He was using multiphonics. Singing and playing at the same time. It's not terrible to do with two notes. Then he holds up 3 fingers because somehow he's getting three. Wow.....Just wow....

I saw him at the Sydney Town Hall playing bee bop on a tuba and with one hand and jazz piano with the other simultaneously. He professionally also plays sax, cornet & trumpet, flugelhorn, trombone, clarinet, euphonium and double bass, and when I say play, I mean at a world class level. He also has a great understanding of musical history, which he often shares during his performances. In fact, he can, if he wishes, place the title Professor before his name, because he had taught for many years as adjunct professor at an Australian university.

For those curious, I'm only 60% sure so take it with a grain of salt, but I believe he gets 3 notes from 1 - the trombone 2 - humming into the trombone 3 - polyphonic humming into the trombone (singing two notes at the same time by manipulating the space in your mouth) here is an example of polyphonic singing: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJqZYpKAg8iShMU

You may not have noticed but that brass thing a ma jiggy with the bell on the end and the sliding brass tube is known to us old timers as a trombone. (often referred to by some of the guys in the band as a "Slush Pump".)

2:46 I'm tired of playing 10 notes at a time: Take that you bloody key... ROFL Ps I've listened to this 200 times and it never ceases to make me smile, from the "oh shit I'm supposed to be playing the piano..." to the "I thank you..." wave of the trumpet off the piano break to the "you know what... f that" moment after the first trumpet high note (trombone "meh... but... I can do this... and all in first position..." :-) Love it all Enjoy

For those of you guys who says he’s playing without moving the slide your correct but near the tuning slide of a trombone (The top)There is a trigger where if your in 1st position of a trombone and you pull the trigger It goes from B to C

Is he using a trumpet tongue with the trombone? At 1:00, his attacks sound different from usual trombonist playing.

he's just using a lot of vibrato and pulling away from the notes right after he hits them.

It's multiphonics, he plays one note and sings another. Which creates that sort of distorted funk sound.

well a trigger a trombone is actually slightly harder to play high notes on as it has a larger bore but the trigger allows him to play more notes in between and also hes so good that high notes arent a problem XD
