Warsaw Travel Guide - Discover The Beautiful Capital of Poland | 90+ Countries With 3 Kids

The capital of Poland, Warsaw, is a rapidly-developing city in Central Europe that attracts more and more visitors every day. A good place to start is most definitely the Royal Way which might be confusing as it’s not on the map. It’s a thoroughfare along which many of the city’s sights can be found and it actually comprises two streets Krakowskie Przedmiescie and Nowy Swiat.
The Old Town Square was once the heart of the city but due to the Second World War, the city’s Old Town is only that in name. The capital’s historic centre, dating back from the 13th century, was completely demolished during the conflict, and what visitors see today is essentially a 20th century restoration. That in itself is remarkable. There is information around the cobbled streets and squares detailing how the now-Unesco protected streets were meticulously reconstructed.
For the museum aficionados there are quite a few options. One is the award-winning Museum of the History of Polish Jews that opened in 2014 and that features a multimedia narrative exhibition exploring the life of the Jewish community that flourished in Poland for a thousand years up to the Holocaust. The Telegraph describes it as “full of noise and colour; with echoes of centuries of Yiddish chatter and the soulful sounds of klezmer music,”. The building housing the museum is in itself worth a visit - a post-modern, cube-like structure sat in a city park. Amazing.

I just found you and your lovely family today. My parents were the first American business family to live in Warsaw after the Second World War. That was in the seventies. I was in boarding school in Geneva but visited for holidays etc. you gave a really nice overview of the oldest parts of the city but I do remember the exuberantly rebuilt Rocco areas of town. They were my favorite. I returned there with my mother in the 80s ( a grand tour of the places she and my mother loved and lived in) as Poland rejected communism. My parents and two younger brothers lived at the Europeski hotel for 4 months waiting to find a rental house. They all loved their time their including carrying bricks for a whole day to help rebuild the palace. I’m sure you know this but your children will remember the adventures you are providing for them the rest of their lives. I can’t wait to see more! BTW, loved the tour of Grasse. I rented a house just south of Cannes for a month a few years ago. I had just picked up my new car in Stuttgart and almost wrecked it on those tiny streets!

You were wondering, what happened with all of these paintings, most of them were hidden by citizens of Warsaw in the very beginning of the war, when Germans didn't take the capital yet. It's a pity that the showists / you visited only 10% of interesting places in Warsaw, and only a few seconds of video material from the center of Warsaw where the most interesting things are happening :) Over the last 4 years since your visit, Warsaw has changed even more :) There are more skyscrapers, transport the public has improved, great restaurants have appeared (currently over 4,000 restaurants) and many other attractions .. Come back!

Not really true - the buildings you were looking at in the main square were not totally destroyed - just the rooftops in some cases. What was destroyed was the royal castle - literally leveled and a ton of buildings in the Muranów, Centrum, and Wola districts. And no, not 90% of the city was destroyed. For starters Praga was left untouched, as the Soviet army was alrady there - this is like 40% of Warsaw. Around 50% of the left bank Warsaw was leveled though, but many churches were left intact. My mother's family were from Warsaw. They moved to London in the 1880s. We thought of going back to find where they lived but it was all destroyed in WWll. We watched an episode of "who do you think you are?" with British celebrity Esther Rantzen whose family also left Warsaw. She basically saw modern office blocks where her family's home used to be.

Why we rebuild Old Town, Royal Castle, and many other districts of Warsaw (also Gdansk and many other cities) instead build something new and more useful at this place? It's a very big question. The answer is because we love our country and our heritage. It was not for tourists like Disneyland. It was for us ourselves. But if you liked it and had a good time walking around and seeing all that pretty new houses (70-60 years old) I am happy with you. All the best 4U!

After the WWII our country was exhausted and to top it off russians completed entire degradation by stealing our factories and killing inteligentna. Before WWII Warsaw was called Paris of the East. That may give you an idea how beautiful it was.

If you still thete you should definitely go and see Muzeum Powstania Warszawskiego, Muzeum Narodowe, Łazienki Króewskie, Pałac w Wilanowie, Centrum Nauki Kopernika. You can also take a walk along : Aleje Ujazdowskie (from Pałac Belwederski) + Plac Trzech Krzyzy+ Nowy Swiat + Krakowskie Przedmiescie its just over 2 miles walk but theres is a lot of nice old buildings along this route. If you're ever in Warsaw again, I recommend going to the Warsaw Uprising museum. There's two reasons why: 1. It's highly interactive, designed to give you experiences as well as knowledge. For egzample, they have recreated a part of the sewage system on the promises so you can experiance the way people tried to escape the bombing / navigate the city. 2. Warsaw Uprising might not be very important for the history of WWII in general but it is extremely important to understand Polish mentality during and after the war, plus why our external politics are the way they are.

My wife an I were being escorted through Wilanow in 1979 by a very lovely older woman who spoke very correct English. She pointed out a desk where she said all of the important papers were kept. To which I replied "the toilet paper?" This got a big laugh from the guide and group, since toilet paper seemed to be in short supply in the Eastern bloc countries then.

Although his name is spelled Chopin the correct pronunciation is more like Shopen. Just put it in you translator and listen carefully. If you see a cross on top.of building like that in Poland that means it is a church. As for the Royal Castle. During bombing by germans people run in , rescued lots of art and hid in their homes. When the desicion was made to restore the castle citizens brought back art back. Also government had look hard around for the trades that were almost gone to do the proper restoration.

That is not a happy lion. It is pacing. That's the first indication that they are growing neurotic in captivity. Sad. I agree without about zoos, especially when there are alternatives. Otherwise, Warsaw looks great! And the ice cream makes me hungry!

It must have been hard to have seen these animals free in Africa, as you did, and then in a concrete enclosure. If they must be in captivity, the larger sanctuaries are a better alternative. Any time you talk about history I get a feeling you have no idea what you're talking about. I've seen a lot of other vlogs from Warsaw filmed by Ozzies, Kiwis, Canadians, Brits, Americans, Koreans, Japanese and other people from all over the world and I am sorry, but they did a way better research than you did.
