I used to draw a lot in elementary, like A LOT. therefore my grades going downhill and mom finally had enough about it. I still remember myself crying as I watched her tore every drawing i had and threw it into the trash. After that I stopped drawing in class. 4:17 this legend got even creepier in Vietnam where the elders said that every rice you had left in your bowl would be reincarnated into the respectively amount of maggots for you when you needed food in hell. So when I was a kid, I actually believed them because I was afraid of wormy things. And I got overweight for the whole childhood LOL.

I think the oldest and the longest bully memory I have is when the bully yelled out to me “ you 💣 ed Pearl Harbor you yellow J*p b***h“ from Gr.2 to Gr. 10. He used that phase for 8 years to show his so called “friends” he’s a tuff guy, so I ignored him then he actually got expelled from high school. For some other reason I don’t even know. One spring month he was suddenly gone from school.

One of the hardest parts of growing up Asian (Indian, more specifically) is I never knew how to use forks and eating knives. We were at a hotel, so I started eating a waffle like I usually do. By picking it up with my hands. And then my dad told me I ate like a barbarian because apparently you're supposed to use a knife, cut the waffle into eatable pieces, and then pick it up with your fork to eat it?

Great and highly relatable video! As a South Asian born and raised in the US of A, these struggles and added “quirks” are something to talk about. I feel happier seeing the people have experienced the same thing as I have - it makes me feel less alone..! As for stereotypes and jokes, I used to take them seriously, but now I just laugh them off and correct them casually. Learning your tongue can make you feel out of place. I always gravitated towards using English, but knowing many languages, especially your tongue, is helpful for both communication with your family, and keeping you connected with your roots. I often wanted to be more “Americanized” and “White”, but all it did was make me feel uncomfortable and self conscious excessively, to the point of me taking stress. But now, I act like my true self, and it has restored peace and happiness to my life. For all of you with similar experiences and backgrounds, stay strong out there, and don’t feel shameful for who you are!

All jokes aside, I love this video since I live in the American south and most of my limited Asian friends are adopted like me so it is nice to hear what the “growing up asian” experience is like for people who’s parents are Asian even if it’s not always great. I know it probably sounds weird to say but it’s almost comforting(?) in a way. I don’t know how to explain it 😅

I remember my Chinese tutor (I went to Xavier) yelled at me in Kinder for messing up one line of a song we had to recite. I began to cry and he yelled at me even more and I cried more, he sent me to the corner after yelling for the rest of the song. To this day, I hate even hearing the Chinese language (not being racist, this is just how the experience affected me).

i can kinda relate to that as a chinese-singaporean. my chinese is super bad and my grandmother continuously used to scold me in chinese stuff like that. that left an emotional scar on me because whenever someone yells at me in chinese its so easy for me to cry.

Man Domics this video! Growing up half asian was something I used to be ashamed of. When kids would comment on my food, the snacks I would bring, and all those stupid jokes, I started to really hate myself. (this was in my primary school days) But I remember coming home from school and watching your videos and being like “Hell yeah!” You really gave me confidence to continue embracing my culture and shut down the negativity people spread out of ignorance. Recently people have been throwing those comments again, and it’s been tough. But now with the confidence and embracing of my asian roots (and how badass a lotta the people in my life are) have helped me! So thank you man! From a fan from 2011

I think northern Europe has the no shoes thing too. I have Swedish friends who have this rule and every household I've been too in Germany has this rule. I'm in the UK and I have this rule (my family do) but in the UK it's really hit and miss. I can't cope with shoes being in bedrooms tho. Shoes in/on the bed is a nightmare!! Wtf!! Unless you're a student and your bedroom is pretty much your only private space, then I understand having shoes in the bedroom because ALL your stuff is in your bedroom lol

As an asian, I shall confirm the 'art' thing. My younger sibling loves doing art (like digital and traditional. they're rly good). In response to this, after a career, talk my parent had them choose to become an architect. I don't find anything wrong with my parents' idea on this, because they do want my sibling to live a comfortable life in the future while still being able to hone their artist skills and stuff, but this is where my dilemma comes in. I'm a theatre kid. I like performing (like singing, dancing, etc). I also like creating cosplays and props. But, it's not something like engineers, doctors, and tech stuff. It's the literal performing arts or maybe even movie industry. Asian-wise, pursuing any acting or theatre career is like wanting to become penniless. How the hell do I survive with this?

Once when i was at a summer camp I had a kid tell me he was just gonna call me Sacagawea because “[I had] black hair and [wore] it in a braid”. • I’m chinese 😑 I’ve also gotten the “chinese, japanese, look at these”, gotten asked if i eat dogs, been asked if I have oriental blood (I didn’t know what that was at the time), and been told by a white guy about how it was dumb to learn Chinese (I’m adopted) when Portuguese is so much more use full in more places. • I really hate people sometimes 😑
