I gave a hitch hiker a ride coming from a rainbow gathering. In the 1980s. He rode with me over an hour. Traded him a knife for a tie dyied t shirt. I never forgot him. When he left, I felt like I lost a best friend.

I went to a gathering and stayed for 2 weeks after sorting trash and cleaning up. It's mostly about drugs, partying, and the hippie aesthetic rather than real rejection of consumer culture. I grew up in the rainbow I was born 1977 and we traveled for about 20 years going to almost all gatherings in that time. you are correct it is a false safe hood. All about drugs and partying. They never show camps like A camp that drink and get violent shoot guns off all night and fight and stab one another. They destroy every forest they enter. In 1994 I was walking in and was attacked and had my throat cut and was beat within a inch of my life. They are all fake. It's like fish safety in numbers the more people they have lthe less chance you have of getting caught some will get caught but the majority will not that is all it is. Out side of a gathering the wouldn't help you or tell you they love you like they would pretend to do at a gathering. It's a joke

If you've seen one facet of the gathering, you've seen one facet. The real treasure of any gathering is that it's a reflection of how you see the world at that particular time in your life. Your own lens. If you don't do drugs, you stop seeing the drugs. If you're a musician, the music is everywhere. If your heart is wide open, nothing short of miracles happen. If you're in a darker place, the Gathering may be a darker experience for you. The Gathering meets you where you're at in any given stage in life. I've been to over 20 years of gatherings, and it's different each time, depending on how I'm different that year. I've been there young and single, then with children, then with a rocky marriage, then single again with now older kids. I used to party, then went sober. Used to stay up all night drumming or volunteering everywhere. Then peaceful and quietly serving. I've taught and learned in many workshops, or just stayed mellow in my camp area. Each Gathering is a unique movie. My daughters and I have treasured being raised in gatherings and beg to go back every year. Feels like Home. 🌈

Ive been to three gatherings and have enjoyed everyone. Growing up in the mid-50's my dad had a pharmacy on main street in Reno Nevada and it was at the very beginning of the Hippie culture so thousands of them traveled higway 80 heading for San Francisco's Haight Ashbury district. That's when i got involved with the 'free love' movement. When they would come into the drug store, my dad would always help them out. He didn't like the long hair thing but he also didn't like what Elvis did with his hips on stage, even at that my daddy was always kind and generous.

@@72drowssap Big crowds at baseball games, concerts or parades always leave lots of trash behind. Why should a hippie gathering be any different? Because hippies are supposed to be cooler than everyone else? One difference is that baseball games and concerts hire cleanup crews to take away the mess. This hippie event wasn't organized well enough to do that. Some kids did try to clean up afterwards, but it wasn't enough. I also used to live near Henry Kaiser Auditorium in Oakland CA where the Dead came to play every year. The Deadheads were like an invading army, camping out early before the show, taking up all available parking spots, blaring loud music and pissing in alleys even though port-a-potties had been provided. I'm all for kids coming to my city to enjoy good music, but I'd like to see a bit more responsibility. But kids will be kids, I guess.

Back in the late 80's I went to the first East Coast Rainbow Gathering in the Green Mountains in Vermont. In the morning I spent 4 hours hauling wood and water for one of the kitchens. Then it was breakfast time and I stood in the line with everyone else. The little girl in front of me got her scoop of food. Then I was given the same size scoop of food. I explained that the fire they were cooking on was my firewood, ands that the water they were cooking with was my water, and that I was going to need more food than a 60 pound girl. I was assured everyone got the same thing, because it's only fair. So I left, and went to town and the Chinese restaurant filled my belly for $5.00. Dunno who hauled their water and wood for lunch, but it wasn't me, or the 60 pound girl. Hippies are stupid.
@mariehillerman5579 Жыл бұрын
Not stupid just drugged out. I find Bathing really helps people's thinking and outlook and many of them just don't bathe or wash their clothes. On the way I picked up a couple with Dreadlocks They smelled so bad I had to stop and throw up twice. Why do people have dreadlocks cause bathing is too hard?
@robinhood480 Жыл бұрын
Why did the hippies cross the road? Because everyone else was too smart to crossed by them.
@MelissaThompson432 Жыл бұрын
Way to generalize. I know a lot of hippies. In my experience they are overwhelmingly brilliant, clean, and engaged. They also tend to be green vegans who are economic minimalists. They might not have a lot to eat, especially if they have taken a vow of service (which all of my neighbors have,) but what they have, they share. I have partaken of their hospitality many times. Sometimes I go out for food afterwards, because I'm not vegan and my body isn't satisfied with plant based foods, but I don't blame them for my needs. And, yes, some of them have dreads and smoke weed, but you can wash dreads, too. Some people are dirty, but not because they're hippies; rather, in spite of it. Or maybe they've been boondocking in a place where water hasn't been abundant. Maybe they were on their way to indoor plumbing and water heaters. But, yeah, take your superficial contact with two or three people and make sweeping judgments. That's always a good idea.
@CAKESLAPPA Жыл бұрын
Seems like your view of service is perverted. You volunteered to haul wood for 4 hours then took it out on other volunteers when you didn't get your way? Very interesting that you're the one calling others stupid.
@ZachAdelic612 Жыл бұрын
I don't think you understand the concept. Helping your community is chopping wood and carrying water with no expectations that you will receive more. You didn't have to do those things and you still would have gotten fed. There's definitely a lot more people that did a lot more work and received the same thing. You do the work so that those who are unable to work will get fed too. We're you told "oh you'll get more because you helped"? Probably not. So you helped in the first place for selfish reasons i.e. thinking you will get more than everyone else. Why not help just to help? It's a communal kitchen!?

