GTO-VVVF: Taipei MRT C301 vs Toronto TTC T1

READ FIRST: Old clips taken in 2016. The (pre-refurbishment) Kawasaki/URC C301 & Bombardier T1 are two trains sharing a very similar propulsion sound. The C301s are built btn 1992-94, while T1s are built 1995-2001.
The original Westinghouse GTO-VVVF inverters of Taipei Metro's C301 fleet have since been entirely replaced by Bombardier's MITRAC IGBT-VVVF inverters in 2017. The T1s uses Adtranz AC traction. 北捷C301的GTO自2017年已全數更新為龐巴迪MITRAC IGBT-VVVF.

It was actually 2012 when C301 first received Bombardier Transportation's MITRAC TC1420 IGBT-VVVF inverters; this first happened on set 013/014 when it was rejoined.

Yeah, took a while to convert all of em. Now the C321s are getting their GTO replaced as well

@@LHProductionsofficial Yeah. But as of now the C321 and C341 *still have* their Siemens inverters; the bidders who would replace those inverters are currently in process of reviewing. No company has been chosen to supply the new ones yet.

@@TheSearleFamily123 Taiwan Rolling Stock Co. Ltd has been chosen a while ago. AFAIK the actual inverter will be Swiss-made. I’m assuming it’ll be similar to the ABB-made ones used for the Light rail rolling stock on the Danhai LRT

The C301s all got rebuilt with IGBT-VVVF propulsion as of last year, so that sound's gone now unfortunately.

Mycroft Kudo that's probably because of the amount of room the sound waves have since it's not on a subway system, it's pretty loud in Downtown Long Beach, Downtown LA and the underground stations.

North American trains tend to look old because they are usually unpainted. European and Asian railway companies usually like painted trains. I don’t really know the benefits of painting them though.

atom starfire productions True, I guess the designs also play a part. Metro Taipei does keep to the stainless steel surface for the most part tho. Paint is mostly for aesthetic purposes I guess.

adtranz was formely known as AEG-Westinghouse so they carried pretty much the same inverters althrough i think the T1 sounds a little bit different, i honestly think that the T1 will be the last train in the world to have this kind of inverter-traction motor

Tbh, TTC's T1 interior is outdated and should be updated if they're still gonna use it for Line 2 (Bloor Danforth Line/ Green)

@@exshinno its not the interior that needs to updated, the whole train is outdated, they cant possibly keep a old train running on the line, its not reliable, and wont fit the criteria of its future plans to revamp the system, they will just have to make minor updates to keep the t1s running for the next few years then retire it and replace it with something newer.

The propulsion system was developed by Westinghouse. Westinghouse sold the railway division to ADtranz and then Bombardier.
