I love hornbeam and elm for bonsai. They grow all season long so they develop good canopies quickly. I let them grow 5 or 6 leaves on a shoot and then trim back to 2 leaves.

Side note, what website can I buy seeds from that won't scam me and sells seeds for mostly cheap prices?

Some thoughts re. substrate: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n2LdoJlmqrmsjZI Go to a seed wholesaler and get your seeds there. Anybody who claims to sell bonsai seed, avoid. Do note, some wholesellers have a section on their website called bonsai, but that is just because those species are often used for bonsai, or are seeds collected from small leaved specimen trees and thus are good to start with.
