I really like this method of 2 way / intermediate switch wiring as you always have the neutral at the switching point so you could tap off it at a later date for extra lighting or when fitting a smart switch. Took me a couple mins to wrap my head around it but it’s pretty much the same as single and earth being the permanent line from the board at one end and switched at the other to the lamp with the twin strappers in between. Very good!!

I remember seeing a similar thing like this in the old wiring colours. Red from supply was in common as with switch line on opposite switch. The black from both twins were connected to the blue of 3 core L1 and L2 were red and yellow respectively yellow. Whenever I watch your videos brings back memories of my college years of 95 to 97

I mean, the vast majority of the world already does. And granted that the brown/black/grey phase colors are very fecal in nature… but it’s an extremely widespread color scheme. Time for the US to join the rest of the world! Not that they ever will.

Thanks very much great informative video. This is all new to me using the grey as carrying the neutral on through so i really enjoyed learning about that. Am i right in saying that in the 3 plate method theres no neutral at all at the switch and they are all line connectors either switching line and 1 perm at the first switch and the role of the 3 core is to carry the common on through to the final switch not mattering if theres 1 or 10 intermediate switches in between and that the other 2 conductors of the 3 core cable link up the L1 and L2 to the intermediate and last two way switch and theres no neutral whatsoever because its at the 3 plate in the ceiling so this is only for 2 plate because the neutral is at the first switch and its not needed at the intermediate and final 2 way switch but its vitally important at the light fitting and this is why its carried through to here. Does that make any sense at all Gaz lol.

If that’s in the Am2 could you just use the long lead method for r1+r2 and test between cu and earth at the light to get the overall R2 as it’s the furthest point and test between live at the board to live at the light as it’s the furthest point and operate the switches and the highest will be my R1 so I would just add them up to have overall R1+R2 for the circuit?? Hi, re the Wired Through the Switch 2 Way and Intermediate video. In my wall switch, I have 3 wires. 1) brown wire going to common, 2) grey wire with brown sleeve going to L2 and 3) black wire with brown sleeve going to L3. Please can you help me understand how this configuration wires into a smart switch?

Also I came across the normal 2 way method without neutral. I found the yellow and blue as strappers and red in common from 1 switch. On the other switch I found the red from twin and earth in common from 3 core yellow and blue as strappers and the red of the 3 core was connected on the black of twin and earth with connector. All colours were marked with red sleeves. Some I've seen black was in common and reds connected on a connector block. Is that still

The way I think of the new colours when deciding what core to use for CPC, Line and Neutral: Red (line) = Brown = L1 Yellow (Earth) = Black = L2 Blue (neutral) = Grey = L3 In old colours, when using 3 core for single phase, yellow would be Earth to match green and yellow. Blue would be neutral to match the blue in flex (which was brown and blue long before the harmonised colours came into force). Therefore, sticking with that principle, the yellow is now black, therefore black is Earth. Blue is now grey, therefore grey is neutral. Sorted.

If, in wired through switch, the feed to the light goes to the first switch where we have our permanent live, how will we wire the intermediate or the last of two way switch?

@Troy Mclore what if tye permanent live goes into common and we use twin & earth for the L1 & L2?
@asadng29203 жыл бұрын
@Troy Mclore with no intermediate switch. I dont need to connect brown in the commons. I can use twin & earth in L1 & L2. Can I?
@asadng29203 жыл бұрын
@Troy Mclore thanks for your reply Sir. I'm not working as electrician though i did my city&guild and 17th addition long ago. My electrician (from China) rewired my house and he wired through the switches for lights. We used to do the loop in method in the ceiling. Wired through the switches was not very common in my work when i did some work as an electrician. So for my understanding when wiring through the switch, permanent live goes into L1, the switch live (load) goes into L2 and from three core cable for second two way switch brown goes into commons black (with brown sleeve) goes into L1 of the first and second switch and grey goes into L2 of both switches where there is no intermediate switch. Neutral of load is connected to the feed in neutral ( which comes with permanent live as twin and earth).

When I was an apprentice I was taught not to wire this way basically the feed one end and the sw the other as you would do in singles years later I noticed in an on site guide think it the yellow one telling you not to do it as it interferes with induction loops Has this changed

I asked a question on my last job as to why we had wired feeds to lighting position instead of the switch knowing JB would now have to be used everywhere and was given the strangest look from the foreman and simple told "you dont wire neutrals down to switch". I wanted to say I'd seen it done many times before so what was his reasoning but the look he gave told me not to bother asking.can you clear this up at all?

Was it wired in singles or T+E? if it was singles then that will be why you dont take it down to switch

@@drpantastic1969 ah even still there isn’t a need for neutral at the switch using jb method, it can be taken to switch but for ease of wiring it’s taken straight from jb
@drpantastic19693 жыл бұрын
I thought for ease of wiring it's better to have feeds at switches(neutrals connected in a block) then you would only have maximum of 2 cables at at lighting points eliminating need for j.bs .is there a regulation on this or is it just choice? I'm sure I ve seen a switch with an unswitched neutral terminal built in like a connector block to accommodate this style of wiring
