We bring you along for our first gardening experiment: growing tomatoes in a compost bag. We start with 2 plants in a pot and they grow to yield 11 pounds of tomatoes and we learn a lot along the way.

Also try 5' lengths of 4" PVC tubes staked into the ground with a scrap piece of rebar inside and filled with compost/soil mix. Install a wire tomato cage and prune the sucker leaves off continuously so that plant puts its energy into the tomatoes instead, the sucker leaves aren't needed and steal energy from the plant. The plants only need one cup of water per day, every day. In fall the soil will be completely consumed by the plant and the tomato roots will extend down into the soil below. The PVC tubes can be made shorter for folks in wheel-chairs and it iseasier for them to pick the tomatoes. Since we eat salads every day we usually only grow the cherry tomoatoes unless we are also canning tomatoes in the fall for chilli recipes in the winter.

Interesting idea! No breaking ground, tiling, weeding, constant watering. Although I would use a tomatoe cage. Either store bought or a simple DIY cage with stakes. 👍🏼

Yes, a cage would definitely work well - our stakes held up just about, but they could be improved for sure. I used to use this technique in rented properties where I didn't want to start digging up the yard to plant a few things!

I bought a potted cherry tomato plant really late in the summer. I live in Minnesota, so brought the whole pot indoors before the snow. I'm still picking tomatoes off it today! Unbelievable. You are right, the ones you grow yourself taste much better than store bought. My pot has it's own cage, I'm going to reuse it. I'm doing my own compost, very small scale, and am trying garlic and carrots this year. I'm still getting basil, as well, indoors.

I'm so happy to see you had a great result with this experiment. I too grew a tomato plant in a bag of compost and gave it only a bit of blood and bone to start it off. So far, it's doing okay! Did you feed your's or just water it?

This was a few years ago now but it worked great. Just watered them regularly.

@@AdventurousWay I'm pleased there was enough nitrogen in the compost, as I have been proven otherwise.

Never grown tomatoes in the bag....I will give it a try. Thank you for sharing! We like to use the tomato cages purchased from Lowe's. The cages give you more points to tie the plant.

That's a good idea! We could even try to make our own cages out of our wood offcuts.

Interesting experiment. As much as I love good tomatoes, I definitely don’t have the patience to grow them! Thank goodness for farmers markets!

It was interesting to grow them in a compost bag as there were weeds to pull out, the only regular thing we had to do was to water them. On the property I'm sure we will automate watering eventually!

It gets easier and cheaper year after year because you know what you are doing. Plus it is fun to do. I end up with so many tomatoes, all my family and friends get them for free.

We look forward to growing enough to preserve some for the winter. We already sometimes make some things from scratch like pizza sauces so it will be cool to make those things from our own tomatoes.

@@AdventurousWay You'd be surprised how many tomatoes it takes to make a quart of pizza sauce. Tomatoes are mostly water and seeds.
