The sequel is a near-perfect mirror image of this movie. Both are extremely enjoyable. More importantly, except for on small portion of the plot, the sequel treads new ground and doesn't feel like a rehash of the original. I never considered this a holiday movie but as it covers both Thanksgiving and Christmas, it's a worthy addition to the group.

I was married to my wonderful wife for 30 years. This was always one of her favorite movies. She passed away in 2014 and I miss her so much every day. We used to watch this at least once a year. Neil Simon was one of the writers of "Your Show of Shows" on television, along with Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, Larry Gelbart (M*A*S*H television), Mel Tolkin & Danny Simon. Perhaps the greatest writing team of all time. His plays and movie adaptations are simply brilliant!

This film re-introduced me to how good of a team Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau were. It was after seeing this film, I watched what many consider to be their best work: The Odd Couple (1968). I do hope that you’ll react to their sequel Grumpier Old Men (1995), as well as other movies they made like Out To Sea (1997), and The Odd Couple II (1998).

I'm glad you enjoyed this. I was their bodyguard for a special event in their honor in L.A.. Their friendship and appreciation for each other was very apparent. They made several buddy movies together and are all worth watching.

Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau are the greatest movie double act of all time, together and individually, they are always on form and entertaining. The odd couple is a classic ! Jack Lemmon is brilliant in " The apartment", and Walter Matthau equally so in " Charlie Varrick " . Nothing and no one in today's movies can hold a candle to these two fine actors or the films they left us with.

One of the rare films I think you should watch the sequel. It feels like one long story about these 2 guys, but the sequel we see more things tied together. Plus, it adds Sophia Loren to the cast. Also, Burgess Meredith is pure gold and steals every scene he's in.

Jack Lemmon (John) is considered one of the best actors of all time. He won 2 oscars and received the life time achievement award. He's a big part of movie history. Walter Matthau (Max) was best known for his comedy but was a dramatic actor as well. He also won an oscar. A Matthau movie you should really check out is "Charade". It has an absolutely amazing cast, filled with big stars. The plot is mind blowing and has the audience completely guessing in many directions all through the entire movie. Ann Margaret was considered a huge sex symbol in her day. She had an extensive movie career as well. Thanks for bringing these two iconic stars that worked together a lot out to 'you tube' on your reaction channel.

Being a Swede it almost feels like the plot is taking place in Sweden - the character John Gustafson of Swedish decent, Swedish-born actress Ann-Margret (Olsson) and the winter landscape all combined. When I first watched this film some 30 years ago I could imagine the grumpy men's lives - now I am older than the characters and can identify with them even more. Time really flies.

Not sure if you know this, but Minnesota and the upper-Midwest were settled by a lot of Scandinavian immigrants to the United States in the late 1800s. Plenty of Scandinavian based heritage can still be seen throughout the region.

OK - add these to your list! :) Jack Lemon was in Some Like it Hot (1959) with Marilyn Monroe and Tony Curtis (Jamie Lee's dad)... Walter Matthau was in Charade (1963) with Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn (and, yes, Dennis the Menace)... Ann Margaret was in Bye-Bye Birdie (1963) with Dick Van Dyke - it's a Broadway musical so idk if those are hard to get around, with copyright. She was also in the 3rd Santa Clause, with Tim Allen. If you haven't seen that one, it's a great!

Been a fan of Jack Lemmon for a decently long time considering my late Gen X birth. First because of Grumpy Old Men and some of their other 90s movies while I was in HS and college, but also then from getting into Glengarry Glen Ross, especially from the Apartment... and recently, my wife and I finally watched Some Like it Hot (after Sunset Boulevard) after meaning to for years. Slow but steady drip of the classic movies I didn't catch in the 80s and 90s, IOW. I'm HOPING to see more Walter Matthau films (besides Odd Couple and Grumpy Old Men and so forth) at some point, thanks to you and a few other commenters for the Charade reference, that sounds like one to start with.

In 1964, Ann Margaret visited my dad's ship (USS Ranger) with the USO. In 1999 when my dad was working for Burt Reynolds, she was staying at BR's house. My dad got to meet her, and she signed his Cruise Book.

True story: The town I grew up in had a small college. We also had a lake that always had several ice houses (fishing shanty to you girls) on it every winter. The college had a visiting professor from a country that never sees snow and ice. The college gave the professor a tour of this fairly small town, which included a drive around the lake. At the conclusion of the tour the college representative asked the visiting professor if she had any questions. She said, just one. "Why do they make all the poor people live out on the lake?". It seemed hilarious at the time, but I guess if you've never seen snow and ice how would you ever know about the ice fishing aspect of winter in the north.

