When I was younger, I remember he would fly for only a few hours, land, drive home, and then crash on the couch all sweaty and without even taking his flight suit off. Now I can understand why XD. VR takes some tweaking for every system configuration to get optimal performance. Running defaults is like dipping your toes in the water to test the temperature. As a real pilot, I started DCS and said "Oh, this is cool". The experience was totally different in VR. When I started DCS for the first time in VR and it dropped me in the cockpit of the MiG-21 BIS, I said "Whoa! Holy Frack!" I spent 15 minutes just looking around. Looking at the controls, studying the instruments and switches. Then when I started to taxi out for take off, I blurted out "Whoa!" again. While I knew I was sitting in my simpit and NOT moving. My eyes were feeding my brain very different information that I was moving and I could actually feel it. It was the strangest sensation I have ever experienced. It took about 30 minutes of flying (with NO aggressive control inputs) before I got over the vertigo inducing inputs to my brain. Now after hundreds of hours flying in VR, everything is instinct. VR technology is getting better and better. At some point, we won't be able to tell the difference between reality and VR. Next level is full motion simpit with VR....

While VR in DCS is demanding. There are ways to make the experience better. If you want to just try it out go grab a reverb G2 or quest2. With the implementation of dlss and FSR, while it does have its cons in VR, it definitely helps with experience if your PC isn’t top end. Also you can turn on motion reprojecetion or ASW in oculus. This helps lower the demand but not without its issues such as warping on rotors in rotary aircraft. But provides a smooth experience. If you are on the fence pick up a quest 2 they just dropped to 199? I think. If you don’t like it return it.

I love the immersion that you get with VR. Have a Quest2 device and it works very well, even though it does not offer the best resolution. What I find difficult in DCS VR is that it is hard to spot your targets before they spot you and that there is no gradual zoom like you have in 2D mode. So you can only have a toggle to zoom all the way in while holding a button of back to normal view. This makes interacting with the cockpit controls harder as they get a bit fiddly. Flying around and lining up with the runway feels much more intuitive than with track-ir. Also approaching on the carrier gives that sudden rush of a very small deck coming at you very fast. Overall I don't want to go back to 2D, but there is still room for improvement/growth to make it more immersive. Have decided to not go for the F4 yet as I first want to understand the A-10 a lot better which gives you a bit more time to spot your targets and go at it tactically. Thanks for all your video's, I love the variety!

Interesting to hear you say you find it harder to maintain visual - I found it the complete opposite moving to VR. Yes you have to move your head more but I can easily recall the position my head was in to look back and forth to relocate a target whereas I struggled with TrackIr as it would dart all over the place and was way more sensitive to slightest of movements (and external light!). Maybe I didn’t have trackir set up well but I also found with the slightly lower visual quality, targets were slightly bigger pixels in vr so again a little easier to spot (although I’m a Q3 user not Pimax Crystal). Just my take but interesting to hear you had the opposite.
