If you're interested in the tab/music for this KZbin lesson go to: www.guitarvideos.com/free-tab...
The key of E shouts out: “Play the blues.” It is the most popular setting for playing in the style of Lightnin’ Hopkins. Chicago bluesmen love playing in E. But there are other approaches of fingerpicking blues in the key of E. In this lesson, we explore styles and techniques as played by some of the legendary bluesmen: Charley Jordan, Big Joe Williams, Mance Lipscomb, Mississippi John Hurt, Big Bill Broonzy, Brownie McGhee, Rev. Gary Davis and of course Lightnin’ Hopkins.
Titles include: Baby, Please Don’t Go, Pigmeat Shuffle, Crow Jane, I Shall Not Be Moved, Careless Love, Hunkie Tunkie Blues, Keep It Clean and Texas Lightnin’ Blues
You can order the DVD or Download at: www.guitarvideos.com/#!/Finge...

I remember, a long time ago, when the name Stephan Grossman started appearing in the music press, whenever roots music was being discussed. Of course it was just called the blues in those days. He’s kind of the godfather of acoustic blues music; a generous spirited teacher who also has great shirts!

Fair enough, but as Mr G says, sometimes it's harder to play slowly and make it good ;) ... all about tone and nuance and left hand, not to mention history of a song like this... know much about Big Joe? The original recording had Joe on 9-string accompanied by a 1-string fiddle heheh ... the later very famous one had Sonny Boy Williamson (I) on mississippi saxophone, that recording was the foundation of the Bluebird Beat. Anyway, this is clearly a lesson about impro, and some good advice here.

lerch25 G and E chords work together because they share basically the same scale. In the case of this song, its not even really like a full G chord, its more of just a G note, which like I said, is in both the G and E scales. Its basically just a passing note, used to transition in to the A chord
@lerch25
@lerch25 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! That makes sense. He is just sort fattening up the g note.
@0Reilly08
@0Reilly08 6 жыл бұрын
It's a minor blues. E is the relative minor of G major. IOW in an E minor scale G is the third, the defining chord tone. Although, blues often incorporates both the minor third and the major third in the same riff. When playing slide or bending strings the note in between the two is called the blue note.

The original 1928 recording is somewhat crazy as it starts in the key of B and ends in the key of C but the guitar is tuned to any Open G. John must have used a capo and midway through his performance the lathe cutting the master sped up either by a voltage jump or by the engineer.
