What’s sucks with selective mutism is that it’s not like you can just “start talking”, in almost all cases nobody just decides to stop talking because it’s convenient. For a lot of people trying to talk will cause panic attacks (like it does for me when I go nonverbal) and I hate that people see those who don’t audibly communicate as being “difficult” and are “fixable”

well selective mutism is fixable it just takes time and professional help. Real mutism is caused when the part of your brain that controls speaking (the broca area) is severely damaged - that cannot be easily fixed. Selective mutism is caused by social experiences, like a troubling home environment, and is fixable, but yeah its not gonna be a dramatic over night change and random people saying stuff probably won't help

Sure it's fixable long term, but people seriously expect instant results just from pressuring you, as if somehow adding more anxiety to the situation will make it better. No empathy or understanding about the pressure and anxiety you're going through, just "Oh come on! Just talk, it's not that hard!" meanwhile I'm sitting here like "fck fck fck, what do I say?? M-maybe this...? ...... AAAHHH I can't get it to come out!!! 😭" Seriously, it's PAINFUL. Not a selective mute, but I'm a "quiet kid" as my parents sometimes call me. I definitely sympathize with you. I hate it when my entire family, especially my distant relatives like my jerk cousins and aunts, try to pry and pry at me until I "open up" and "tell them what's wrong" when there's nothing wrong, I just enjoy peace and quiet and that's offensive to them. All they really do is make me feel uncomfortable and unsafe. It must be terrible for you to deal with that on the daily.

My childhood best friend was kinda selectively mute. She was too shy to talk to my family, didn't like strangers, and was afraid of the rest of the kids because they were dickheads and tormented her. So she would whisper in my ear what she wanted and I'd relay that. I learned her hums and body movement. The tiniest of pitch changes in a quiet hum, or her doing a specific head movement meant something different. I was literally her translator, lol.

We had a trio with another girl who just started hating her, forced me to have two separate friendships with two people I adored when they both started hating each other, and then just forgot that I existed. Moon and I are happily planning another meet up. She loves over an hour away and works nights, so coordinating is a bit rough.

I used to be a mute too all the way till 3rd grade. No one except my parents and brother knew how i sound. They probably heard me sneeze if they're lucky enough. My classmates thought i had an issue where I physicially was not able to speak. I never used the school bathroom(never asked to go) and my teacher was so used to me being a mute that she would ask me if i would like to go to the bathroom 2 times a day. And yeah i had nicknames like tongueless/mute but other than that I was not bullied... I transferred to a new school later and made a friend for the first time in that new school just by writing to eachother on a notebook. I started talking to her in half a year and made a few more friends later on which lasted for a good 10 years. I no longer have friends, back to being a loner who doesn't speak. But i can still respond/talk a bit with people if i need to. Though i still have social anxiety and panic (even during phone calls) When I watched "komi-san can't communicate", I related to her so much that my life flashed before my eyes ngl. Loved the anime

Eventually I stopped talking to my 2 other best friends and we all went silent on eachother. While my bestest/first friend just told me one day that she was grateful for spending her childhood with me but she realized we can't be friends anymore and so, we also did not talk since then. It's been about 4 years since we stopped hanging out and 2 since I stopped considering them a friend.

I know this came out a while ago but I had to make a comment. Teachers forcing kids to speak in class is incredibly ableist. The person could have any number of reasons for not speaking (social anxiety, ASD, etc) and forcing a child to speak is an abelist practice that continues to this day. It's so frustrating to see teachers treat children and youth this way.

The selective means that the mutism is tied to certain circumstances. Ie) like being fine and talkative with family and close friends but not being able to talk to strangers. I knew a girl with selective mutism who was actual really friendly and social - it's just that she couldn't talk in those group settings she enjoyed just being a part of.

