to answer my question. Thank you.
@PepplesPotager Жыл бұрын
Yeah I would let another sucker grow and try using that as the main stem. I am actually growing more cherokee purples this year myself. And you are welcome. Thank you for watching my content. I haven't been doing as much content lately but I plan on doing full walthrough of the potager probably this weekend.

Did you buy the trellis or did you build it? If you built it do you have a video?
@PepplesPotager Жыл бұрын
I built it myself. I used 8 foot 2x3 boards that I cut to whatever length I needed and stapled vinyl wire fencing to it. Sorry. I did not do a video.

Awesome stuff, thank you. What other companion plants have you used in/near that bed? I spotted the basil?
@PepplesPotager4 жыл бұрын
I didn't use as many companion plants this year as I usually do. I just didn't get around to it, but in the past I've used basil, thyme, marigolds, lavender, nasturtium, and zennias. Thank you for watching!

I do not get a lot of Cherokee purples and the ones I do get are all on the bottom part. Why?
@denantonow Жыл бұрын
I had some issues with them last year, many seedlings died during transplantation and the first bloom didn’t give the fruits. Can you explain that?
@PepplesPotager Жыл бұрын
Could've been environmental conditions or some sort of fungal issues in the soil.
@PepplesPotager Жыл бұрын
Or transplant shock.
@benjamindees Жыл бұрын
Tomatoes need to be hardened-off before transplanting. I also put shade cloth over my Cherokee Purples for a couple of weeks after planting, though it depends on your climate and it seems I might be the only one who does that.
@rebekaaimee4 жыл бұрын
Do you tie these to the trellis or weave the main stem through?
@PepplesPotager4 жыл бұрын
I tied them to the trellis using green garden twine. I recently started using stretchy garden ribbon. It works very well. Thanks for watching!

@@PepplesPotager funnily enough, our summers are so harsh, most people’s veggie gardening stops during summer because of the heat, bugs & disease. I’ve been pretty lucky but super keen for this new wave of seeds to sprout!

Doesn't early picking make the flavor blah! Even with ripening inside, I can't seem to get good flavor
@PepplesPotager4 жыл бұрын
No. Once tomatoes start changing color they are as sweet as they're going to be when they fully ripen. The plant stops feeding nutrients to the tomato when it starts to ripen. Vine ripened tomatoes are a myth. Little to no difference in taste if left on the vine. Although some will say otherwise. Guess it's a matter opinion or taste. Everyone's different. Thanks for watching!

Dude.....that tomato is a MUTANT tomato....lol Do you live near a nuclear plant? Lol And does that tomatoes holes have bite marks or do you have a calcium deficiency? Use a crushed up Tums on those with dry holes, to prevent anymore of that occurring. And what they taste like? Juicy or dry flesh? Sweet or bitter? Hard skin or easily cut?
@PepplesPotager4 жыл бұрын
No I don't live near a nuclear power plant lol. These are both old heirloom varieties that are prone to megablooms which are clusters of tomatoes flowers that merged together. They can form some crazy looking tomatoes though and holes where megablooms merged. The Cherokee Purple are the best tasting tomato I've ever had. Sweet and smoky flavor very juicy. And a All American Selection winner. The Mortgage Lifter is a nice old fashioned sweet tomato known for very large tomatoes some even up to 4lbs.
@jetaku173 жыл бұрын
Yeah I've had the mega bloom on my Cherokee nothing else. They taste the same as normal fruit. They are just twins

Are these type of tomatoes juicy, flavorful? Can't buy decent tomatoes out west....dry, bland, stiff flesh tomatoes. And Mexico's tomatoes, onions, & bell peppers suck!
@SamC_4 жыл бұрын
cherokee purples are the most flavorful sweet tomatoes I've ever tried. They do tend to crack more often if its over-watered but if you water regularly and don't have a ton of rain. They'll turn out great
