Rooting Chinese Elm Cuttings! || Propagation made easy

Excellent video. I. Started 3000 babies from 1 rosemary plant I called the mother plant. I did this for 3 yrs. In a row (w/my little brother) planted them in our upper field once they rooted in open green house(we lived next door to each other and fenced all property as 1. (35 acres) using 4 acres for rosemary. He and I put in drip irrigation to each plant . ( my hubby worked for irrigation co. that makes the big pivot irrigation systems in farmers fields.) Once rosemary was as high as our knees we pulled them up and sent them to be turned into oil (a it process in its self) which I had no interest in doing but we could have done that part to and made more money. But I loved making the babies. A man we came to know had made a good all natural bug spray for gnats and Mosquitoes but he needed a good source of rosemary oil. It was an adventure ❤ I loved it until processing planted started changing us too much. So we decided to plant pecan trees and sell those about 3 foot tall to replace trees on farms or bundles for someone starting a tree farm.. As we started getting older decided to just grow pecan trees and turn it into a pecan farm and collect the nuts every Christmas. We made a boat load of money and it worked out perfect when my hubby retired we sold our pecan farm. Helped my brother separate the property and fence it. Cause he's still there and runs a buying point where he buys smaller farms/individuals nuts too and takes them directly to Planters Nuts. The yr before we moved from GA. There were farmers starting olive farms. I spoke with one of them and showed him how to clone his trees too. Instead of purchasing all of them. We stopped and saw him before we moved and I saw his new trees. He gave me the biggest hug and thank me so much for helping him ❤ I love planting I got it from my mother who did it til the day she died at 101. Man I miss that lady. She could pick up a trampled piece of plant in a nursery off the floor and go home and make a beautiful plant out of it everytime. Lol sorry about the book I don't get out much😂 hopefully some of what I told ya might help others too❤ my 1st bonsai is doing great (Royal Poinciana). Love your videos and appreciate your help. This is a very good tree for livestock fodder too. Tree hay which was traditional way to feed the animals in winter. Due to the fact that trees roots bring lot of minerals so it was also medicinal for the sheep and cattle.

Hardwood and softwood cuttings both successful, hats of to you Jelle. I had a success rate of 95% with my rough-bark elms! The ones that did not make it, were because I was experimenting with spots under the bonsai benches. Some of them get direct sunlight and this will torch young growth. Sorry for the burning deaths my cutting friends, maybe your sacrifice contributed that all your brethren are still alive. Great gifts for my local bonsai club, would not know what else to do with over 50 cuttings. A video idea: top two beginner propagation techniques kind of video were you pick easy to germinate seed(s) and vigorous tree(s) that roots well for cuttings.

It is always like jinxed. Whenever I do something on my plants, a short time later you post a video and I think to myself. Damn the "waste" I could have just pulled out of my elm or yes that would of course also be a great option. Your videos are a real enrichment. So sorry about that. I often try to be ahead of the regular season for this type of work, but often cannot make it if I want to show the end result too! (Or I should work one year ahead of publishing on it!)

No, no, that's not what I meant 😅I've only been active in bonsai for a short time and will probably still often have the feeling to have done something "wrong" or forgotten something. Therefore, I found your last video about mistakes super great!

Well documented Jelle and I am definitely behind you on getting people to use elm cuttings. I have just made my firstc ascade bonsai using a 6-year-old chinese elm cutting. It makes the hobby so much more fulfilling knowing it is all your own to begin with. Of all the cuttings i find Chinese Elm to be the easiest and will strike in practically any susbtrate. I just poke 6" semi-hardwood shoots into soil and leave thhem at the bottom of the garden :)

I am afraid that after the last shot.. The cuttings were moved onto the compost as I did not really need anymore and I cannot for the love of me get rid of elm cuttings in my area. Did not think there would be a wider interest!

Jelle, Great as always. The same technique is generally correct for all deciduous species? In American English vermiculite is pronounced ver-MICK-you-light. Not sure how our friends across the pond pronounce it.

Hi Garik, i rarely jave anything that I cannot control in any other way. I do not mind some eaten leaves. If i do need something stronger, I get regular over the counter stuff from a garden centre. In the end, bonsai are just plants in pots!

Elms are very easy to propagate by cuttings.

How were the cuttings stored the first 4 months? I just the other day found three 6-8 inch elms wild and wand to try to propagate. Two of them were growing out of cracks between sidewalk and my building, I could not remove without cutting so I feel forced to attempt with those two. The third was also growing fron a small water runoff inside a neighborhood I go fishing at lol. It was a rainy and was able to pull it with root and has been replanted. Hoping for the best, wish me luck!!!

I have tried this with soil and got mold starting to grow on the soil. have you ever had that with vermiculite?

Vermiculite will not go mouldy as it’s inorganic and doesn’t have any nutrients other than nutrients you add to it from soils or fertilisers etc … try to remove any mould As soon as it appears and give the cutting fresh air daily by opening your micro climate (bag or green house etc) for 10 or so minutes … I don’t think cuttings need any nutrients until the roots have begun to push out

Yo Jelle, what substrate do you use below the 1/3 vermiculite? I feel like it gets a bit expensive to use akadama and lava and pumice, personally I use DE or coco+perlite for most cuttings and seedlings

Just regular substrate that I grow my bonsai in. The cuttings root in the vermiculite and as they grow out, the roots have regular substrate which I find makes the transition later on easier.

Not sure if you will answer, but what do you do with the cuttings in winter? keep them under cover outside or bring them indoors?

Jelle, do you have a video that explains how to find or identify a live vein on a juniper? I was supposed to expose it on one of my junipers before our next concept class, which is this weekend, mid November, but i am sort of nervous about it. Obviously, haven't done it.

@@maryweber4176 I do not. Keep in mind that only old junipers have sections of dead bark. So in reality that is what you do, you remove bark which is dead, rather than "expose a life vein". Else you are talking about creating a share, e.g., removing living bark to create dead sections.

it feels like they can root anytime of the year as long as kept frostfree. I prefer to take growing season cuttings, and before mid summer

You mentioned something about planting the cuttings upside down but I didn’t see that in the video. I’m confused because it’s the first time I’ve heard of propagating that way. Could you clarify please? BTW…Great Video!

I think I say, keep track of top and bottom, so you don't plant them upside down!

Hey Jelle! I don't think that Elms even need rooting hormone, without it I usually get a 90~95% rate of success, summer or winter, you name it, I find hard NOT to root them! lol Cheers dude.

That's right, for Chinese Elms and Zelkova you don't need the hormones. Perfect trees for beginners, always growing... always small leaves and always something to do. 😊

I have also sticken cuttings of elm trees, but I had to take 50 cuttings in order to get just 5 new plants, sooo I just would like to know where to get that rooting hormone you show in this video. Greetings from Kenneth in Norway.

Great article thank you :) ref' so-called miniature Chinese elms, I'm not interested in bonsai, I just want privacy in my small garden. I had three miniature Chinese elms, two of which were cut down because at 45 or 50 feet they had grown too tall and I was left looking at tree trunks not greenery, the third died: so a couple of years later I cut it down, a year or so after that it changed its mind and produced six or eight new major branches at ankle height, de-facto a new coppice which is very successful in giving me privacy at the height I need. Of the two that were cut down, one at least produced four or five new offspring 10 to 20 feet away from the original trunk; each with five or six principal branches which I coppist back to a height of perhaps 4 feet a couple of years after they sprouted giving me lots of low-level greenery and privacy., so all in all; a robust plant, which while sold as miniature Chinese elms are only miniature if you get to them early rather than late; with saws and secateurs ;) ., John Perth Au'