Felt the same way with social anxiety and some other thing that may have been slight paranoia. I dont know why but growing up I was in this mindset of if I didn't get the smallest things like a paper do on time , or lost homework that I would just fail and have no future. I had breakdowns were I cried and people thought I was just very sensitive, I mean probably but they made fun of me because it wasn't " average behavior " .Some teachers told me I was to old to cry , and even I couldn't explain why I did, recently I thought about this during quarantine and realize its probably from pressure in general were I would here things like grades matter so much for your future and other random stuff , I mean it does but my mind pushes that to astronomically high levels of stress. Apparently schools cant realize pressuring students so much isn't healthy for mental stability, and when teachers tell you to suck it up that doesn't help In any way and probably hurts that mindset more. I'm just glad I had good friends who could make me laught because it brought me down from my problems that weren't problems and impossibly high standards and made me realize I'm fine , I'm a A student and I should try to focus on these friendships instead of small things that won't really matter in 20 years. I think I'm way luckier than most being able to realize this , and maybe now I can try to calm myself down better in these random situations that my mind pushes into bigger problems even though it isn't that bad and it will get better.

It is pretty amazing how hostile humans can behave toward someone who merely chooses not to speak. I know from personal experience of being Selectively Mute (autism). My advice to anyone who has this issue (or who wants to be mute for mindfulness, etc) is this: DON'T let other people walk all over you just because you don't speak. It's sadly harder to do this as a child, especially if your parents don't support you. Most humans (especially those with weak egos) find it annoying and even threatening when someone refuses to speak to them. The sad truth is, most humans are complete dumpster-fires when it comes to fairness: they will not treat you well if you don't show them that you can and will defend yourself. Personally, I'd suggest ridding yourself of these types of people, but, for the times when you must deal with them, remember the following: 1. Don't let people walk all over you. There is a huge population of bullies in this world. It sounds like most of the teachers in this video were just bullies who "got older". 2. Most bullies are cowards with poor emotional control. A good tactic is to be more prepared than they are. Inform them that harassing a person with a disability is a crime, and start documenting how they treat you. 3. Find alternative ways to communicate (when necessary). Examples include...: a. Learn Sign Language. Yes, this is challenging, but completely possible. You can at least learn enough to make strangers not harass you. They will assume you are deaf, and treat you better. b. Use pen-and-paper (carry a notepad), text (phone), or some other written form of communication. 4. If you truly do not speak, then I suggest telling people: "I cannot speak," rather than "I don't want to speak." Just remember: almost no one on the Earth is "truly Mute"; most of the people who do not speak are actually Deaf, and while most of them technically 'can' speak, they don't want to (nor should they be pressured to). No fair-minded person would suggest a Deaf individual should be pressured to speak if they don't want to - so why should you be made to feel pressured? Your voice is part of your body, and you decide what to do with your body. Any human being who thinks you "owe them" or "owe society" is, by definition, a childish, closet Authoritarian - too-afraid to let other people live their own lives. 5. Research and Study the ADA: Americans with Disabilities Act. Businesses and Public Entities have a legal requirement to reasonably accommodate you if you have a Speech Issue/Disability. Do not blindly assume you do not have a disability: I spent over 30 years not realizing I am autistic because no one put 2+2 together. If you're not in America, hopefully your country has an equivalent. Find it, and memorize the key points. 6. If you want to do some further extra reading, look up the notions of "Positive" vs "Negative" "Liberty". These ideas deal with the concept of fairness in society. They may help you put feelings into words. For example: your Right to control your own voice is a "Negative Liberty" - which means it is a liberty that ought to be free from interference by other people. --- In regards to this KZbin video: it seems plausible that the Middle School teacher staged puking in the trash can in order to pressure you to talk. 1. She wouldn't let you leave. 2. She coughed in a trash can and told you to "Get the teacher down the hall." 3. From your description of the teacher down the hall, it seems like she was taking her sweet time trying to get you to speak, rather than rushing to help her friend. 4. Afterward, the puking teacher harassed you about "How far you would go with 'not speaking'". Seems to me like she was referring to the fact that you wouldn't crack - even during her possibly-fake "death" scene. Regardless of whether or not she was faking it, she was still completely out-of-line to harass you the way she did. If she did that to my child (autistic), I'd make sure the only job she could get at a school would be janitorial. I'm sorry your parents were not only unsupportive, but literally part of the problem.

