GSP has my respect but that knife advice is terrible and will get you killed. For a knife you force distance and remove your shirt and span it between your hands. Then let the attacker swing. Block the blade with the shirt pulled taut. Eventually it'll tangle in the shirt and they either release it or sacrifice control of an arm.

Saying that "The minute you touch me, you are declaring war", taken literally, is terrible advice. It flies in the face of how the world works. Simply touching someone can mean a lot of things. Responding to a touch with a non-proportional response is generally unwise. Is it wise to escalate? As a general rule, no. The other person may have a range of intentions. Example #1: a drunk person bumps into you on accident. Intention to fight: unlikely. Example 2: dude pushes his finger into your sternum. Intention to intimidate or fight: high. Now, if your intuition says you are about to get attacked, you can choose step away. Do that. Don't try to diffuse a boiling situation with words -- by the time emotions have got that hot, they don't cool down easily. Rationality is probably a lost cause. Trying to diffuse the situation only with words is risky. Step back, use body language to show you aren't a threat. Be the wiser person. Your anger and ego might not like these non-violent options, but the violent outcomes tend to be worse, even if you "win".

But he doesn't discuss the consequences of fighting (winning or losing) nor alternatives to the Krav Maga style eye and groan strikes. A video of this length can't cover much, I get it. Still, I find this one somewhat irresponsible. I think Lex could have done better in editing. This is not his first rodeo.

@@veridianr2490 this is true. Years ago when I was younger my ex got threatened by a group of guys on her birthday in London. Me being the ultra male had to do something. Was completely outnumbered, had something to prove. Did well, they couldn’t fight all that well and I managed to stay up. That’s when one of them pulled a knife. By gods grace I have no idea how - maybe due to the sheer amount of adrenaline I managed to fight him off without getting harmed. After, I felt like such a strong man and was so proud of myself. Now I look back and I’m embarrassed, it could’ve gone so fucking wrong so easily and I would’ve left the love of my life bleeding out on the pavement whilst she cried. Best thing I could’ve done would be to tell her to ignore them, get her and her friends safely away and just leave.

He also basically ran down the second guys teachings from cobra kai to Daniel, if your opponent cannot see he cannot fight, if he cannot breath he cannot fight, if he cannot stand he cannot fight. You take away any of these things from your opponent and you win the fight.

The part of the video about going for the eyes so quickly was not persuasive nor useful. First, avoiding a fight is preferable. Second, the context and environment is key. Sure, there are times when you "fight for your life", but this is not *all the time*. Where in the video does GSP talk about the context? Nuance is not something that GSP communicates well here in this video.

Valuable information. We all basically know this. The difference between ‘basically’ knowing it and actually using it in an emergency is the fact that we don’t ever apply it, especially on a day to day basis when training for our next UFC fight. The key for this info to be helpful to the average person watching this video is to ‘study/practice/memorize’ it. That’s when the information becomes MOST valuable.

So much of fighting is muscle memory and practice. Anytime you ever listen to someone teach self-defense, listen closely. You'll hear a lot of: if the opponent does this, then you do this. In a real life fight situation, you don't have time to think through that stuff. What GSP shows here is a mastery of joint locks, striking, and other offensive techniques that comes from years if not decades of practice. He's right about a lot of core principles: 1) don't fight fair. There's no ref, so strike the groin, the eyes, the neck, the soft spots where you can inflict maximum damage. In a fight for your life, you fight dirty. 2) Avoid fighting weapons, especially blades. You will get cut. It's a matter of who gets it worse, you or the bad guy. Avoid if at all possible. 3) If you can't avoid, put yourself in a position to win. Strike quickly and leave. Anyway, loved the video. I'm always a fan of GSP, and a fan of the insights you get when you interview. (10 month "late" comment for the algorithm)

I was jumped in a dark ally by 2 thugs last year. Went on for about 5 mins. One guy told the other “get him down so we can finish him”. I believe staying on my feet, and causing one of the guys to lose interest by eye gauging him saved my life. Btw you know how they say, how your life flashes before your eyes.. when I was being forced to the ground, each one my kids ran through my mind, to see them again, I had to stay up. Stay safe!

Though I know this to be more common now, people with this strong energy had a time in their life that they felt as weak as a feather. Best tactic to me is to avoid fighting at all. There is nothing wrong about it especially if you are not an experienced fighter. Street fights are dirty and without rules, so you never know if your opponent has someone in the back, weapon, etc. So most of the time it is better to run.

@@polderrican Yes, I trained in his first gym in Montréal for about two years. He taught a few of the classes, but most of the classes I attended were taught by brown and black belt students. Prof. Fernandes was usually present during the classes to evaluate our progress, conduct belt promotions, etc. I only met GSP two times: once at a nightclub, and once at the Gracie Barra gym.

To hit first is great advice when you're in a situation where you can't escape and see no other outcome than to fight and defend yourself, why let the other person get the upper hand by waiting for them to hit first.. I've actually had to follow this advice growing up and it has helped me in the situation more so than running and having the problem return all the time.. But one thing is for sure, teachers doesn't care mostly, so if you defended yourself you'll most likely end up as the one starting the whole thing even if you wanted no part of it. Here in Norway it's also not allowed to use more than necessary force to defend yourself against a threat. So if someone is trying to hit you with their fists then you can't use a weapon against them, or if someone runs at you with a knife you wouldn't be allowed to shoot them, you'd have to use equal force and you can't just hit first, even if you know you're going to get attacked at any moment. You could risk getting punished for using more force than necessary to defend yourself, I kind of understand that for some stuff.. But Jesus, they've made it challenging with how those laws works here, so much so that my girlfriend's little brother got put in prison for hitting someone back when defending himself, reason being is that some of his drunk friends decided they wanted to jump the guy afterwards even when my girlfriend's brother wasn't even involved in the whole thing anymore.

