The MK108 was a technological marvel for its time. It fired massive HE projectiles from an extremely light and compact cannon. The only drawback was the slow velocity of about 1,700 FPS. The ME 262 had 4 of these cannons. The top 2 had 100 rounds each and the bottom 2 had 80 rounds each.
@sergiogregorat18303 жыл бұрын
The MK 108 was a weapon designed specifically for use against slower, less armored targets (read: heavy bombers). It was also mounted on dogfighters such as Bf 109, FW 190 and derivatives exclusively for reasons of lightness and compactness. For fast, well-armored targets, the MK 103 was preferred, but it was heavy, bulky and expensive to manufacture. One was a Volkswagen, the other was a Porsche. Be content with what you have on hand

Also, the battle with the Mk108's absolutely horrible velocity is very relatable, although I admit I only used it in WT. These rounds really pack a punch when they hit but you have to almost double your correction for gravitational effects and increase lead by 1.5x. The problem with the Mk108 vs Mk103 is the shorter barrel if I recall correctly, and there is an additional issue with the Minengeschoss; It is basically a stick of high explosive coated in a very tiny sheet of metal as opposed to APHE or even regular HE which have a shrapnel producing casing. The Minengeschoss is translated to HEHC in English Nomenclature, "High Explosive, High Capacity". Because explosive filler is very light it loses momentum rapidly and the bullet drop is procedurally worse on distance travelled. Its a trade off for the eventual insta-gibs once you get rounds on target you just showed us a reel off!:D

Germany "could" have had the ME-262 much earlier in the war. But the bearded and the fat guy weren't interested in Jet engines back then and the budget went into other things.

@@JazzJaRa I'm not familiar with this but considering the massive raw materials, manpower, and manufacturing issues they faced during the war I wouldn't be surprised if that's why they didn't build these earlier. Plus, these jets were a logistical nightmare to maintain and fly and they would have probably been better off building more 109s.

I recall reading the Allied airmen discovered a weakness of the Me-262:it had to accelerate gradually because its engine couldn't take sudden high heat. Germany didn't have access to a heat resistant alloy(I believe it it was chrome-cobalt)which was mined in Turkey so they had to substitute steel. The Allied airman hung around German airfields waiting to pounce on a Me-262 coming in for a landing knowing the pilot couldn't speed away because doing so would destroy his engines.

Are you sure about that? Afaik the reason pilots of the Me262 had to gradually accelerate is because if they slam the throttle they simply induce a compressor stall and then it all over. This was WW2 after all so they had no super fancy engine control.

Anyone noticed the ME262 wings' leading edges moving? Never knew they had such elaborate mechanics on that plane - chapeau, thx Il-2!

Leading Edge Slats? They are pretty niffy, and all just moving on their own with only the plane's movement and the air being the mechanism that makes them move. The Bf/Me-109 has them too

Very cool. Don’t suppose they have the British meteor jet fighter. As far as I know they never actually fought despite both being in WW2. Be interesting

Sadly no Meteors in IL2 yet, possibly in the future though as it would be a nice matchup. Also no 262 vs Meteor engagements happened unfortunately for us, both sides were hesitant to throw them deep into combat to prevent losses and it was already super late when they actually arrived in Europe anyways.

Same for P-80. They've been there and operating (2 in Italy and 2 in GB IIRC), but never met the 262.

F22 of it's day. Where the F22 has maneuverability/stealth, the Me262 had speed/surprise (stealth).

Hearing you go on and on about VR.... (I've never experienced VR anything as of yet Still at the TrackIR stage) Been flt simming since 1982 with B1 Bomber for the Apple II -- In our wildest dreams we never thought it would be all like this. Sega Master System's "F-16 vs MiG-25" ( circa 1987 ) is where I cut my teeth learning the ACM / BFM trade. (that, and Falcon 3) You'd laugh at that now. But back then, it was the gold standard, groundbreaking. Someday soon I hope to don a pair of goggles -- and "see" this virtual reality mode and, hopefully get a snap from it as you seem to...
