I just germinated mine in some moist vermiculite , it took a week or so, I still have 4 that have not germinated and it has been 4 or 5 weeks, I just put them in the hot water heater closet on top of the hot water heater and checked them every week. I've put all the ones that germinated in plastic 16 ounce party cups with potting soil with extra perlite for extra drainage. I'm hoping the summer heat will make them grow faster , Thanks for sharing your knowledge of them, I learned what needed/wanted to know from it.

Thanks for a great video ? I’ve got so many young growing under the main palms! I wasn’t sure what to do with them? When should I plant them in the main garden? All mine look slightly bigger than the ones you said were around 18 months old.

Glad it was helpful! I would suggest planting them at the end of April after the last frost. That will give them a chance to establish in time for the following winter.

What Trachycarpus is more cold resistend Fortunei or Wagnerian??
@PhillWyattProjects
@PhillWyattProjects 2 жыл бұрын
I am not sure if one is more resistant than the other. Wag is slower growing and might suffer less wind damage. In my experience their hardiness is similar.

I have both male and female palms ( the clusters of black grape size) and the others have a large cream coloured kind of small buds similar to corns! I thought that maybe that’s why I have so many pups growing everywhere mainly under the female trees.
@PhillWyattProjects
@PhillWyattProjects 3 ай бұрын
Yea the clusters of purple seeds are from the female. The male trees have what looks like small seeds after they flower although that is just the dead parts of the flower and can be pruned and discarded.

Hi Phil I have put the seeds in plastic boxes in a warm room. Not sure if that is correct. I also don't really know how much water to give them so I have just sprayed the suface of the soil. Any suggestions? Thank you

You can put them in between some damp tissue paper, put the lid on but not air tight may e drill a few holes in the lid. Just make sure the tissue stays damp. Keep them in a dark place. They might take from 2 weeks to a couple of months to germinate depending on freshness.

@@PhillWyattProjects Thank you for that. At the moment they are in soil in my house. Should I take them out and wrap them in damp tissue instead? i put them in the soil 2 months ago.

Do you protect that palm tree during the winter? I wanna plant some of that size in my garden as well but I heard that they die if you don’t protect them. Do they actually die or only get a little bit of damage? I live in Germany so the weather should be a little bit better then weather in the UK.
@PhillWyattProjects
@PhillWyattProjects 5 жыл бұрын
These even naturalise in the UK so you should have no problem growing them where you are. I would say if you plant out a palm do it in late spring to give it time to settle in before winter.

hey mate...where do you purchase ur cold hardy palms that can handle the UK winter?
@PhillWyattProjects
@PhillWyattProjects 3 жыл бұрын
I used to buy them from the supermarket but now I just grow them from seed because I find that if you grow them from seed they develop better roots and grow faster. They are also hardier when grown from seed at home.

Hi Phil. I bought a half price 40 cm Trachy from Homebase last year and I have a few year old waggy seedlings, can these now go outside from my unheated greenhouse. Also I need to repot the trachy what soil should I use or would it be best just to plant it in the ground, I just git to decide where it will go?. Thank You.
@PhillWyattProjects
@PhillWyattProjects 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely fine to put them out now. I think they are always better in the ground and now is a good time as they will have all summer to establish. If you pot them up I would make a mix of potting compost,top soil and sand. In the wind these palm live in a naturally heavy soil anyway so you can't go wrong as long as they get decent drainage.

I keep they under cover in their first year. In their first few years I make sure they don't get covered by snow. Apart from that they are ok unless you have a freak winter then I'm just extra careful.

Hi Phil, great video, thanks for sharing all the tips, I just won a competition of 20 bare roots! :) There’s one leaf on each root and they’re around 5 inches, just wanted to ask when potting these can I add banana skins and coffee grounds to the compost mix straight away and the roots are very long so do they need to be in deep pots?
@PhillWyattProjects
@PhillWyattProjects 4 жыл бұрын
Hi I would put them in deeper pots at this stage for better root development with good drainage. I wouldn't add things like coffee grounds or banana just a good soil as they are too young.

Hi Phil, thanks for sharing, great video! I got some seeds and want to grow them preferably in my backyard. I live in the Netherlands so the climate is quite similar to the UK, which time of the year do you recommend for planting the seeds?
@PhillWyattProjects

With these seeds, I would plant them now. That way by supper they should sprout up. Even if they do not....just be patient because sometimes they take a while. You will be surprised as you might think they have failed but if you have patients they usually pop up.

Hi just got a Trachycarpus Fortunei which after watching video guess is 4/5 years old. Could it be put in a container which is about a foot deep or really does it need a lot more soil depth? would less soil depth slow down growth or kill it? guessing parents didnt realise can grow a metre a year and up to 20 metres.
@PhillWyattProjects
@PhillWyattProjects 3 жыл бұрын
You could put it in a container of that size but maybe for 1 season. They do like to develop their roots so I would say a bigger pot would be better. In my experience they only start to grow fast once the diameter of the trunk has formed fully. Then they grow maybe 1-2 feet of trunk per year.
