Gran Turismo Sophy is Getting Smarter

GTPlanet chats with Sony AI researchers Kaushik Subramanian and Patrick MacAlpine about the latest developments of Gran Turismo Sophy. The latest version of the agent is able to handle tire wear, fuel consumption, and even allows the player to control it.

Sophie won't interest me until I can use it in custom races. Custom races were my biggest anticipated feature before launch and my biggest disappointment post launch 😕 because of the AI

Try racing cars from your garage, wear RH tyres the same as the AI and set boost to weak, I've managed to set up some great races doing this.

I think it would be cool if they made Sophy a spotter for VR players. To let us know who pits and our positions if we ask her.

I would love a Sophy drive instructor which would tell you where you are going wrong, I.E. braking too soon or too late, coring too soon or too late & so on. I have seen a program that does that which (if I recall correctly is GT7 compatible) but is like US$65 per month to use.

Oh Boy I am SO Looking Forward to this Update when it comes. I love B-Spec back in the day for doing the 24 hours races & I hope PD will get around to again giving us long endurance races (even if only campaign mode) with B-pec Sophy driver swap feature. PD also needs to roll her out to all tracks as she is a great teacher for new & mid standard drivers. Another feature I would dye for is Sophy AI to fill lobby races, someone wants to do a race series but only get 8 to 10 people apply but the host can fill the track to 16 to 20 with Sohpy AI cars

We need sophy harder races, in custom race, pitstops, event races and mission races with sophy this will revolutionize sim racing, not this b spec joke

I'm dumb. I just don't understand what B-Spec is. Why would you want to control Sophy if you are driving your own car? I get the idea of pre-programming behaviour, but beyond that ...

Because in B-Spec you aren’t driving your own car.

B-Spec was a mode in older Gran Turismo games where the AI did the racing and you gave it commands, like overtake, be more aggressive, less aggressive, and so on. It was surprisingly fun, even though it seems like it shouldn't be. Therefore you see many hoping to see B-Spec mode return.

@@PeterHas Thanks. So, I gather that if AI is doing all the racing, the preset AI is doing what you command, but is anyone doing any real driving? I still don't get it :-(

@ The way it worked in the older games is that B Spec was like a separate singleplayer campaign from the main game. So no humans were racing, only AI vs AI with the player hiring a driver, choosing their car, modifying it, and then giving commands during the race. Basically a racing manager game mode.

In the past we used b spec to run races while we were away. It was a way to farm credits and prizes without needing to control the car