@lifeisbetterwhenyourelax3 ай бұрын
Who says the 60s did not usher in world peace? You have to consider timelines. The 350,000+ citizens of the U.S., for instance, could not all have come into agreement within a span of 1-2 decades. Such grand changes take time. I've been plugged into various such countercultures for the past 3 decades, I know what's going on behind the scenes, and let me definitively say that the 60s era was a critical spark that lit a fire that has been growing and expanding ever since. We don't see it everywhere yet because the very well-funded, opposing forces of capitalism and consumerism continue to push back against world peace. Nevertheless, the fires are still blazing, spreading, taking ever new forms. There are FAR more hippies in 2024 than there were in the 60s and 70s, they're just not so obvious because not all hippies wear traditionally hippie outfits. The world is continuing to evolve toward world peace, without a doubt.

Could you imagine if 500 Palestinian just showed up to this gathering unannounced? The one thing that is for sure, is if these two groups met in this valley, the amount of diversity, love and understanding that would ensue would be legendary. Not!!

The audacity to call it official rainbow 😂 balls, that takes some real narcissism 😮 Thanks for taking the time to make a wonderful rainbow family of living light documentary. I love your lovely perspective, but if anything was annoying was watching the commercials at the start and you commercializing rainbow for your own gain. You were not asked for money coming in, you had to watch no commercials, no one ask you to pay them for filming them and my niece, yet you took it all and commercialized a noncommercial event. Trippy. Maybe you know not our ways well and that’s understandable. I beg you to make it free, like it was free for you. Don’t waste time. Take off the dumb commercials, unless you are starving to death or are a serious junky. Just think about it. Maybe some things shouldn’t be about money? You seem super spiritual. I get it, it fun to make vids and tictoks! Love it. Fun to share what’s around. I’ve been rainbow documentaries and art and stickers and interview folks since 2007 and been in rainbow documentaries and been going since 1997. I’m making another doc this year, but never have I once tried to profit from something freely given in the spirit of unity. Made like 8 documentaries, never once do I make folks waste life watching asinine commercials, but so many like you do. Many just come and take for advertiser dollars and likes…. But if you think it’s wise and cool to profit form others that have freely; that’s your karma. Or if you’re doing it to collect money and give back to the community that freely gave to you, that’s be righteous, otherwise seems Hella shallow and nefarious. 🧜🏽♂️

Hey what's this place look like when they live. I hope everyone's been vetted through the bsa only campers I trust. Even soldiering I was taught the no trace left behind but it seemed like people think it's a joke even when your life depends on it... shiiiiiiiiiit wonder why the bsa taught me that as a child.... was it war or environmental

If they got rid of the incessant, random beating of percussion instruments and stopped using bizarre made up names, it'd be a lot better.

Really the drums are the heartbeat of the earth and vermin love supreme (real name) has been a presidential candidate that’s known internationally. It cannot be any better than this is if you go and experience it, you will know that there is nothing better than this anywhere on this earth

CPS should be called on anyone that brings children to these events..

There’s so much nudity and drugs there. It’s really not appropriate for kids.

Nudity does not equal sexual intentions. It's our natural form of being? Also at Rainbow Gatherings you have kid camps where they keep the kids away from the partying and discourage or don't allow naked people in the kid camps. You know there are like whole nudist communities right where families will bring their children and shit! My uncle and his family are nudist and although they are kinda strange doesn't mean their children haven't grown up healthy and procted from predatory things. And honestly raising a kid in NYC or pretty much any other major city they are way more exposed to serious drug use such as needles and rampant homelessness. At Rainbows you get cannabis and psychedelics which in my eyes are medicines and if you shelter kids from drugs forever when they eventually do run into them, which they definitely will, they will be informed and less likely to do harmful things or if they choose to use said drugs will hopefully be in a harm reduced way. The reason nudity and drugs are viewed as "bad" is because parents don't seem to want to explain these things to their children which again will totally backfire later on down the road. You tell a kid "don't do that" and what do they want to do instantly? That! But if you explain "hey don't use opiates because it dies this or that or if you wish to experiment with cannabis or psychedelics wait until you are 18 because brain development and make sure you are in a safe environment with people you trust or this or that might happen...here's a link on proper use about set/setting" or things like that seems like auch better way than just saying "Just say no!" Type of mentality.

Rainbow gathering's are anything but earth friendly.They totally trash what is often pristine wilderness.Cause severe stress to local wildlife population's.Ive seen this first hand in Colorado after visiting Rainbow sights after they have left