Not only the element of surprise but also how to set up your target by understanding body mechanics, by blocking either from your left or right to make sure your target doesn't hit back and at the same time attacking the eye. @@BaconRecoil You're much more likely to be murdered or assaulted if you draw a weapon on someone in defense. Once a firearm is drawn there's no longer the "flight" mechanism in the mind of the assailant, there's only a fight or die mechanism that takes over in the brain. If you do have a firearm, keep it hidden and don't draw it until they approach you directly with a weapon. You're best off to keep it hidden and just hint at it's existence by putting your hand in your jacket, etc. It's all psychological. Unless of course you want your children to get charged with manslaughter for shooting an unarmed man. Even if they WERE going to get in a fist fight, there's no proof of that without a weapon and the ends don't justify the means. This obsession with the firearm really has caused a lot of hubris, idiocy and tens of thousands of kids of prison for years on end who took another persons life out of what they culturally were taught was fine to do - to take another mans life because he was having a bad day and started screaming at you. Ask any public defense attorney and they'll tell you where giving an 18 year a weapon will get them. Sorry to disrupt your previously held belief that taking another mans life is legal and just dandy, because they're the "other". You'll also see your child sued into abject poverty by the person they shot, or the family of the victim. (They became the victim, of course, because you made it that way instead of just teaching your child to run away from unarmed assailants instead of reaching for a firearm.) They won't be as lucky as a police officer who can just claim he saw him reaching for a knife but it was just a cell phone.

Well that's what training is for jerk. You know what prepares one for being calm while being punched in the face? Getting punched in the face. Muscle memory doesn't leave you just because you're not calm. I can't even remove the top of a bottle and take a drink from it without bringing my other hand holding the cap up to the side of my head. That muscle memory won't allow me to. Stress doesn't make you forget how to breathe or move or pump blood. You don't learn how to fight. You train your body to fight.

2 big difference between street fight and MMA: - Potential presence of weapons (knife, beer bottle, piece of rock, anything other than bare fist) - Multiple opponents If the fight is fair, and the above 2 are not an issue, then it is largely the same as in the octagon. Otherwise it is about keeping distance, keep all opponents on the same direction, and leave the scene as soon as possible. Krav-maga is really good at these. As for fighting style, avoid kicks, as it can easily backfire. Maybe push kick to create distance. Boxing is effective there. Avoid going down, but most street fight end up on the ground anyway, so knowing BJJ is essential.

Thanks for this Lex, always enjoyed your programs and as a martial artist myself, adding a bit of self defence to this one, made it more interesting to me and may well just have saved a few of your subscribers lives! As knives were mentioned and my art is blade orientated, from my own perspective, while it's always better to maintain distance and get away if you can, when cornered and forced to defend yourself, the golden rule is, be as close as you can to a gun and as far away as possible from a knife. A gun can kill you at any range, so you stand more chance of hitting/disarming the assailant when close. If you knock the person down, make sure they aren't getting up again, pick up the weapon and take it to the police, so the attacker cannot shoot you as you run away. Don't you just hate it in the movies, when people fighting for their lives leave weapons behind, or don't take the gun off their assailant when they have the chance, so the assassin gets up and shoots them later!!! With knives, unless they throw the blade, a knife can only kill you up close, keep your distance to avoid being stabbed, use your long range weapons lead leg kick and jab and use the Bruce Lee, Inosanto JKD style of hitting and blocking at the same time. As a last resort if a blade comes in don't just watch it stab you, grab the assailants wrist in both hands and use your free body parts, knees, kicks, stamps, head butt and bight etc to destroy the attacker. Alternatively swing them around and throw them into something hard like a door or wall. Most importantly, in any self defence situation, always use a weapon of some kind as this is your best chance and it may also deter an attacker from coming close, so you can get away! When I was first told this by my teacher, I thought that sounds cowardly, but the truth is, self defence means defending yourself and your loved ones' without risking your health or serious injury', some people are highly trained, so even if you know how to fight, without a weapon you will have to be at your best to beat them.. For this reason, always use a weapon, consider what you are carrying pens, keys, bag etc, or grab a bottle, shoe, rolled up magazine, a stick, your belt or even a coat etc and swing it around to keep them away, then use your kicks to the groin, jabs to the eyes when the opportunity arises and follow up with hard hits. Lastly, you are surrounded by hard fixed weapons perfect fro smashing people in to, doors, the wall, lamp posts, the floor, vehicles and other objects, slam you opponent into them and if they are really trying to kill you, make sure they aren't capable of getting up again before you run away. As you saw in John Wick, any weapon is a good weapon, even a 'Fk'g pencil' :0) Keep up the great work.

GSP is an great guy!! My experience in street fights as a former nightclub bouncer is that people with knives try to stab instead of slash.. (I think it is an emotional thing) either way.. even fighting people.. the hardest thing you can hit someone is with the pavement.. followed by a light pole or car.. I worked that side gig for 3 1/2 years and never threw a punch.. stomped a few.. sure.. but mostly just taking advantage of the attack.. everyone watches UFC.. everyone thinks you have to strike.. as a former wrestler it was bon appetit

The knife is a contact weapon, so you just roll back on the ground and keep the attacker at a distance from your vital organs while you pull out your gun. That's in case there is nowhere to run or you are not a good runner. Otherwise run, get enough distance and again pull out the gun. If he manages to slash the sole of your shoe or even better - cut your leg, this along with the gunshot wounds going at an upwards angle is what will make for the best outcome with the prosecution later.
