I happen to be a pilot myself. My observation is that during WWII the German aces transitioning to the 262 were used to the Bf109 or the Fw190 which had limited vertical abilities. Those pilots, actually some were Ju88 guys didn't understand the importance of the vertical to preserve energy. That cost them dearly. I think it'd be interesting to see a match-up between the 262 the Meteor and the P80. Those were all of the same time period. I'm betting that the 262 was the best machine.

Oof. The absurd hit and run potential of a well handled 262 is crazy. You can be flying merrily along and suddenly you're missing a wing, a tail, an engine. Maybe you see the thing sweep by with turbines screaming like a daylight banshee. Maybe you'll just hear it as you float down on your chute.

@ObiWanShinobi9175 ай бұрын
And yet, many Me 262s were shot down by P51s. Once pilots of the slower aircraft figured out the weakness of the Me was to make it overshoot and force it to keep coming back around, opening it up for hits from other friendly aircraft
@ericjanssen62656 ай бұрын
One thing to consider while calling the 262 an amazing plane was that the engines were the weak point. The axial flow turbojets, while today very common, were very unreliable at the time due to unsuitable alloys. They would destroy themselves with quick throttle changes and only lasted for about 24 hours of flight time.
@MrAwombat6 ай бұрын
It still had a kill ratio of like 5 to 1. Even if it had its logistical disadvantages, it was probably better than building more of the aircraft that were not competitive with allied fighters.
@Ambaryerno6 ай бұрын
@@MrAwombat There's evidence that kill ratio is likely EXTREMELY overclaimed. Sources that actually corroborate the claims against actual reported Allied losses bring it much closer to 1:1.

Engine management was key in the Me 262. Avoid fast throttle changes at all costs, even when under attack. Treat the throttle as if you were flying a jet airliner - not a jet fighter. Never use 100% throttle.
@bazejs80844 күн бұрын
This is precisely how the F-104 Starfighter was designed to fight for air superiority over Europe against the MiGs. It wasn't designesd as interceptor. Speed, altitude, acceleration advantage to make high speed passes - plus capable radar, Vulcan gun, early Sidewinders - all perfect for this surprising BnZ attacks. Great video, thanks!
@bakzetary31456 ай бұрын
Being a crappy sim pilot, the 262 was the only plane in IL2 that made me feel like I was "king of the skies"! Using "boom and zoom" tactics, made you hard to shot down. Mix it up with both flight sims would be my call. Thanks for the great entertainment!

BTW GS, if you like flying this you might want to try the Heinkel Lerche III B-2. It was only a design study in 1944-45, but if you have IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 it's modeled in there. It's a contra-rotating prop, twin-engined VTOL fighter / ground attack aircraft that uses an annular wing and will outperform the Me-262. It's armed with two 30MM cannons and four air to air missiles, and you fly it lying prone in a glass cockpit. The first time I flew it I was hooked. I'll bet that would be a blast to experience in VR. 😁
