Most of the recordings floating around were picked up on civilian receivers, hence the gaps and audible digital control tones.

Surely it was a tough battle between the 5th gen ultrasonic stealth mighty f-22 raptor and the Chinese balloon, firstly the balloon was in the lead and almost passed the American territory without being even touched by the American army but in the end the f22 finally got a lead a locked on the Balloon, it was a really tensed moment for the American government and the army. They were veiwing the live shots of the battle. This shoot down was broadcasted all around the country. The f22 used one of the most dangerous missile in its arsenal. The balloon tried its best to catchup with mighty f22 but couldn't do so due to f22's stealth ability. Victory for USA and the f22 raptor. Maybe a national holiday is to be declared for this event. 😄

The air is really cold at that altitude, and solar panels should be hotter. Not as hot as a jet engine, but It's a matter of thermal difference, I suppose.

I'm excited for the minidoc about this. I hope he covers surveillance balloons in general such as the apparant previous balloons from China and also the stratolite balloons like the one floating around the US last July that i got to see. @@Koka2609 They first had to positively ID a target and that takes significant amount of time when talking about a UFO at 60k feet altitude moving slower than a bird. Also as DoD stated, observing Chinese spy baloons gives valuable info to the US.

This is a great simulation, but I've heard that the sidewinder had a deactivated warhead so that it was more like an arrow. The reason for this was to minimize the damage to the chinese spy gear and make our technical analysts job easier.

Why not just go guns at that point? A handful of 20MM has to be cheaper than a 9X and it would probably come down gentler from a punctured balloon than getting speared with a AAM. Although not much.
