Really liked this episode. As an oversea chinese born in Latam and with family from GZ, since my childhood I was constantly made fun of what "chinese", specially cantonese people, eat. I learned to embrace it and just tell them that they are just so soft and culturally never learned to survive under harsh conditions and make weird things to taste acceptable, even good. Glad to have this channel being so open minded and always presenting things in a respectful manner for people to learn.

Cantonese people not just try to name their food in a delicate way. They are naming the food so it indicates good fortune. like beef tongues "nou seed" it rhyme with the word business at loss, so they changed it to "nou lei" which rhyme with the word profit.

“Heat" in TCM is not literal heat. It's the status of your body when it's burning reserve energy. When your body burns its reserve energy, you get symptoms related to your immune system such as acne, bleeding nose, and not sleeping well among others. And the herb tea like any other Chinese medicine, does not work like a painkiller. It regulates your body's internal status so it takes a while for the effect to show. If it stops the pain immediately, question what's in it. The merchant may have smuggled in some painkiller pills in it. (It is not that it is known that some merchants do it; it is just that it is NOT supposed to be effective immediately like a painkiller. It's a regulation process and it can take several hours to a day for you to notice any difference.)

Peter speaks Cantonese natively but the issue is that sometimes you are not sure whether you can talk to people on the street in Guangzhou in Cantonese without any context, or you may come across someone from a non-Cantonese region who does not even understand what you're saying. That's why Peter usually start the conversation in Mandarin until he finds a trait in the other person's accent suggesting they are Cantonese speaker as well.

You eating the worms gives me a flashback to the Goosebumps episode where there were worms in the spaghetti. *shudders* I know I'm vegan, but I'll admit sometimes there are dishes you eat that I'm curious about... but not that one 😂😂😂

I finally learnt the Chinese word for "rươi" - a famous autumn delicacy in my hometown (Hanoi) - yes it is the 禾虫. Here we typically beat it up with some minced meat, egg and tangerine peels, fry them and voila you got a pancake that tastes like heaven. I LOVE IT, but given the high cholesterol I dont get to eat it often 😂 Also in my country 禾虫 is seasonal, they only show up around Oct-Nov each year. That means we only get to enjoy them in 2 months - is it the same in Guangdong?

It is. This worm is a highly seasonal dish and that’s why the price tag says “price of the day”
