As a zoomer I can confirm that young people still listen to albums in full (though playlists are arguably the most popular mode of listening now)

Gen Z-er here, and I absolutely cannot stand listening to an artist’s discography on shuffle. I have to listen to an album all the way through. It just makes sense. It’s a fully-formed creative statement. The songs go together.

As a gen z I can confirm but I myself prefer listening to albums opposed to playlist.

yeah it definitely varies from person to person - i often listen to a lot of albums in full (but also listen to individual songs, usually not if i want to hear the whole album first though) - i occasionally like making/adding to personal playlists (not on spotify, i don't use it) when inspiration strikes but that's about it (i kind of barely even listen to them, i just like to sort songs sometimes)

I am a teenager and I collect CDs all the time. I listen to them in the car when I'm driving and at home when im in bed, because its much easier to put on a cd than it is to mess around with a playlist on spotify or something. Because of this, i tend to collect cds that are nice to the ears or surreal for when I sleep. Another reason I collect cds are because of the artwork. I bought The Residents - In Between Dreams Live CD Longbox almost exclusively because it has such incredible artwork (seriously, look it up). It's nice to own a piece of physical artwork along with the album. All this, not to mention the fact that it helps support artists more directly than spotify listens, makes cds my favorite thing to collect.

I'm an old Gen X person (just 4 years shy of being a Boomer), & I loved using audio cassettes to tape songs off the radio. Instead of testing how fast I could hit record, I would often just record an hour of radio & then use my dual cassette stereo or boombox to edit out the good songs on to another tape. If the radio DJ talked over the start or end of the song too much I deemed it not worthy of saving yet. I'd wait for a better copy. I loved making mixtapes for friends & girls I liked. Oh, and the name of the Netflix mailing DVDs when they split if rom the streaming service was Qwikster.
@GarthMcMurray

Oh, and to share a CD story when things switched over to CDs my car still only had a cassette player so I had to get the cd player to cassette player converter (a plastic cassette shaped thing you put in the cassette player with a wire to your CD player). So I would play CDs in my Discman with a wire to my car stereo & the Discman of course would skip all the time whenever I hit any bump in the road. Very frustrating.

My iconic mislabeled song from Napster was "Final Fantasy X Main World Map Theme (Symphonic)" or something similar. I never played FFX, so for decades I just took it at face value. And I was obsessed with the song; it was one of the most beautiful pieces of music I'd ever heard. I gushed about it to my friends who also apparently did not realize it was not from Final Fantasy X. Eventually I began to suspect it had been mislabeled and it was not until just a couple years ago I finally figured out it was a symphonic version of Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven. This was a song that almost brought me to tears as a teenager, and I had no idea it was... Stairway. I mean, I knew *of* Stairway to Heaven, I'd seen Wayne's World and whatnot, but the two dots never connected in my head until then, and it left me feeling so... weird to learn the truth.

25 here. I regularly listen to and buy albums and did so even as a kid, heck, one of my christmas gifts from my teenage years was a CD player. I buy digital albums because they're very easily available, but my folks have an enormous collection of CDs, and I myself also buy CDs whenever possible because physical media is king and/or to get the good shit that can't be bought digitally easily. I have never used that Spotify doohickey in my life. I also torrent regularly and do not pay for any streaming service.

I'm 23 and I'd say Ming kinda hit the nail on the head about indie vs. big artists. I love BandCamp for Neil and Paul Baribeau and finding a random Chinese punk band, but most people I know stick to Spotify unless they're really into a more indie scene. I still feel like pirating and torrenting are important because otherwise art lives and dies on streaming platforms. The best way for me to watch Infinity Train or Close Enough is on my Plex server, because the platform they were made for unceremoniously deleted them to avoid paying royalties. I feel like we might be coming close to that early 2000s tipping point again, where corporations want one thing, consumers want another, and artists get kinda screwed no matter which way we go, but at the same time there's a lot of promise in how publicized the WGA strike and artists speaking up against AI-image scraping, etc. Idk, but I like when the Internet was a bit weirder and less centralized, and I hope we get some of that back eventually.

me and my family where all behind the times with american technnology and stuff due to us being in mexico, so i was just a kid still ripping CDs before i went and bought any (and im only 18! now), i have a very distinct memory of going down to a cd shop with my dad, looking at albums and writting down the names of songs we liked on them then heading home and searching for them to burn into our own cds. we still have the repurposed photo album that's just filled with burned cds.

I'm not going to take offense to being called a child for enjoying Lemon Demon. Children who enjoy Lemon Demon are probably going to turn out alright compared to those who enjoy Tik Tok. Not that they're mutually exclusive but I think the ones who at least put time into listening to Lemon Demon will have a leg up over others.

Oh man the mention of mustard plug just reminds me of how much I dislike mustard plug. As a fan of ska in general I heard Mr. Smiley and quite enjoyed it and decided to just add a bunch of their songs to my playlist. Eventually I realized that I really didn't enjoy any of their songs. Mr. Smiley stayed on my playlist a bit longer for nostalgia's sake because it was a friend who had discovered and introduced it to me but I'd probably have to listen again to say exactly what it is that made me dislike them. I think part of it was just a lack of "heart," so to speak. Like Mr. Smiley - song is completely fabricated. I think it's one of their better songs because even if the story is made up it sort of gives the impression that it's based on a real situation but after I started to sour on Mustard Plug as a whole I also began to notice some chinks in that armor and feel the aforementioned lack of heart. Which is sort of a weird thing to criticize I guess since Neil revealed in his Spirit Phone commentary that there's not necessarily a deeper meaning to Spiral of Ants. He didn't intend for it to be like a social commentary or anything like that. That wasn't part of the heart he put into the music. The thing is I think there's heart in Neil's music anyway. He's really passionate about creating music that sounds good. Deeper meaning might not be intentional but it sort of ends up being there anyway just out of sheer goodness. I should stop typing because I'm clearly not a good critic by any stretch of the imagination.
