I have just pulled one of these from beneath my hedge. To my knowledge it ha been horizontal since we purchased the house 5 years ago. It is around 8 feet long with several leaf fans. The plant has been laying sideways along the ground beneath the hedge. We decided to pull it out to see if we could erect it in the garden. When it was finally dragged out we found that it has obviously been cut down as at the base is basically a trunk about 9 inches in diameter, no roots, just a sawn through trunk. The plant appears healthy with about a dozen fan like leaves. I assume it's been getting its nutrients from the main trunk being in contact with the ground as it has no apparent roots? Should we just dig a hole and put it in, or should we shorten the trunk a little first?

I have never heard of anything like that. Go over to the palmtalk forum and post a pic and info for further advice so we can see what's going on.

Great video. I hit our's with a slow release grass fert. two to three times per year. I have been using 18-18-18-18 and it works awesome

Thanks for the information! I’m a big fan of your channel and just planted a sabal minor and a windmill palm. I live in Central Ohio, which is technically Zone 6b now but my house is in an urban environment and has a slightly warmer micro climate. Last winter almost every day in January was above freezing with temps in the upper 30’s and low 40’s. At night it would regularly dip into the mid 20’s. The coldest it got was 6 degrees with maybe a week with temperatures in the teens. Do you recommend winterizing these palms all winter in these conditions? Or do you just need to protect it when it gets below 25 or so? Thanks for all the informative videos! Your palms look great!
@tntropics
@tntropics 2 ай бұрын
the sabal minor needs a coverput on if temps go under 5F. The windmill palm when small will need protecting in temps under 21F or ice conditions. I would recommend boxing it in sometime in Dec-March until it gets a full size trunk and pushing 10+ fronds/year

Great video! I’m still so confused as to why some people say water the palms almost daily when 90+, while some other people say no more than twice a week even in hot summers. I’m worried I’ll overwater or underwater my palm.
@tntropics
@tntropics Жыл бұрын
Probably either way you wouldn't hurt anything. in summer it's very hard to overwater a in ground palm unless the palm is sitting in standing water in the top foot.

@@tntropics good to know, thank you! One more question, is it really better to keep leaves even if they are damaged and don’t look so healthy rather than prune them off so that those nutrients can go to new growth?
@tntropics
@tntropics Жыл бұрын
@@craigeslim7212 It is best to leave them and for sure not cut any that are above horizontal. Leaving them is a choice you can make between keeping the palm healthy and growing faster vs aesthetics.

@@tntropics do you water the palms during the winter? Assuming the temperature is staying above freezing, but the high temperature is not really getting much above 60, should I bother to water it?

@@craigeslim7212 I don't water here unless temps are at least above 70F and it's dry. We gat quite a bit of rain in winter.

Instead of mulch, I have decorative rocks around my trachys in the summer. Can I through fertilizer on the rocks and expect the water to carry it down to the soil? Or should I remove the rocks to fertilize? Thanks so much for your content
@tntropics
@tntropics 2 жыл бұрын
Rocks are ok as well. It will probably be ok to fertilize over the rocks but is ideal to work fertilizer down in the top inch of soil.

What feed do u recommend for Trachys? Ano alot of nursery's here in the UK tend to use osmocote slow release, also mines in a 58cm pot nearly 6ft from pot base to top frond, any tips on getting faster growth? Tia 👍

I bought 3 Trachycarpus 6 years ago and kept two in large pots and planted the smaller one out. the smaller one outgrew the potted ones by a huge margin. In pots I too recommend osmocote. I have a fertilizer video at kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJXWiKh_nJh_oas

How often do i need to water a recently planted from the pot 10feet trachycarpus at 90f ? It also has a brim and mulch.
@tntropics
@tntropics 12 күн бұрын
Assuming you didn't create a bathtub effect when planting, daily. Sine I don't know your location or soil type, before watering dig down a few inches and if dry at all, water till you get a idea of your conditions

For long term storage in a pot what do you recommend? Is a soiless medium that barely or really slowly decomposes the key? Maybe use real soil?
@tntropics
@tntropics 10 ай бұрын
Good question I don't use soilless mixtures. But they are probably ok. The simplest I use is the Miracle grow Palm Mix and supplement with pumice or larger perlite. I also use various homemade soil mixes primarily using Lowe's Soil Conditioner (Pine fines) as a base.

can you tell me, please, if a Tachycarpus Fortunei can survive in area 6B and when it can be planted outside. I bought it now and want to change it into a bigger pot. in the winter I will put it in the house because it is too small, but I don't know when I can plant it in the garden

In 6B you will need to protect most every winter. I have some palm protection videos on the channel. If you are outside the US your 6b zone may vary a bit from US plant zones. You can plant your palm at that size but it will need to be protected when temps start to dip under -6C until it gets a full size trunk and is growing well then you can protect under -11C
