Absolutely love Grossman's teaching style. One of the great benefits to his style is that in his youth he learned several styles from the masters directly. If you need note by note direction buy some lessons from Stefan Grossman's Guitar Workshop library with the tablature notation book(s).

Stefan, you were the first decent/great blues guitar teacher I ever found on video and I loved them and learnt much and thanks for getting all those awesome teachers like Ari Eisinger (genius in my opinion

By teaching others their music lives on. They aren't robbing from the dead - they are keeping it alive.

Or you could just teach it proper and than anyone could learn it lol. I’m experienced enough to learn this but if I was starting out I would be annoyed, ppl like you and Stefan don’t share interest in trying to help anyone learn properly. Too lazy to break things down. Showing off ur skills and expecting people to just be able to do it is really something.

I bought the DVD that this is taken from and it is excellent, I find most teaching material a bit slow, but Stefan's lessons are spot on.

On the DVD does he actually explain what he does unlike his KZbin tutorials? I want to learn and tried his KZbin tutorial and is was terrible he barely explained anything. I don’t want to waste my money on his DVD does it walk you through note for note?

I like Stefan's singing. I read in a book once that he played in a rock band in San Francisco in the late 1960s. Maybe he dated Rory Block too. Is this true? I think the book was titled SUMMER OF LOVE. I used to try to learn from Stefan's OAK books, back before I had money to buy many records-- CDs and Videos hadn't been invented yet. It was slow going! Even so, many John Hurt riffs are imprinted in my mind--if not on all my playing skills yet! Getting the thumb/bass rhythm steady takes time.

As a devotee of Grossman for decades, I agree with the contributor who recommends leaning to sing the song first. That's the easy part. You have to concentrate on the instrumental part the most.

But ain't it wonderful that so many people are still alive and trying to play MJH, even though they will never completed get it. Maybe the next Stevie Ray.

I usually like the way Mr. Grossman play these kinds of fingerpicking songs. In particular, I like his slow blues songs, but the problem with his approach is that he just plays the songs and don't teach how the song should be played note by note and how the strings should be picked. I have not yet come across a video of Grossman here at KZbin where Mr. Grossman explains how he approaches his own fingerpicking method with regard to the beautiful slow blues music that he plays. His approach is always what he does here: "I am gonna play "My Creole Belle" real slow, and make sure you get it."

Blossom Russo Try focusing on the position of your elbow and wrist. It only takes a slight turn of the wrist or simply moving your elbow closer or farther from your body to give you a little more access, or a different attack at that fret board. I realize I'm commenting on a year old post, although I hope this helps.

This is pretty much how Stefan sings. He can put more into it, is enthusiastic and entertaining live but his voice he has apparently accepted as it is, which is how I would want it any way. Listen to the playing... I would suggest actually learning to sing these songs first which is backwards from Stefan but that's just me.. just enjoy and get immersed in the genre and guitar and singing in general and you can't go wrong.

bought this dvd and while it is good and well produced the music notation that goes with the tab is very confusing , its written very strangely - this makes the rhythm hard to make out , leaving you to get it by ear . While this might suit some people i like to have well written notation , this style is new to me , i really like it but having to almost guess the rhythm makes the dvd little bit disappointing

Sorry WTW, but it's still not MJH. The only song he actually wrote, well adapted., You are good, but MJH is always faster on the chord change and uptake on the upstrings than you will ever be. You know that. I am not a guitarist. I have played piano for 50 years. I can't ever play MJH the way he played it; and we know that Richards, Clapton, and Page can't do it either. No worries, He is the best Ever.

What happened to all the youtubes of John Hurt playing ? Elisabeth Cotten clips are gone too. Who thinks they own dead people music? I don't care what your beliefs are; robbing music from the dead can't be good for you.

Hi, I'm Stephen Grossman. Pretty much, I make shit up and market it to idiots. Turns out you don't need to be good to be successful.