I mean, I think she handled this very gracefully. Not namedropping them and just giving them fun nicknames. That's how it should be done. I've heard awful stories of teachers since before my time but my experience with teachers is just this: love them or hate them, they're all just trying to do their jobs with varying degrees of success and enthusiasm. Some of them are outright bad at their jobs but they're still trying to do it right and at the end of the day they're dying to go home just as much as you are. Some of them aren't gonna bother with you more than absolutely necessary and some of them are gonna be busybodies but I think it usually comes from a good and earnest place where they want the best for you.

There was this girl in my second grade class that, looking back, probably had selective mutism. She never talked to anyone except for her best friend, however, she used that to her advantage. Those two were always seated together and our teacher never showed any concern towards the girl's lack of communication which makes me think that she had a disorder that the school knew about. However, she still had her way of participating in class, she would just whisper to her best friend when she knew an answer to a question or had an inquiry to make. Her best friend was a very out-going and bold girl which worked really well for the both of them, since she had to vocalize two people. Looking back, the situation was very sweet.

I have a student who never talks (her parents say she talks at home) and the other teachers are always trying to bully or trick her into talking and I just think that's so shit. Instead, I devised ways for her to participate in games and class without having to talk and guess what? She does just fine in all my classes. I liked High School actually. Context: Brazilian HS seems to be wildly different from USA's For a instance: _they are nocturnal_ (So, if you want to play hookie, there's more fun in it! also NO TRUANT OFFICERS) While I was the smart kid, I was enough of a social butterfly to not get bullied (Or in the seldom case that I was, riposting trice as hard) People were fun, teachers were cool and I could acess the Library whenever I wanted (Again, being a smart social butterfly made me likeable to teachers and principals alike and they loved me) Even in the first year of HS I skipped many classes to go and flirt, run wild or go to a cybercafé when I had cash, that they raked up as an equivalent of 2 months of classes (Yet, I still was in the top percentile of students )

Also I would like to make it clear that she was not complexly mute, If you said a word and asked her to repeat it she would, she just did not know English. I remember in elementary there was a selective mute girl, she had an older sister and I think two younger siblings or something and I remember at the end of the day, I’d see them walk after school and talk but you still couldn’t hear her. I remember a few girls in my class and I asked her to whisper one word into our ears because we really wanted to hear her voice, and she agreed. She whispered into my ear “Hello” and I was really happy that she was comfortable enough to let us have a chance to hear her voice. I remember seeing her around middle school but I’m not sure if she started talking then. I think I remember seeing her once in freshman year of high school but I don’t really know if it was her. It frustrates me that your teachers treated you that way. Your band teacher especially, that was messed up. I used to teach third grade, and one year I had a kid who was selective mute. I had been encouraged to try to communicate with her in other ways but also to try to get her to talk, and I really didn't know any better. Years later I learned from a friend, who was still selective mute as an adult, that it's not always controllable and trying to force someone to speak can exacerbate the problem. Fast forward another few years when I was a swim teacher, I had a kid I swam regularly who didn't speak to me once, and I just adapted to it rather than trying to force him to talk, and it really wasn't difficult. It would be nice if educators were taught more about these sorts of things in our thousands of hours of required meetings and professional development.

Dear Chukeul Gadrt I know. Threw my bully into (and nearly through) a closed window. Though I was regarded as the "nice kid". So in my case the teachers actually looked into why the "nice kid" throws 'some dude' into glass window. Got detention. Bully got disiplinary penalty. AAAND crap from my parents. Was the right thing to do though. You are GOING to get a stiff breeze in your face if you stand up to being bullied. From the bullies. AND the system. I can attest to that sadly. BUT: You HAVE to stand up to being bullied. Otherwise it ruins you emotionally. You HAVE to show in your behaviour that you are the good guy to all the other people that are NOT your bullies. It is *your* propaganda to proove, that you are in fact the being the victim. Because the bullies usually play the 'victim'-card when you go to the teachers/authority and report them.

Chukeul Gadrt i yeeted a bar stool at my bully once and he got suspended in school for a week, 9 to 5 alone in a sideroom, i got to stay home for a week. ay lmao
