Great video and awesome information. I have the South Florida as well. The Tree is about five years old in a pot. Finally got some fruit and it is amazing. This tree and the Triumph variety needs to be propagated and offered in the fruit tree market. This can be an amazing agricultural industry for us here in Florida.

Growing SE Florida, I got a Nishimura Wase "Coffee Cake" Persimmon shipped from JFE in Crawfordville, FL. They list it as growing in zones 7A - 10B so I took a chance that maybe it doesn't need too many chill hours. One Green World also has it available for pre-order and they also list it as zone 7-10. I got 3 fruits from the 2nd season, 2 fruits from the 3rd season, and nothing this year. It's grown very slowly, but I'm hoping it keeps going. It might be worth a try for someone that can't find the tropical persimmon. At least this tree is setting fruit and ripening it even though it's young. I believe they graft their varieties on Native American Persimmon 'Diospyros virginiana" root stock.

I think they take information off one another. Two initial thoughts, coffee cake and chocolate are often grown together to pollinate each other. Also it may fruit in zone 10b in San Diego which is at a much higher latitude than South Florida. More darkness in the winter.

@@mwnemo I had actually successfully grafted Chocolate onto it, but the grafts died at the start of this season, not sure why.

Lol. I got tired of Julian saying he didn't have root stock and bought a native tree from top tropicals. Now to get it to Julian...

I live in Brisbane and only grow Non astringent persimmons, only for the reason that we have cookatoos - large birds, they come and destroy our fruit trees if they know you have anything growing. With the non astringent at least I can take them off and let them ripen inside. I got a bit carried away and planted 5 varieties over 8 trees. As persimmons are deciduous and go dormant over winter are good for growing in areas where you want shade in the hot summer and in winter letting the area letting in full sun.

How many chill hours does the south Florida persimmon tree needs to fruit? I'm in Suriname with no chill hours at all.
@Pepesplants17 күн бұрын
Maybe I can help here. I cant give you a specific amount of chill hours. I can say that we had very little chill this year and last year. The trees are producing all over the State from North to South. I have one tree in a 15 gal pot that started fruiting this year. These trees are very difficult to source.

Perhaps, you can put chunks of ice on the roots to mimic chill!

@@SueLall1008 got to get hold of a tree first. That will be the greatest challenge since I'm not living in the USA 😉
