GTA Online Has Never Come Close To Being A Good Game

I have played 8800 hours of GTA 5, but only 100 hours of GTA Online. There is a reason for this difference, and it is Rockstar's terrible decisions from start to finish. I would love to enjoy GTA Online, I wish it could have come close to capturing the magic that is GTA 5, but it doesn't. It never has. GTA fans deserved better but I don't think Rockstar is capable any more of giving them what they deserve

I mean you got the best one in, which is that the whole thing is really convoluted and unintuitive. When I tried giving it a go about 8 months ago, it took my mate about 2 hours to explain the whole CEO, VIP, crew, facility, and all the other bullshit that doesn't exist in any other games to me. I still don't fully get it or why they decided to do it this way. I gave it a shot and got to maybe lvl 20 before realising it just wasn't fun in any way, let alone well optimised or polished.

Anybody notice that cars drive into you on purpose in GTA online? Never once happened in single player. There is no reason why the AI would turn so sharply to the right when they are on the part of the road to turn left. I'm pretty sure this is to make it more challenging but it's not it's just stupid and annoying and I have never once crashed into a car that randomly turned into me and thought "damn that was a fun challenge"

Yeah i actually read that back in the Halloween update back in 2019 Rockstar added a series of “pranks” and one of which was cars were to purposely crash into you. They never removed it but in a halloween update back in 2021 they lowered the intensity but it’s still outrageous when i’m trying to deliver a car from my auto shop and we got cars that make the weirdest turn and ends up crashing into me

I think it's because many people saying "modders" talk about themselves and don't see them as "cheating". They're just having fun, relax bro, it's a sandbox, GIMME MONEY, etc. Probably just kids who wants to have one hour of fun in this cool city and that's it. In a way I can understand that. I'm not mad at them, I'm mad at the devs who thought P2P and basically no protection/action versus modders is fine in a multiplayer game. Plus everything is so damn expensive these days and plus a lot of missions are shared world experiences now that it's literally promoted to the rest of the lobby, "Hey guys, this nerd is doing this mission, everybody go fuck this guy's entire life up and you get a reward!" It's a bad game. And don't say anything about private lobbies, that's not the right answer to bad game design.

Another complaint. There's no weapon wheel when you're in a vehicle. So if you have 50 pistols SMGs, and throwables, you have to keep fucking tapping or scroll until you find the gun you want. And if you miss, you have to do it again.

Technically you can use the weapon storage addon that is available in bunkers or anywhere else to avoid cycling through every single weapon, but that will cost a lot. And it still won't hide some of the weapons. Like the 2 Revolvers for example

I tried getting back into GTA V Online in early 2023. I grabbed the criminal eneterprise starter pack, and got to work setting up and supplying my first 3 businesses. Enemy AI was already godly accurate and super spongy, so I found myself picking up armor and snacks like it was second nature. Cover is unviable when enemies spawn all around you. Death is very quick. Often unfair. Enemies will hide behind cover and blip on and off your radar. They only move when you do, creating some very annoying circumstances where you'll just have to grin and bear it. Then it hit me. The tedious supply missions. The fact that I was punished for not having access to certain vehicles or explosive weapons, causing jobs to fail. I started running businesses in invite only lobbies, where I could sell without griefers. The pay was bad. It hit me again. R* wants me to buy a buzzard and an armored vehicle with real money. I wasn't going to spend $100 just for a head start. So I continued. After a week, it felt like I was going nowhere. 3 businesses that I have to constantly resupply and pay upgrades for. Which I did. So I went online to do more deliveries. Because it pays more when you do deliveries online. As I go grab a van to resupply my business, I am harrassed. A guy on an Oppressor MK II would force me to stop my van and shoot him. He would just fly away and sit on a mountain, waiting for me to get back in my van. Which I did. Eventually he blew up my van. He didn't try to take the supplies. He just wanted to kill me with his flying death bike. Which he did. I ranted at him in the messages. Then I realized. If GTA V has flying bikes that can shoot rockets. What chance do I have without spending real money? So I deleted GTA from my console. I refuse to spend 8 real world hours a day trying to supply my businesses and deliver goods, just to make under 950k online. Me being new and low level. I felt bottlenecked. GTA V Online is a terrible mode. Created to sell Shark Cards. Players would rather harm than help, wasting your precious and sacred time. To no benefit of themselves. I will not suffer this kind of online mode. At this point I don't even want to think about GTA 6.

