Recall that Radio Shack had the same policy for their batteries. When a battery went dead the customer would just bring one in and exchange it for a replacement.
@jimlocke9320 Жыл бұрын
I can't recall ever buying Radio Shack Lifetime tubes but my recall is that they weren't very good tubes. The selling point was the lifetime warranty. Since I did repairs on other people's equipment, I wasn't about to pay extra for a lifetime warranty. A good name brand tube was preferable. I heard stories of customers taking gassy tubes back to Radio Shack and having them replaced with new gassy tubes. Eventually, many customers gave up and bought tubes from major manufacturers. Before Radio Shack went out of business, I understand that they were still replacing the Lifetime tubes, but with NOS tubes from other manufacturers and those tubes did not carry the lifetime warranty. Radio Shack may have gambled that tube equipment was becoming obsolete and that the Lifetime tubes would wind up in the trash before they had a chance to wear out.

German tube radios from this era are awesome!! The one in the video seems to be made for the US market. All of the German radios I have like this have all control titles in German, and the dial scale is cluttered with more than a hundred European cites, especially for the LW and MW bands. Also, the radio bands are labeled UKW/LW/MW/KW. At 42:27 was 93.5 KDAY, and that came in pretty clear for being a rather low-powered station. "I got 5 on it" made that speaker cloth dance!!
@michvod6 жыл бұрын
This one was made for the US market, as it has FM band up to 108 MHz and it also has CD or Civil Defense markings. And yes, the European radios have different band markings and lot more of cities marked on the dial, also the FM band at around that time was only 87.5 to 100 MHz in Europe (later extended to 104 and few years later to 108 MHz).
@LakeNipissing6 жыл бұрын
The FM "channel" numbers were different than used in the US as well, looks like 2 to 43 on a 1950s Siemens radio in here with UKW from 87 to 100. Another little-known dial scale marking is roman numerals I, II, III, IV, V, VI underscoring the LW scale similar to meter bands underscoring shortwave dial scales. This was in fact a system called "Telephonrundspruch" used to transmit radio programs over phone lines on six LW frequencies 175 kHz, 208 kHz, 241 kHz, 274 kHz, 307 kHz, 340 kHz. Apparently this was to provide programming for places like Switzerland, where the mountains blocked radio signals.
@AudioMobil6 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is an export model for the US market. Apart from the different frequency range and the writing on the dial scale it even has the typical socket on the back of the cabinet. German models always had a fixed power cord. In Germany those radios were sold under the brand name GRUNDIG, in the US they probably were imported by Majestic?
@watershed446 жыл бұрын

I used to seek out Grundig equipment when I was in the Army. Usually the equipment came from soldiers who returned from a tour in Germany and found that their great equipment did not work on the US Voltage. Usually all I had to do was find the switch on the back to turn it over to 110 60 HZ and it worked great. I Could usually get it for a song as the pawn shop would have it marked as non working. Many years back I did a search on Ebay for Grundig and found a transistor radio with that brand. A dog had used it for a chew toy so it was marred and I got it very cheap. I found the chewed parts on ebay for a reasonable price and repaired that. I was a bit dissapointed to find that it had been designed in America made in China from German parts. Thing works like a charm though, digital tuning for AM/FM/SW1/SW2/LW. I let my wife use it in the kitchen for years then she said it didn't work any more so I took it back and gave her a simple AM transistor which was all she needed anyhow, and after cleaning off all the grease and such, the little radio came back to life and has been working since. Sadly my wife works no more, having passed away two weeks ago. Yes, I am still wearing black, and waiting for her life insurance to help pay the thirteen thousand dollar bill for her funeral.

Today they are all gone from the scene. We can only reminisce now. In India, the great movie maker Raj Kapoor had made very big hits and Indian movies have songs and the 1950s saw many movies with great hit songs.Raj Kapoor had a closely knit team to churn out the hits. Lyricists Shailendra, Singer Mukesh, music director Shankar and Jaikishan. After all those people had died Raj Kapoor movies lost the old charm and the RK music. Similar to what you have requested the Germans.

My guess for the crisper sounding HF response might have to do with the FM pre-emphasis curve used in North America and Europe. In Europe, it's 50 us. Here in North America, it's 75 us. There's more HF headroom with 50 us despite slightly less noise reduction in the receiver.

Hey, fun video!! I'll note what you said about the sound quality even though I'm not into radio's (I watch your videos for fun, general knowledge, rf, practical stuff) . That blender wants new windings, comm bars, brushes, driver transistors and maybe even some surface mount components now. It's ready for one of those "$5 but must take - all" bargain boxes at the flea market, not that you'd do that.

At 47:44 top dial cord shows spring looks like a bunch of 2's or Z's .. And yes working on these radios is a PITA makes you want to Hide in the Closet and play with Matches and Gasoline wile doing a Drought Dance..

I agree about the sound quality of German Radios. I have an early 60s Telefunken in our living room and when we have guests they cannot believe the sound quality that comes out of it.