I think it's less about not living in a region of the world that gets cold to know about ice-fishing but rather about not being worldly, after all ice-fishing is an extremely ancient art that goes back to primordial times and even some arctic animals wait by natural holes in the ice to catch fish such as penguins, polar bears and seals (which could be how humans learned to do it by watching nature do it first). Documentaries and books could have informed the professor, but she probably didn't possess the interest during her life.

@@kristinaF54I mean, speaking as someone born and raised (primarily) in Texas but who visited 20+ countries and lived in Japan for 3 years before I turned 18 due to my dad's job... it is probably also about the "not living in a region of the world that gets cold enough for ice fishing" part of the equation. The visiting professor lady reportedly not knowing anything about the topic doesn't mean she was totally uncurious about the world outside of her comfort zone--there's only so much time and attention anyone has to try and learn everything about everywhere. In my case, I never saw an ice fishing shack with my own two eyes growing up--I ended up learning about them from TV shows and movies slowly over time. Grumpy Old Men MIGHT have been the first time I ever saw them, in fact. But then there was also Fargo (1996) later on and more recently seasons of the Fargo TV show (2014-present). And likely other pop cultural ice fishing moments in between the 1990s and the 2020s that I just can't recall at the moment.

Such big stars. John was Jack Lemon. Max was Walter Mathau. Ariel was Ann-Margaret. Jack and Walter were the co-stars of the original Odd Couple movie many years ago. Both have made many great movies. Ann-Margaret was in the film version of Bye Bye Birdie, and in Viva Las Vegas with Elvis. She was also in Newsies, and starred in a western with John Wayne too. The guy who played Max's son was in A Few Good Men as part of Tom and Demi's team. You two get more adorable all the time. For the Christmas season you guys (if you haven't ever seen it) should watch the 1951 version of A Christmas Carol. He is the very best Scrooge ever. I watch it at least once a year and often watch the end of it several more times to see his scene after his change of attitude. Hope you try it. Enjoy!!

So have you never seen either Jack Lemmon or Walter Matthau before? Wow. Jack Lemmon was basically the Tom Hanks of the 1960s, the charming everyman comic who could make you smile even when starring in a movie called "How to Murder Your Wife". (Not my first recc, but fun.) Like Hanks, he also did some more serious roles, from "Days of Wine and Roses" (1962), to his Oscar for "Save The Tiger" (1972) to the one he should have gotten for "Missing", ten years later. (Although the competition was good that year. You can make a nice case for Paul Newman in "The Verdict", too.. Who also lost.) (This barely scratches the surface of my Lemmon recommendations. I mean, "The Apartment" is sheer brilliance.) Walter Matthau had started playing villain roles, but he and Lemmon found wonderful comic chemistry in "The Fortune Cookie" (1966) and "The Odd Couple" (1968) and so they did a few more together, but didn't want to get pigeon-holed, but this was such a success that they filled up the rest of the 1990s pretty much joined at the hip. Matthau also did serious work ("The Laughing Policeman", which is *not* a comedy, and the original "The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3" in 1974, opposite Robert Shaw, whom you remember from "Jaws") but because he was not conventionally handsome, he also played in films such as "Hello, Dolly" (with Barbara Streisand) and "Cactus Flower" [1971], with Ingrid Bergman (almost 30 years after "Casablanca") and Goldie Hawn, about 15 years before "Overboard", (So glad you saw "Overboard". For a moment I was worried I would have to describe Goldie as "Kate Hudson's mother" and that made me die inside.) Ariel is played by Ann-Margaret, who was the Gorgeous Female of the early 1960s. You must see her opposite Elvis Presley in "Viva Las Vegas" (1962), which is pretty much the quintessential Elvis film. The IRS agent is played by Buck Henry, who has fine comedic timing for small roles like this, but is best known as a screenwriter, most famous for "The Graduate" (1968), which is a MUST-see. (I mean, "One word, Benjamin:" is pne of the iconic lines in filmdom. [I am deliberately omiting the context, as I want Cassie unspoiled.]) Buck also wrote the exquisite 1971 comedy "Cold Turkey", which is NOT a Thanksgiving film. Christopher MacDonald (Mike) was Shooter McGavin, but his classic role was in "Quiz Show" (1987) Kevin Pollak (Jake) not only works well here and in "The Usual Suspects", but he's a very funny stand-up comedian who does perhaps the best impression of William Shatner ever. Which is perhaps irrelevant to a movie channel, but I wanted to give Kevin his props. And if you've made it through all this, a BIG thumbs up to Carly. I can't stand cheese, either. And it's everywhere! Cheeseburgers, pizza, mac and cheese, grilled cheese (wtf?)…ew, ew, ew, ew, ew! They even try to ruin Philly Steaks by putting cheese on them! Now if you also hate coffee, you are my idol, lol. Happy Thanksgiving!