You two saying "its actually a you problem" or "skill issue" are the reason why Rockstar keeps putting all this anti-consumer, artificial difficulty, mindless non-gameplay segments in favor of microtransactions instead of actually making it a good, fun time to play. The more frustratingly annoying the game is the more people'll pay to "get better" and by getting better I dont mean actually getting more and more skilled at the game, rather just paying your way through having a fighting chance either through shark cards or mindless, boring grind as if it was a real life job. The reality of it is that you're not helping no one, the game objectively really is just that unfair and unbalanced and you shouldn't defend it. Just because your standards for what makes a game fun and balanced enough to even bother are low as hell doesn't mean nothing. I have first played the game back when it came out on the PS3, or you know back when it was actually freaking fair and fun. Now I'm lvl 200 on PC and its turned into one of the most annoying games i've ever had the displeasure of experiencing to the point in which I just stopped playing. Wish people'd just let this bed ridden cancer of a game die already.

18:29 What you describe here is exactly what the online of GTA IV was. In IV, you chose your game mode on your phone and were sent in a lobby for that specific mode. "Free mode" (open-world mode) was one of these modes, it was implemented equally as the other game modes such as deathmatch, race, police chase. It was just a game mode, not a central hub for other modes. And that's why there were no excessively long loadings in GTA IV online. Oh, and when you created a "free mode" room, you could choose a specific area for your free mode to be centered on. Be it airport, prison, Algonquin, docks, and so on. If you wanted the action to be focused on airport, you could. And guess what? I played GTA IV on PS3, the lobbies could only support 16 players, yet it felt like there were 100 times more players in these lobbies than in GTA V's open-world mode.

I liked the Mario party idea, it'd be cool adding onto that if a random heist at the end is picked and along the way you and a squad of four randoms have to do all the setups which are minigames that occur at certain points of the game, then at the end you play the heist with the same four people and the winner of the heist gets a huge bonus, and the winner is determined by whoever gets a combination of the most money and fastest time

The reason why you have to travel from point A to B all the time in these open world games is because the devs know that most players would leave vast portions of the map unused. In the case of GTA Online more specifically, this is also a means to incentivize the players to buy shark cards in order to buy properties closer to the city. I'm longing for the days with linear maps and when every triple A studios didn't all make open world games.

As a programmer, looking at how the menus are setup, its obvious nothing was ever planned. They planned and scheduled features, and when those weren't supported in the engine, they were added to a separate website, that is linked to the database that the game sees. Its like a kid with legos.... just keep adding, not taking in consideration what as been done before, and it becomes a mess really quickly. And while at the company I work, when we have ideas to optimize or improve the software, we meet and discuss, in Rockstar, I would have been fired, so that doesn't help either....

Programmer here too I’d say a better metaphor is making a tower out of random stuff you find. It will be ok for a lot of time, but at some point the tower built of random shit will lose its balance. The proper way to counteract it would be to start from scratch, using material from the tower but actually planning how to build it. Instead, rockstar just uses tape, which makes it not crash in on itself, but still terribly unstable. This would be a fine temporary fix while you change the tower around for it to become balanced and stable, instead, rockstar just kept adding more stuff and patching it to the old stuff with tape, it’s okay to bad for now, but at some point it will collapse in on itself

The more angry he gets the more i can relate to his anger and frustration, this game is so old you’d think all these day to day mechanics would be perfected at this point but you’d be wrong, to this day you’ll have to wait at least 6 months for one or 2 quality of life improvements, it took them 8 years to make the player press a single button to grab all snacks, it took them 7 years to add the ability to return the player’s vehicle back to storage, to this day getting session details don’t do shit and you’re 70% likely to fail to connect due to a simple issue that could’ve been detected by getting the session details. Here’s a funny and sad fact about connecting in this game to connect to a friend’s session he must be in the open world and not in any interior ( example: penthouse or casino or nightclub even the los santos customs )

Not true on Xbox . I have two consoles and one is always indoors to avoid being farmed and spam slots , if I notice a greifer I’ll join on my other console and pvp them while I continue gambling. I also recall being put in friends sessions and they are indoors , Some of the time . Although I noticed if they’re in a lobby for a game mode but still in the free roam session it’ll load you into their free roam session clouds and the say player no longer in session. Which is stupid that it loads a new random session because your friend ain’t there . Edit as you know I can’t play anymore gonna have to switch to pc

And there in lies the issue; Rockstar have a monopoly on this kind of game. If another software house produced something similar and GTA Online started losing players to it, Rockstar might suddenly be more willing to sort out major issues, more quickly. But, they don’t and that’s made them arrogant and complacent; assuming that players will always be there (and Shark Card buying ones, in particular)! The nearest to Online, there is, is FiveM; and I’d gladly play that, if RP servers were available that allowed you to do all the Online stuff, but without the crap that goes along with that; such as poor payouts and tedious sale missions.

GTA online back on 360 is so nostalgic, coming back from school and playing with friends, repeatedly doing Titan of a job and rooftop rumble, saving for the zentorno, the first couple of big updates were wild. When I figured how healing/armor works in GTAO I instantly decided that playing with 50% of your health is simply how this game is supposed to be played. Snacks and armor are piss cheap, the devs simply don't want you to be using them.

