they make a valve for 1/2 inch pipe maybe that would work better -smaller flap less weight higher pressure?

robbie m the pipe is under balanced pressure until the hot water is used. The flap just stops the water from going in reverse. A metal flap is heavy and technically a smaller flap has less surface area for the water to push against. The point is when a metal flap is open for a period of time it tends to seize open. Plastic does not do that and this setup has worked flawlessly all these years since this video.

The point of this system is so that you don't have to wait. Point of use type systems where you push a button to cycle the water still is inconvenient to wait for it to finish. This system is so that you just turn the water on without any other function needed or waiting. Plastic insulated pipe and slow convection driven circulation of water has undetectable increases in gas/electric bills. It's a Virtually free of increase costs and has no moving or electrical parts to worry about going bad. Plus pex or pvc pipe is relatively cheap and this can be done very I expensively.

I don't work for the company. However, I've installed several of the Hot Water Lobster Recirculation Valves over the years, and have had great success with "open loop" plumbing systems (both with and without dedicated return lines). When the situation calls for such a valve...I do recommend it.
