That's a lot of combat footage within small laser range! I find it's much easier to be an effective commander when enemy units are 400 meters out or farther. To that end, one section of my lance is dedicated to close combat, with a fast striker/scout such as a Jenner and a well-armored 'blocker' such as a Hunchback, Kintaro, or Orion. To support them, I find hard-hitting long range configurations work best. Mechs like the Vindicator, Crab, Griffin, or custom builds using an Assassin or Enforcer are my personal top picks for a medium command mech.

Sure, and I appreciate standoff weapons too. They can really help to lower repair costs, etc. But I also love to brawl and medium lasers and srms are just too good in terms of DPS to tonnage and heat load. That's why I prefer them on medium mechs where tonnage is limited. I also try to setup my lances with two medium/short range mechs and two longer range mechs--the AI does really well with PPC's. However, even then, I'm usually piloting the scout/flanker as in the video above. My favorite mech for this is the hero Blackjack with 6Xmachineguns and medium lasers!

The Trebuchet hero mech is pretty sweet. 5 missile hardponts, I load it with 5x SRM4's. That alpha strike blows up most other mechs of same size and severely damages heavier mechs as well. Particularly if you can circle around to the back it can unload a 1 Alpha strike KO!

I forget it's designation, I think it's the AL, but the laserboat Centurion is a fantastic mech. Twin large or large pulse in the right arm, twin mediums in the CT, scrap missiles entirely or put something small in there, everything else into heat sinks, Armor, and engine size.

Any energy boat is automatically good, _especially_ in the Succession Wars era. The Centurion-AL, Crab, Grasshopper (especially the -5N, although annoyingly it's a 3040 design even though it's basic tech), Black Knight etc. are all top-tier Mechs. Shoutout to the Fire Javelin and the "F" variant of the Jenner too. I feel like Battletech needs a rebooted revised edition to fix the crazy imbalance and streamline the rules but... I guess that exists and it's called Alpha Strike.

I picked up my first hero kintato....and....im in $&@#ing LOVE, everything i want in a mech. Its amazing how a medium mech can take out heavies and assault mech with such ease....i cant stress enough how important this mech is to ANY commander...with ANY variant

My mentality when playing this game is essentially how quickly can it headshot something and still be standing, and if not, how well can it assist me in headshotting what I can't. I feel so strongly about this that I start to think how dangerous the clans would be if they weren't concerned with honor and just went straight for the throat every time.

I will always love the crab 27sl. Small, decent armour and good mobility with jump jets. Use pulse lasers for more DPS or PPC for a sneaky sniper.

Even before watching the video, The best medium mechs are either a Hunchback 4P or Kintaro. Aka either lots of SRMs or Lots of medium lasers.

I know you've basically made one already, but I would have gone with the HBK-4SP which has the SRM-6 on either side of the torso. They're really hard to find, tho.

I started building Kintaros based on your recommendation…. My fav medium. I like Wolverines too. Build my med command mechs now with a PPC, 2x SRM 4s, and an LRM. Or 3 srms and no lrm. I give them to Goblin, too although his probably have 2 AC 2s and set on anti-air mode. Kintaros are the one medium I’ll run with a heavy lance. Although I build a version of Black Knight similarly outfitted. I no longer worry when enemies run among the lance or are dropped right on us. Me & Goblin eat them quick with SRMs. Just hold down the chain fire button… lol.

Ahhh the hunchback my favorite medium mech. I associate it with the Semi trucks of the U.S. Tough, durable and a reliable workhorse of any lance. That AC 20 helps it hold it's own even against the lighter assault mechs.

Use srm4 instead of srm6 and put superchargers in your lancemate mechs. They'll do more damage and take far less. This is true in almost every mech.

Try a hero blackjack - x6 mguns, x2 M Lasers, x1 LP Laser, max armor. Go for the legs. Feels like cheating. Can solo other mediums faster than your entire lance did

I've played only with the old Elite-s (and Mercenary before that), I've bought the current one for tribute. Wow that Hunch build is an amazing!. Gonna try that out tomorrow. Might put only the arm lasers on 1 so your LMB clicks can shoot down helos? Then the rest go in your alpha-strike group, and split them up into lighter heat hit groups, too…? and I sometimes hop mechs so I leave them for my AI pilots. Is that not a good idea?

I built that Hunch with a porcupine chest full of lasers…. He got more kills that everyone but me, heheh. I finally realized that I even Could change their fighting style. Changed all the mechs to something logical and now they only mill about with enemy mechs when the enemy drops a handful on my firing line, doh. For That, my new Hunch build AI earned his whole payday. Got a kill with his fists, too lol.

Best commander medium mech ive try - phx-2hx with ecm amd jump jets. Because your buddies stupid dmg sponges and you need run away fast as possible (not always but repairs will be cheaper). Lighter you are = heavier you lancemates = moar armour = no loss components o injures = fast repair\ no recovery = no waste money and time = moar money. 💵💵💵💵