Well, I dunno if Cassie or Carly read it all, but I did. tl;dr isn't really in my vocabulary, unless I literally don't have time for something, in which case I'll make an effort to get back to it later. ;) Most importantly, you used plenty of paragraphs to help the flow of a long post (though I've recently discovered some smart TV youtube apps do not display paragraphs in comments, so it all gets lumped into one giant block of text!). Great summary of the cast's other work there (I especially love the Apartment (watched it at least 2 or 3 times, most recently to introduce my wife to it)... and you just reminded me I did once see (most of) Pelham 1-2-3 alone on cable one night in the 1990s or 2000s). Now that you have been introduced to these performers you should watch them in the prime of their careers. Ann-Margaret was Elvis's main squeeze for a while and starred with him in Viva Las Vegas. He saw her performance (especially her dancing) in Bye Bye Birdie and fell in love. Mathau and Lemon are in many movies together but I think the Odd Couple is their best. Lemon paired with Jamie Lee Curtis's Dad in a couple of great comedies, The Great Race and starred with Marilyn Monroe at the height of her career in Some Like it Hot. Watching any of those movies would be well worth your while.

I was 41 when this came out and I loved it. At 71, I love it even more. Old guys are just young guys with bodies that are falling apart. LOL Ann Margaret was 52 when she did this film. The sequel has Ann Margaret and Sophia Loren.

I'm looking forward to their reaction here. This is an all-star type movie for baby-boomers and maybe even gen-x. Ann-Margaret was a favourite of everyone in the 60s. Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau starred the "The Odd Couple (1968)", which became a TV show everyone watched for years. Burgess Meredith was terrific from WWII on for decades.

Eh, turns out she knew at least 3 or 4 people in it, she just didn't know they were in it before they started watching! ;D She's seen the Apartment before, but maybe didn't recognize Jack Lemmon in this since it was made 30+ years later... She's seen Kevin Pollak in both Usual Suspects AND A Few Good Men at the very least... and she's seen Daryl Hannah in Splash and maybe other things. And as she said to Carly during the reaction, they both know Walter Matthau from at least the Dennis the Menace movie and Burgess Meredith (don't remember what she said from as it was during the opening credits... but he was in Rocky, so at least from that). Make that at LEAST 5 people from it! ;)

Being from Minnesota, with a grandmother from Wabasha, this is has been a long time family favorite of ours, and captures the character of WWII-era Minnesotans with remarkable accuracy. I’m sure you’ll get to it, but Grumpier (the sequel) is another gem! I absolutely love your channel, Cassie. Been with you since Hacksaw Ridge. You really won me over with LOTR, and now this! It really does! My grandpa was from Faribault and Max's wardrobe could have been taken from his closet. There's such a nostalgia in this movie (and I now live a few blocks from the block of Hiawatha where the houses are), and I'm so happy they enjoyed this one.

A classic! I loved this movie, it came out when I was a teenager, and it really made me appreciate my parents and grandparents. Its so funny, but also so sweet! I love John's little dance in his undies. One of the best scenes ever put on film!

This movie was a pretty big deal here in Minnesota. I live about 45 minutes away from Wabasha, where this takes place and was filmed. Its actually the town where my grandpa spent his later years, where he would take us all out fishing on the Mighty Mississippi.

Jack Lemmon was OG. He played an alcoholic in Days of Wine and Roses, and then, unscripted, revealed during a very personal interview that he actually WAS an alcoholic. The host had no idea how to respond, it was something else.

Ann Margaret is a great actress. And a very patriotic actress. She was involved in the USO. She went to Vietnam on tours for the USO. She would take time for the veterans when she could.

Hi Guys! I’m glad you guys liked this one. But I am telling you, you need to watch “Mr. Roberts”. Henry Fonda and a young Jack Lemmon (“John Gustavasson in “Grumpy Old Men”). Comedy / drama. Great cast. Great movie. It is a military movie but there is no violence. It is about a crew on a supply ship during WW2 in the Pacific.
