Great tips. I just received my seeds in the mail. I use school lunch trays for my bottoms from Facebook Marketplace for real cheap that I will have for life.

This year I used a toilet paper roll to make newspaper cups, the roots grew right through so when needed I just put the whole thing in a bigger pot. It can be a bit time consuming but I started much before the seed starting Season so they were ready and I only made them when I was sitting around.

I'm the same way about reusing stuff, it's gotten to the point of hoarding! I got the bug bad when I worked for a small landscape company. I had hundreds of plastic pots and trays at one time. I had branched out to collecting just about everything I saw that could be salvaged, bikes, tires, wire, microwaves, just about anything...I'm now trying to "recycle" everything I can, and reduce the amount of stuff around my property. I know far too well how worthless those trays are, I'm in central TX, the sun can be brutal on some of the cheaper plastics. I'm still frugal but not as good as we should be. We still generate way too much trash, just the wife and I.

Paper towel rolls work for starting parsnips. Did it last year.

I reuse a lot of containers like you, but you have given me some more good ideas. Thank you

Yes, I buy thrifted cookie sheets and metal pans, too! It seems like people are eating healthier and staying away from so much white flour & sugar which means more donations of bakeware to thrift shops! I also use plastic salad takeout containers as mini greenhouses, sometimes leaving them in my warm car in sunshine in the early spring. 😀

I love your re-use philosophy…one or the 3 r’s…reduce…recycle and…re-use.

I like the paper cup idea. I have used solo cups from seed to planting out in the garden. Being plastic, they can last multiple seasons and no transplanting needed due to size. I would love to use large paper cups, but I would worry that they d break down too fast. I start my peppers soon so I will give it a try.

I purchased some heavy duty foil chafing pans that are deep and cheap at a job lots or odd lots store. About a dollar and some have separate plastic domes which I avoided because they are flimsy. I had significant heat and wind outdoors last year that toppled or damaged a few plants when hardening off small pots.i found that cookie trays were not deep enough to protect some plants. The 4 inch deep pans hold enough water when drainage holes poked in pan sides about a half inch up so plants did not get soggy or need watering more than once a day. And can be covered with plastic without affecting seedlings when starting indoors. Great video. I reuse and repurposed items as much as possible too. Gardeners know how to be thrifty.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, the cookie trays aren't deep if used in the wind. I use them mostly in the greenhouse though.

WOW thanks for all those ideas, I will be looking for some of those baking pans, I have some small round pots and I did go out and buy muffin pans to use as a base so I could move the small round pots around and I do save mushroom containers and I use them for my onions also. I do keep all my Costco chicken plastic pans and they also have a clear dome so I can cover them. I did think about the Costco muffin containers and will now I will saving them and reuse for my plants. Love the little paper cup idea.

Those paper cups: I remember paper cups from my younger days, and they were lined with some kind of waxy film. I remember this because if I chewed on one of these cups: I'd get this weird film in my mouth. Maybe not so compostable 🤷. Thanks for the video!

Yes, these don't have a coating on them and they break down very fast
@gretroman82352 жыл бұрын
Yes. The cheap bathroom paper cups without plastic coating are the ones to use, not coated ones that have wax and sometimes a plastic liner that does not break down.

Can you cut your milk carton in half from top to bottom and be able to use both halves? It will have a pointy end on each half, like a boat. Great ideas. Thanks

The thrift stores on the east coast are pretty pricey! Pans like the ones you show are closer to $5 or $6 at the few we have in my area. I've got a couple bags full of toilet paper and paper towels ready to use along with containers I've saved from the grocery store or take out my kids have gotten.