Snacks are free in your CEO office but I wouldn't say that armour (English spelling) is cheap. 500$ for Super Heavy which takes about 3 shots max. Fill up your reserves to the allowable 10 and that's 5K for something that is basically useless. I clipped a tree trunk once on a motorcycle and it took all my super armour bar away in one hit. I don't do pvp but for those who do I imagine it's not even worth bothering with. For 500$ a time Super Armour should be able to withstand more than 2/3 shots. It's actually a rip off like everything else in GTO.

24:00 This is HEIST ONLY problem, gta online has missions from Gerald, Martin, etc. They HAVE this system where if your team dies, and only YOU are left alive, you get to finish it, if teammate leaves, NOTHING instantly stops and fails you. R* DID IT ON PURPOSE AND PEOPLE STILL DEFEND THEM

They actually changed this with Cayo Perico, your teammates can die and you're still able to finish. This is balanced by each player having a limited amount of space for loot, so if people die, their value in loot is lost, and everybody involved makes less money than if everybody survived and had full bags. Also, if the player who died was carrying the main target, it has to be recovered before the heist can be completed. IDK if that carried through to the Autoshop mini-heists, I can't say that I've been bothered enough to play those with other players to find out.

Another point to note here is the clunky on foot movement in this game also starts to become a pain when you have to walk around a million small spaces and interact with specific things.

It's not all leadership's fault for the bad choices in the game, but it's also not all the devs fault either. I think it's very reasonable to say it's both sides of the coin. But if the game is rushed or there's only a skeleton crew to work on the game, it does affect quality. This should be a no-brainer. But to say it's all the devs fault simply cuz they're the ones implementing the stuff is just as stupid as saying it's all leadership's or Take Two's fault.

I agree. I feel he is being a little hard on the devs. They are probably expected to keep up engagement and spending with what is probably a fraction of the time and money they need to make something truly memorable.

@@Nicolisweetiepie Yeah. And since it's been a year or more since I wrote this, I've also learned a bit more, so I do believe my opinion changed a bit. I still think Viper was very harsh on the devs themselves but he has a point in all fairness. Let me explain. There are a couple of sayings that should illustrate things. If the Blind lead the Blind, both will fall into a Pit (a verse from the Bible) A captain sinks with his ship basically means the same thing. If you don't know, it basically means the captain has ultimate responsibility and if the ship and crew go down, he goes down with them and it's ultimately his fault. In both sayings, it's ultimately leadership's fault, but by the leader's mistakes/bad choices, the people beneath are just as faulty for following.

The whole concept of GTA missions are based on "artificial game lengthener", every mission you drive 80 miles to Paleto bay and back, and dodge cops, not to mention the unintuitive menu system. I agree with all of this, and playing this game for the last 8 years can relate to all these things. Like for example, setting aside the Trilogy remaster's issues, 1 feature they added was to disable the horrible feature for tapping to sprint, you can toggle that off and hold a button to sprint like PC, a feature still missing from GTA V.

What about the fqn cancer heist i just did. Serias a biker. Waited 15 min for match. 15 min!!! Then mission is drive 6 miles. Drove it. Random left game. Instead of continuing with 3 players i respawned 1 min in house :). 8 yers no one wants to increase heist money setup??? Im never playing this again. So weird they are. Bye rockstar u lost a customer. Not buying gta 6.

I have one problem with indie games, 90% of indie games are a unique art style either mid-evil or cyberpunk-ish game, though it helps creativity and i do understand that, it’s now the main thing about these titles, you simply can’t find an indie replacement for triple A titles like COD or GTA, Now i’m not saying indie games should be like triple A games but a small indie take on big games like these will attract players like myself who just can’t be bothered with learning new and unique game mechanics on every game i play, i know a friend who plays only one game and refuses to play any other games because he knows that game’s mechanics, i’m not saying getting creative is bad, it’s just maybe too creative sometimes, not all players like new games and new game mechanics, there’s a reason why COD sells every year, saying all that i do however appreciate indie development and support the indie industry when i can, and I’m trying to develop games myself but i’m so far from being a full fledged developer but i’ll keep working and improving myself, hope you guys do amazing games.

Man I haven't watched a single second of this video and I agree with this title. I have played years of online just to run into a glitch, poor balancing, and just over all anger. There should be 0 reason that the first heists to ever be released should still have glitches that they had, on release. Whether it be npcs not following, enemies firing at speeds that shouldn't be possible and two tapping you, rampant modders, and so on. Like I love what this could be doing heist with friends is great however if shit breaks while were doing it it is the most annoying lengthy process to start over for an elite challenge because an npc doesn't move or we get caught even if we are in disguise.

This summarized most of my issues as well with the game. The horrible loading screens for everything, the stupid snacks and armor system that I never even bother to use and the unbearable mod menus that plague the game is the main reason I stopped playing the game.
