Agreed,and im an Aussie. I live in Dartmoor and the snow and the log fire in my cottage really make me all happy. Much more happier than spending time with a bunch of loud mouthed Aussies on a beach drinking beer!!!

One of the great things about getting older is you detach yourself from all this rubbish. Divorced, so no worries about in-laws, sister in law, friends who don't bother with you anymore (post divorce), just my lovely Son, so he gets Cash, no tree, no cards, no crazy shopping, just a leisurely stroll round M and S, as per usual where Steak and Chips is on the menu for Christmas Lunch, a good bottle of wine, watch a film you saved for that day in peace. You've hit it, I hate Christmas xx

We only decorate one room, put up one string of lights around the porch, send gifts to children & only cards to adults (outside the household), gifts inside the family only. I do the cleaning & decorating, and my husband does the cooking. He’s a better cook than I am.

Delia and Nigella are rank amateurs at the game of perfectionistic guilt and would stand in AWE at the influence of one Martha Helen Kostyra Stewart. I'm not sure why she's not mentioned on the program, but she doesn't just nail you on food preparation. If the presents aren't wrapped consistently in the triple-creased tissue method or in a colour scheme which matches your homes' decor; if you've not made bundles of handmade gifts and ornaments or decorations to invoke an image of understated New England tastefulness and comfort; if you've not gone out to cut your own greenery and all of that jazz or recreated some obscure central European tradition, you're made to feel like a typical commercialized consumer. How's that for reverse psychology?
@scattysafari77429 жыл бұрын
+Kelly Vaters My guess is that Martha isn't a great influence outside the US. As an Aussie i never felt her influence very much but even my Mum had a Delia cookbook.Delia Smith was pretty much THE domestic goddess of the 1970s in the UK so it's natural they site her influence.
@kellyvaters16899 жыл бұрын
***** I wasn't aware that Martha's reach would be limited in that way. She had become so all-encompassing over here that if it had anything to do with home, Martha Stewart would be the first name (and often the only name) mentioned. It really wasn't until we got specialty networks like HGTV or the Food Network that her influence started to wane.
@lizzie18975 жыл бұрын
Kelly Vaters Amen sister you said a mouthful. Martha’s doesn’t want you to get it(how recipes of hers have you done and seen that she’s left something out). Martha trades in envy. That’s evil

I've spent Christmas in Australia, it was ok, but it wasn't festive at all, it was just a hot, normal day. You should be sitting by an open fire at Christmas! The best bit is being all wrapped up going for a walk in the freezing cold after dinner, - Not burning in the sun on a beach having a barbecue! - That's not Christmas! Plus the TV is SOOOOOOO much better in the UK!! All the Christmas specials...etc. (I lived in Oz for three years and am glad to be home).

It's the generation 'before last' of woman adopting attitudes from their pre and post war mothers of "You have to do it" I doubt any woman aged 25-35 make this much of a fuss or have the money to make much of a fuss, these are affluent woman with middle class anxieties. It's better to be a man at xmas because we don't readily adopt the bullshit side of xmas excess and just do the minimum neccessaries, tree and presents.

lol, i was discussing this with my friend the other day.. about how there's really no christmas culture adapted for countries in the southern hemisphere.. that'd go for new zealand and south africa too.. sitting by a roaring fire on christmas doesn't work down here for obvious reasons. So all we can really do is a half-assed antipodean adaption of what you europeans are doing but with cold meats and cold desserts. And so much wasted food, because nobody is really hungry in hot weather.
@xYoshiiiiox13 жыл бұрын
We've never had a real Christmas tree it's always been artificial, ours is a £120 one from John Lewis and looks better than a real one. A friend of mine had a real one and when I go and help decorate it I go mental with all the needles on the floor. We also decorate the tree together, look and move things about, then watch Scrooge.

I hope this is cheering for women who have similar experiences. Do they have no capacity to live according to what they find important, why are they bothering ?? In this day and age are heterosexual adult women really this miserable ? Why do they live like this if they dont like it? They are prosperous and educated. As a young woman I just think, wow, is this the best women can do for themselves ? Affluence and opportunity seem to have done little for this generation of baby boomers.

Was it, the woman who designed Christmas? Or was it men Who decided what we need and what to do and when to do it. SO if you know the answer then please stop picking on men. Malc UK
