The best way to propagate these is to soak them in water for 1 month. (yes). Then put them in a bag of slightly moist vermiculite on a warm windowsill. I have thousands of these seeds every year from my own crop (picking new crop this week). This method gives a huge success rate. Once rooted you can plant them in rows in a seed tray to re pot individually when they are seedlings

I have a twelve foot Chusan Palm in my garden, last year I collected some seeds of the tree, in September/ October time. I put the seeds into water for 24 hours, and put the seeds into small pots, and placed them in a heated propagator, and as yet nothing has grown ?. What have I done wrong.......You’re seeding look just amazing, I have to say to you, very well done indeed.
@PhillWyattProjects5 жыл бұрын
The main thing to remember with Chusan Palm trees is that they prefer a temperate climate. Not tropical. So they do not need a heated prop. The best way is to actually let these germinate outside in late spring. Also, give them time they can take between 2 weeks to around 6 months to germinate depending of freshness.

if you scrape the seeds with a knife or file through the main shell it then speeds up the germ..... time no end . . nice vid by the way
@PhillWyattProjects3 жыл бұрын
Yea you are rite. I usually do that with seeds like chamaerops and phoenix date palm seeds. I have never bothered with trachies maybe because I had a lot of seeds and wasn't worried about success rate or speed.

That's amazing. I used to grow chillies bit moving into palms and banana plants but list in what soil to use. Is it that easy?
@PhillWyattProjects4 жыл бұрын
With this kind of palm it is fairly easy you don't need to be too technical about soil. Their natural habitat is heavy clay and rocky so they are not too fussy.

Nice video! I have a question i have many trachy seedlings in two pots but one off them i will try to cluster them together do you think that will work?
@PhillWyattProjects4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Yea you can do that to make a multi-trunk palm although I would not cluster more than 5 together
@smezley505 жыл бұрын
Hi Phill. Great video's. I sowed some trachy seeds in the spring and they have all grown with a single blade in the greenhouse, as you say they can be left outside would it be OK to put them out now in late October? I also collected all my date seeds and guess what they have all grown. What did you do with your's as you don't mention them again and can they be grown outside. I'm in mid Suffolk.
@PhillWyattProjects5 жыл бұрын
Hi Les, I would say it's ok to put them out although do give them some cover to avoid any snow or direct frost. As for my date seeds, they are still growing. They certainly need cover in winter be careful with yours.

Hi Phil I have about 30 seedlings starting to shoot in a washing tablet plastc box. I think its over crowded and not sure when i should re pot them. I have photos but I am unable to send them. Can I email them to you?
@PhillWyattProjects3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I would not repot them for at least 12 months from germination. They grow very slowly in their early stages. You can always email me. My email is in the video description.

@@PhillWyattProjects Thank you. I would like to send a photo as there are now over 50 of them all with leaves in a washing tab box. Thanks for your advice.

Hi thanks for your comment if you have a look in my videos there is one about how to grow these. The seeds will develop and by about December they should be ready. They are green at first but will turn dark purple. That's when they are ready to plant..

Nice vid. Seriously now. With ingenious methods of winterizing, we are growing Trachycarpus fortuneii here in Southern Ontario and Nova Scotia. On our west coast I have seen them to 12 meters. I ordered an 8' CT for delivery spring 2020. Mine will be hauled out of the ground in November and spend the winter in my insulated but not heated garage. They are such a novelty in cold climates like Canada.
@PhillWyattProjects5 жыл бұрын
@@paulburley7993 yea I like growing the my garden is full of palms. It's mild here apart from the odd freak cold winter. I guess it is more of a challenge to grow them where you are. I have heard of some mild areas in Canada like salt Spring islands they are naturalised there which is cool.
