It's just easy to think you're failing through late undergrad to post-doc phase 'cause you don't make nearly any money compared to friends who went into engineering/law/medicine/etc and your work is often done alone holed up in a cubicle with very little recognition, often on a less sexy topic (simulating water moving through dirt for me). It's an expectations buster of an experience, for sure (on the topic of parents' expectations). It's also one of the few opportunities a person can have to get paid to satisfy their child-like curiosity while adding in some tiny way to humanity's cumulative understanding of the universe. Sorta on theme with Scarra and Lily where life goes through a crappy period and still ends up at a pleasant place when you push through it.

And since it's a cultural expectation to be better and more successful than others, the pressure doesn't only comes from parents, but also asian teachers(depending on school), relatives, siblings and etc. But i agree that u should try to communicate with them if it's possible.

Holy shit I can relate so hard to both of them, the “I just want you to be happy” came in once they realized that I absolutely hated school. Breezes through middle school without getting below a 96 average and then high school came and I had like an 88. They kept on me about that until I got depressed, and it got worse. They saw that and I guess realized they weren’t really paying attention to me. I’m still in high school now, but my grades have gone up and I’m pretty happy now.

I really like this video! Im someone who lives with strict asian parents and went into the medical field because they manipulated me to. And after doing that and working in a toxic field with people degrading me along with a job I hated and sucked at, I started having depression and became a NEET like those people in Japan. It was until at that moment my parents finally realized that they just want me to be happy. I appreciate that they wanted the best for me, I really hated everything that was around me at that moment .Although Im finally happy that they understand, the cost of it all was that I lost most of my skill and confidence in drawing and wish I had the support I did now to pursue my dream path. This video of them talking about their parents really hits close to home and I enjoy rewatching it 😄 (Sorry if this post was too long and annoying. i was a little afraid to go into a creative field bc asian parents, but when it came time for college decisions, they told me that they just wanted me to be happy and i just 🥺🥺 so hard bc i rly didnt expect it. i still think they were a little nervous bc my dad found one of my old paintings and he basically was like "holy shit i didnt think u could do this"

its nice hearing stuff like this, and how it makes me feel like I'm not alone. I've been bottling up some stuff for a while, and it just feels right to vent it here. (even if this is a non-serious video.) my parents all of my childhood were (of course) also super stereotypical, and had huge expectations from me. like they would always tell me stories of kids who did super well in school and got into college at like 12. they wouldn't ever straight up tell me to perform that well, but they did HEAVILY imply it. something like, "I'm not telling you to do that, BUT if you do, that would be nice, wouldn't it?" and of course, being Asian, I did well in elementary school, but the depression hit me like a freight train in middle school. I just stopped doing my homework, and I failed every class I was in. I'm still confused about how I was allowed to progress through the classes, even with a D in every class, but that's not the point. I just was in a pit and couldn't dig myself out. my parents, however, didn't care. I tried explaining the situation, but all they cared about was results. this carried on through high school, and I never really got "out of it". I hated high school and wanted out of it asap. I ended up taking an exam where as long as I passed the exam itself, my grades don't matter anymore, and I'm legally the equivalent of a high school graduate (its called the CHSPE, look it up. its a great opportunity if prom and football games aren't really your thing). it's only been getting worse lately, as my parents care less and less about me. it's not even them not putting as much pressure, but they just don't care what happens in my life. its almost as if I don't and have never existed to them, and I'm just someone in their house. This has been going on for a while now, and I really just need to vent somewhere. I'm not posting this in hopes of gaining attention, but I just needed to vent somewhere, and this video really helped me feel not alone for once. thank you to anyone who read this, and I hope you have a great day/night

My first love was Asian and *HIS* parents would lecture *ME* about *HIM.* They basically would blame me for everything when it wasn’t my fault. “He’s late to class because of you.” I’m the one who tells him to hurry and go or he’ll be late. “His grades are slipping.” Because he’s either lazy, dumb, needs help, or all of the above. I say he’s dumb cause he told me once he wanted to start smoking because of an *anime character.* I rarely got to see him outside of school and after we broke up, his parents were kind of snooty towards me if we ran into each other. The only person in his family I think genuinely liked me was his grandma. My biggest regret was not seeing her in the hospital when she [supposedly] asked for me. I wanted to go but we had already broken up at this time and I felt like I wouldn’t belong there nor have the right due to the other family members. Saw him more recently and he doesn’t look much different from high school except more greasy and a ponytail. Still dresses the same too.

Grandma in Asian Families are the NICEST PERSON YOU COULD VER KNOW THEY ARE SO NICE THAT ITS GETS SEMI ANNOYING like if you ever get red packets (Chinese new year stuff where u would get money) THEY LEGIT give you a red packet and also GIVE U 500 dollars (HKD) as Lunch money and stuff like that but only if u live over sea Dads are the most cold and loving person sometimes (Mine is just THE MOST SCUMMY PERSON IN HISTORY) Mothers are the same as dads but a bit more cold but some are very caring But that’s just the actual Asian parents I would say The stereotypes are more of Hong Kong and Main land China parents
