This movie was a massive hit when it came out. That's one reason why it spawned a successful sequel. And since Hollywood loves to jump on a successful formula, the year after this came out was littered with movies starring lots of older, veteran actors. They weren't as brilliant as Grumpy Old Men, and the fad waned quickly. This was one of the last hurrahs for the leads; Lemmon, Mathau, and Ann-Margaret had been household names for decades. Even the supporting characters were well-known: Ozzie Davis, Burgess Meredith, Kevin Pollack, and even Buck Henry. Daryl Hannah was one of the biggest draws in Hollywood at the time, and she signed on to play a small, supporting role. For anyone watching movies when this came out, it was a huge movie; it's one of those rare movies that almost everyone loves. But younger generations are not going to be so quick to try a film about old men, especially when they no longer recognize the actors. And unlike a lot of other big movies of the time, this is probably not the kind of movie parents would share with their kids-- so the love doesn't get passed on. I'm glad you liked it. As soon as I saw the thumbnail, I knew you were going to love this one. (As for the sequel, it is a solid movie and worth watching, especially if you are invested in the characters. It is not as good as the original, in my opinion, but that's measuring it against a pretty high standard.)

"Why is this not more talked about?!" We who grew up on it did talk about it. And we happily recommend it as one of the greats. I think it has something to do w/ the "common knowledge" problem where many of us who are a bit older already know and don't think to tell other people b/c we assume they already know lol. It's one of the few movies where the sequel is just as good too. Lemmon and Matthau were stars from an earlier generation, but they had no problem crossing the divide with Grumpy and Grumpier (their other team-ups were good but these two were the best imho). And Burgess Meredith is always worth watching. Love the channel!

I agree with Thread Bomb that having knowledge of who Cary Grant is, is helpful in understanding the character that Tony Curtis' character is putting on. (Besides the fact that Cary Grant is amazing, and Ashleigh should definitely watch his stuff!) "Operation Petticoat" would be a good chance to see an older Grant and a young Curtis playing opposite each other; it gave Curtis a chance to practice his Grant impression. I also would be interested in seeing a millennial's opinion of "Some Like It Hot" I'm curious to see how the premise plays in 2021.

This is a great movie, and I like the sequel as well. People in my area of Wisconsin were excited for this movie when it was released, as it was filmed across the river in Minnesota and we knew of or had been to locations in the movie. I didn't see this movie in the theatre, unfortunately, but so many of my coworkers were talking about it I rented it as soon as it was released on home video. I definitely went to see the sequel, Grumpier Old Men, in the theatre. Local theatre was packed to the brim and it was filled with laughter. Definitely a good film to watch multiple times.

I cherish those times because now it's hard to share his company, he has been gulping down the Kool-aid from CNN (his sole source of news) and lives and breathes politics even though he has a Green Card and cannot vote, and refuses to even see me and my siblings or other family until we get vaccinated, which isn't happening. Makes me sad😔. At least I can kind of relive the best moments with him by watching our favorite movies.

Comedy gold was created in that movie, and this here a chance to get back that old cantankerous chemistry but in a new way. Old houses creek. I lived in a wood sided house as a kid and it made a lot of noise that sounded like footsteps upstairs. The mention of “70 degrees” makes it likely that the noise is from the wood expanding and contracting from large temperature changes, or changes in humidity. Could be a spirit, but probably weather + old house.

i agree with you that old houses make expanding and contracting noises. my house was built in 1954 and it's not as old as ashleigh's house, but the "settling" noises my house makes are really loud. but, i still think ashleigh can tell the difference between house settling noises and footsteps on the stairs. no offense, btw.

Regarding hearing footsteps in older houses with wood floors. Sometimes, when you step on wooden steps, it presses the wood down, and then later, the wood pops up, sounding like someone is walking on wood floors or steps. At least that is what my dad told me. haha yes, we bought an old house and fixed it up. Before we put the new floors down, I was constantly hearing "footsteps" in another room when I was the only one there. It stopped once we fixed the floors.

They really do have the ice houses out on the lakes like you see in the movie, or at least did. I don't see them as much anymore. And yes, the building Ariel had outside her house was a sauna.
