GSX-S1000GT Hot Start Rattle - What i found when doing oil change. I think it's all tensioner related and tensioner noise and not the chain, or pistons etc... Please share what you think about that.

This is standard for all Japanese performance and superbikes. It's nothing to worry about. It can't harm your motorbike. Don't worry about it. If it was a massive problem they would have stopped making this bike in 2022 or they would have started recalling them for the tensioner to be changed.

I have the '22 naked. The rattle appeared after first oil change. After that it comes and goes. Its very normal on japanese performance bikes from last 5-10 years or so. Kawasaki, Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda. Its the cam chain tensioner. Nothing to worry about.

Hello! Had the same problem. Tuned GSXR K8. First time i heared the knicking sound at 55.000 km before i did valve adjustment. At 86.000 km again valve check all gaskets, cam chain + tensioner + all guides from it changed. So lets see now. Im not worried. At Suzuki motorbikes is this normal because of low oil pressure as you mentioned :) cheers from SLOVENIA! ❤

I took my 2023 GSX-S1000 GT to the dealer today (11-4-23)to get the ticking/knocking checked out. first they said they could not even look at it for several months. I asked if they could listen to it to see if it was serious. i showed them a video of the bike making a grinding sound when i release the throttle. then we went out and started the bike. it rattled on startup(COLD). the mechanic said it was probably the cam chain tensioner and cam chain guide. he said he has had to replace several of them on these bikes. also said that he had one come in that had a valve retainer clip come off and he ended up replacing the entire head. Suzuki used faulty parts or something. he also said mine was making the grinding sound when i released the throttle was probably because when the engine's RPMs drops so does the oil pressure which made the cam tensioner not work properly. he also told me if there was anyway I could,, to NOT RIDE the bike until it can be fixed. $16,000 for a bike I can't ride,,LMAO... no more Suzuki for me. Suzuki changed the design of the can system in 2022. 2021 and before used a adjustable tensioner. 2022 they switched to hydrolic adjusters.

I just bought a 2024 GSXS 1000 GT(1 WEEK AGO). I was aware of this issue, and spoke to my mechanic buddy in great length. The fact that it only happens after the first oil change is indicative of oil viscosity's effect on the cam chain tensioner. Lots of guys went to 20w/50, and it stopped the noise. I only have 75 miles on the bike, and no unusual noise. Hopefully, they fixed it on the 2024...

Be interested to know how ‘safe’ it is to go to this thicker oil viscosity warranty wise.

Agree. There obviously is SOME problem. Even if it's not "dangerous", a modern engine shouldn't make that noise. It's keeping me away too, and I'm a long-time Suzuki fan.

update... after researching the issue for my GSX-S1000 GT Plus I found that they are claiming it is the valve clearances and the tensioner. but mostly the valve clearances. the tensioner doesn't need replacing(in most cases) just resetting. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXizm3-jjcmqqM0 this is a video about the bulletin on the valve clearance. I have been researching on forum sites, repair shops, and watching tons of videos,, most are all saying the bikes just need to have the valves re-adjusted. I don't know but it looks like it could cost anywhere between $200 and up to several THOUSANDS of Dollars,,depending on where you take it and what needs to be done. Valve shim kits run around $80. the gasket for the tensioner runs from $10 to $50. if the bike is fairly new most the other gaskets should be fine,, but can get costly if you do need to replace them. either way,,,unless you have a shop and some knowledge of working on motorcycle engines,,, this is a job for a repair shop...DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME....

Got my GT as soon as it landed in Canada (October 2022) and could only put 630 km before the snow came... BUT from day one, I have been complaining to my dealer and Suzuki Canada about the noise and they all said it's normal. I now have just over 13,000 km and haven't had any breakdowns or anything but its annoying to have to be told, "its normal".

my 2023 GSX-S1000 GT Plus will knock for a few seconds when first started if it sits for a week or so without being started. I get the normal tick when it sets for a few hours or days. damn thing has almost 4k miles on it.

Just took my naked to the dealer today for this same noise. It started on the first start after the 600 mile oil change. I told them about the valve clearance and how the tensioner doesn't seem to fix anything. We will see what they say.

I just completed a 3,600 klm trip on my new GSX S1000 GT and the rattle developed during the trip. The bike goes into the dealer next week for their assessment. Problem or not, I want it on the record that I have raised the issue should some catastrophic failure occur after warrant period.

I was thinking about this bike, as I've owned a dozen Suzukis before. This rattle would drive me crazy. QUESTION: Is this tensioner really Hydraulic? Then I could see it being the problem, especially when the oil is hot (thin) and the bike is idling low. PS- I love my old GSF1200S, everything simple and reliable.

Suzuki They have changed the tensioner design on these 22 reg onward GT bikes the early Gsx s 1000 from 2015 to 2020 uses the older better racket tooth design from the k5 1000 which I have found way more reliable I am sure the earlier design would fit & work better my trust in suzuki workshop guys is mostly to be took with a pinch of salt running the earlier 2015 - 2020 bike tensioner setup should sort out the rattle

On my 2023 GT, I have a rattle that goes away pretty quickly. Primarily on a hot start, but it needs to be off for 10 minutes or thereabouts. I'm guessing it takes at least that amount of time for the tensioner to depreasurize....? I'd also guess these quirky tensioners behave a little differently on each unit. Best cure is foam ear plugs, or I'll take a ride on my old Harley, then go back to Suzi. 😂

I have my helmet on by the time I start my bikes so it quiets down alot. I also came from old Harleys and if people are unhappy by a little tensioner noise, they should hear and old pushrod tractor motor run. 😂

Same problem. The rattle came after 1000 km after te first service. When the engine is hot, the noise begins at about 2000 rpm and disappears above 3000. It is louder when I stop the hot bike and restart it after a few minutes. Playing with the throttle the rattle becomes more silent or disappears. The dealer and my private mechanic said don't worry....But I am worrying a little bit ...I'd like a smooth clear engine sound!

Whilst hydraulic cam chain tensioners are popular in many internal combustion engines, in the end, it all comes down to the tensioners' design . The idea is that as the chain stretches, the hydraulic tensioner takes up the slack. The problem is that unless the design is absolutely perfect, any undue slack will very often manifest as a mechanical rattle. From what I have read this hydraulic tensioner is a new addition to this engine and spoils this engines reputation, which is legendary. I have seen this before where a manual cam chain tensioner has been superceded by an automatic/hydraulic tensioner, and problems follow. Hopefully, Suzuki will put their hands up to the problem and do a recall on the effected engines. If they choose to ignore the customers, it will cost them more in the end.

Be nice if there was an aftermarket manual asjustable tensioner to fit. Question is where does the oil enter this part to pressurise it? Is it something that can get blanked off?

I believe there is a owner problem with being in the proper gear, most people want to ride in the lowest rpm possible and not within the rpm that gives the torque or hp they need and they are lugging the bike without knowing, they never learn the bikes proper power band and to ride out of the proper gear will give you low oil pressure, most believe they will use more gas or cause more wear and tear but thats not true the proper layer of oil between parts can not form unless you are within the proper rpm for your speed, wind resistence, uphills, body weight and several other factors. Oil changes in the manuel are a base line and may not apply to you, you may need to change your oil every 800~1000 miles because of your riding habits and enviornment.😮 or don't buy a sport bike, buy a low rpm v-twin cruiser which are more forgiving to unexperienced high rpm and short oil change intervals😮.
