So fun fact: I'm half-Filipino and one day my grandmother decided to cut my hair for me so we wouldn't have to go to an expensive barber. When she was finished (she did a fantastic job imo) my mom--who, and this is important, is ALSO Filipino--complained that I "looked like the Asian kid who's grandma cut his hair with a bowl." To which I said, "Well that's good, mom, because that's basically what happened" XD

I used to draw a lot in elementary, like A LOT. therefore my grades going downhill and mom finally had enough about it. I still remember myself crying as I watched her tore every drawing i had and threw it into the trash. After that I stopped drawing in class. Years later, she said "i miss the time when you would fill every paper you see with your artworks"

4:17 this legend got even creepier in Vietnam where the elders said that every rice you had left in your bowl would be reincarnated into the respectively amount of maggots for you when you needed food in hell. I guess I'm that rare Asian boy that my whole family wanted to become an artist since they deem me to be good at drawing since early childhood, so they bought tutors and lessons for me to learn drawing. @@noodles3328 That's probably in the past, or at least where I live It's about the same in terms of work environment/pay. I have friends who work for animation studios doing illustrations. I feel like they actually make more than software. At least from what I see software has much lower paying jobs in general when you are crap shooting to land a job. People who can draw are in good demand. But again, I might be biased because I have a higher chance to see more crappy jobs in software since that's what I do.

Great and highly relatable video! As a South Asian born and raised in the US of A, these struggles and added “quirks” are something to talk about. I feel happier seeing the people have experienced the same thing as I have - it makes me feel less alone..! As for stereotypes and jokes, I used to take them seriously, but now I just laugh them off and correct them casually. Learning your tongue can make you feel out of place. I always gravitated towards using English, but knowing many languages, especially your tongue, is helpful for both communication with your family, and keeping you connected with your roots. I often wanted to be more “Americanized” and “White”, but all it did was make me feel uncomfortable and self conscious excessively, to the point of me taking stress. But now, I act like my true self, and it has restored peace and happiness to my life. For all of you with similar experiences and backgrounds, stay strong out there, and don’t feel shameful for who you are!

All jokes aside, I love this video since I live in the American south and most of my limited Asian friends are adopted like me so it is nice to hear what the “growing up asian” experience is like for people who’s parents are Asian even if it’s not always great. I know it probably sounds weird to say but it’s almost comforting(?) in a way. I don’t know how to explain it 😅

Man Domics this video! Growing up half asian was something I used to be ashamed of. When kids would comment on my food, the snacks I would bring, and all those stupid jokes, I started to really hate myself. (this was in my primary school days) But I remember coming home from school and watching your videos and being like “Hell yeah!” You really gave me confidence to continue embracing my culture and shut down the negativity people spread out of ignorance. Recently people have been throwing those comments again, and it’s been tough. But now with the confidence and embracing of my asian roots (and how badass a lotta the people in my life are) have helped me! So thank you man! From a fan from 2011

I remember my Chinese tutor (I went to Xavier) yelled at me in Kinder for messing up one line of a song we had to recite. I began to cry and he yelled at me even more and I cried more, he sent me to the corner after yelling for the rest of the song. To this day, I hate even hearing the Chinese language (not being racist, this is just how the experience affected me).
@hardenedclay8840

i can kinda relate to that as a chinese-singaporean. my chinese is super bad and my grandmother continuously used to scold me in chinese stuff like that. that left an emotional scar on me because whenever someone yells at me in chinese its so easy for me to cry.

I think northern Europe has the no shoes thing too. I have Swedish friends who have this rule and every household I've been too in Germany has this rule. I'm in the UK and I have this rule (my family do) but in the UK it's really hit and miss. I can't cope with shoes being in bedrooms tho. Shoes in/on the bed is a nightmare!! Wtf!! Unless you're a student and your bedroom is pretty much your only private space, then I understand having shoes in the bedroom because ALL your stuff is in your bedroom lol
