Holy shit! What a neat thing for beginners, and pros for that matter, but beginners, as you know, can drive the whole family crazy, while practicing and learning how to play.. My wife's Grandfather use to play the fiddle, and it was bequeathed to her 1st cousin. In which I knew and played in a band with him before I even knew her. He plays everything including that beautiful fiddle. He never mention anything about a silent fiddle, ever, nor have I even knew it existed, until you introduced on one of you shows, a month or so ago. Your critiquing of different instruments, and so forth is invaluable, as well.This is why you are so valuable to new people wanting to learn to play music. You give up you time to try, to 'help others'. Your fountain of knowledge is really remarkable, even to me, in which I've been playing music since 12, but especially to others just starting out playing. It doesn't get any more noble or human than that. Can't wait for you fiddle show tonight. Love your programs on KZbin...

This is my first video of your's i have watched. Cool. I play keyboards, guitars, violin (Yamaha sv-200 electric violin), harmonicas, latin percussion. However, i never played in front of an audience. I'm 64 and started playing violin 3 weeks ago. I just subscribed.

JP, you are quite an amazing musician. I love your reviews because your experience really comes through. Your honest assessments based on the things that matter to a true musician are priceless. I really appreciate this one because I've been wanting to learn how to play the fiddle for a long, long time. These "silent" instruments are the way to go.

Thanks JP for a great review of the YEV104 Electric Violin. We appreciate your candid review. One small point to mention. The 1/4" jack will not work with headphones as there is no preamp to process the signal. It is purely a passive jack so you can more easily use a DI, effects pedals and such for performance. To use headphones you would need a small amp like the a THR with a headphone jack so you could plug in headphones. But as you pointed out, it works very well for practicing with the soft sound produced by the string vibrations on their own.

I love your guitar reviews, and your fiddle review is just as great. I don't need to plug in my fiddle, otherwise the Yam might be on my shopping list. Second tune Teetotaller's Reel? What was the lovely first Strathspey?

very cool! sounded great! now I want to learn fiddle so I can play one of those! BTW, I've been playing "silent" guitars since I got my first solid-body electric. Played unplugged they are easy to hear and practice with with no-one else (more than 10' away...) able to listen to your attempts at the learning curve. I never really understood the need for "practice amps" other than to play with effects at a low(er) volume, not so much actual guitar practice - unless you are practicing using your effects... I am shy about being loud when I don't really know what I am doing. That did not stop me from getting a real nice Spark however... ;) Glad I found your channel J.P.!

Isn’t this a YEV104? The YSV looks very different. (I have a YEV104. I use it with a ToneDexter with a violin profile that sounds great - really helps it sound more like an acoustic violin through a good microphone. I also use a wireless guitar transmitter that fits discreetly beneath the violin. Love not having a cable dragging from the instrument.)
@chrisreesor86353 жыл бұрын
Yes Doug. This is indeed the YEV104 Electric Violin. It is designed as a performance instrument, not a silent practice instrument. The YSV104 does indeed look different and is designed solely as a practice instrument. Having said that, by using a small practice amp like a Yamaha THR amp, you can plug in headphones and use the YEV as a practice instrument. Or just unplugged as JP demonstrated in his video. The newest models of the THR amps have a built in bluetooth connection for a wireless transmitter like the Line 6 G10 Relay.

@@chrisreesor8635 Yes, I have a YEV 104, but the reviewer kept calling it a YSV104 (silent violin). I checked stores and Yamaha to see if there was actually a new model but couldn’t find any hints of a new YSV104 model that looked like a YEV104. I’ve tried using headphones with various small devices to drive the headphones, but prefer wireless to the ToneDexter and a small multi-FX pedal, into a small acoustic amplifier.

@@flatpicknut There is a YSV104 but it looks more like the discontinued SV130.

I remember when you played that silent fiddle years ago. I didn’t remember that it was red, but what I do remember is that it was really cool. If memory serves me, it was at SAERC in Port Hawkesbury.

You know how many fiddles I've mixed, that sounds better than a lot of the pickups I've come across. Knowing your amp like I do, I figure I could put that in a mix with very little work, because so many pickup systems sound like arse and need so much work to kinda make them sound like a violin. Miss ya my friend.
@joemcgraw55293 жыл бұрын
John so the bridge is floating but you cant take it off to set it up? Maybe they should have done something else with the pickup who knows but yes would be very hard to set up the bridge on the violin but sounds amazing
@chrisreesor86353 жыл бұрын
Hello Joe. The bridge can be taken off to make adjustments. It's not completely easy and you need to look at the owners manual to see how to do it. The cable from the bridge is able to be unplugged so you can remove the bridge and make adjustments.

I CAN HEAR, LIKE, A TAPPING SOUND, WHEN YOU PLAY THE FAST PARTS. THE OFF SWITCH IS LIKELY FOR WHEN IT'S PLUGGED DIRECTLY INTO THE MIXING BOARD.

With headphones on, is it completely silent? The sound only comes from the headphones or does the instrument still make a sound? wondering if I can use this to practice late at nights.

It is a beautiful instrument I'll admit that. My only pet peeve with Yamaha and other makers is that they do not offer a left-hand model. And no, I will not even entertain the thought of playing right-handed when I was born a lefty like millions of other people.

We expect Americans to butcher "foreign" names, but expectations for Canadians are higher. D'Addario is not prounounced "dee-a-dairy-o" but rather "dad-r-ee-o". Emphasis on the "r". Otherwise love your postings, so much so that I just bought myself a Yamaha LL16 in brown burst. Wouldn't mind seeing more silent violin reviews.
