Guapote (Wolf Cichlid) -- Creek Fishing, Costa Rica

*Edit: this is a wolf cichlid not a jaguar cichlid like I say in the video, after making it, my error was kindly pointed out.
I had some time by myself so I rode off into the sunset, cept it wasn't dark yet. I tried my hand at creek fishing for guapote and making a video at the same time. Hopefully you find this informative and beautiful and inspirational (may as well shoot for the stars).
My main gear was the Dock Demon Deluxe, a short pole that is highly flexible. Great to stick in your backpack, only sticks out a little.

Those are "Guapote Lagunero" or "Guapote azul" they are known as Rainbow Bass in English. Very aggressive fish. We catch them here in Costa Rica with all kind of top water lures, Crankbaits, spinners baits, the Rapala countdown it's really good too! Nice video amigo, Pura Vida!

Nice vid! For creeks like that check out Everett Lures! They have spinners, spoons, and all kinds of tackle! Some are for trout but will work for other species. Of course you can’t go wrong with all the sizes and options Mepps has!

Mepps Spinners are very useful here in streams like that one. Guapote or Rainbow Bass, the one you caught, attacks all kind of lures for north america Large-mouth bass. Try some top water lures and Crankbaits too. Pura vida!

Any bigger fish in there?

Yes there are, sadly many of these streams get overfished, but not with a pole, they'll come in at night with a spear gun and flashlight and slay them that way. Or they use a machete and flashlight... Both are not legal here. So once in awhile you will hook a larger fish, and it's definitely a treat.

The Costa Rica national record for rainbow bass it's about 15 pounds. They can grow big!

As a jaguar cichlid (parachromis managuensie, probably butchered the spelling) owner, I can say that most people who but them are ill-equipped to care for them. The males can reach 20 inches and both genders are extremely aggressive and fearless. They have a mouth full of sharp teeth and depending of the individual fishes personality will attempt to bite their owners and even jump out of the tank to do so.

They can attack and kill fish larger than themselves. Unless you have a 250 gallon, don't bother buying them. Also they can live 15-20 years given the right care
