It's not often that I'm impacted too hard by the passing of a musician or "personality". Over the years, Freddie Mercury, Lemmy, Richard Wright, Rick Parfitt, Alan Lancaster are probably only a few who have had any real impact on me. Even the passing of Bowie and others, although noticed, have not had a big impact on me emotionally. I just learned today the Jeff Beck has passed after a short illness, and this has hit me out of the blue, and has totally knocked me for 6. In my view, he is without doubt the best guitarist I have ever heard or seen in my lifetime, and that list of guitarists I have seen includes Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, David Gilmore, Brian May, Joe Satriani, and so many more. He was instrumental in the direction than The Yardbirds took after Eric Clapton left, and that was crucial in the later Yardbirds style, then The New Yardbrds, and that became Led Zeppelin, which changed rock completely. Luckily, I got to see him a few years ago at Sydney Opera House. He had a way of making the hairs on your neck stand up and your whole body shiver with a single note. Check out his version of Over The Rainbow (either the album version from Emotion And Commotion, or many live versions including on Later With Jools Holland, or other live recordings on youtube), Goodbye Pork Pie Hat (which was already an elegy for Lester Young by Charles Mingus), Where Were You, Star Cycle, Drown In My Own Tears, Cause We've Ended As Lovers, Jerusalem, and so many many many other performances. The musicians who've been in his bands over the years is a who's who of music. I really couldn't do the list justice, but start off with The Yardbirds, Vinnie Colaiuta and Terry Bozzio (both drummers for Frank Zappa - you don't even get a call to an audition for Frank without being out of this world as a musician), Tal Wilkenfeld, Jason Rubello, Rod Stewart, Cozy Powell, Max Middleton, Simon Phillips, so many many others over a period of 60 years or more. His recording with his band at Ronnie Scott's truly is one of my favourite live recordings ever, and I will be watching it again tonight. I've genuinely watched it every few weeks ever since it was released. I'm truly heartbroken that Jeff has gone 🙁 Goodbye, Pork Pie Hat. Jeff Beck, RIP. 🙁

Haven't stopped listening to him since I heard the tragic news...an icon and I was lucky enough to have worked with him twice at Parkgatestudios( proprietor) in East Sussex. Setting up the mics in the main room whilst Jeff, Pino Palladino and Stewart Copeland were jamming was a privileged moment and is etched in my memory. My favourite guitarist of all time, his improvisation taking the guitar to places you never expected with such emotive tones that tore into your soul, growling like a tiger, heavy like a tank, delicate and sweet like a dove and crying like a baby. Never one for small talk, straight out of the car, into the studio and pick up the guitar...can't think of many musicians that can evoke such feelings. In bits this morning, writing whilst listening. A true great has gone and will be sorely missed.

Everything from tone, distortion, flashiness, monumental trademarks, signatory licks, outside combinations, variation on the theme, space futuristic prog rock, jazz, lyrical long lines and very memorable stuff, away from standard rock and roll variants typical approaches of playing, so sad he exited very early, May God give him peace amen.
