Sis met one. Owner hears the donkey screaming, comes out to see the mosquito control truck, my sis in the road, trying to explain to this screaming donkey what she’s doing, and why she needs to come through (this is a woman who talks to a wild osprey about nests and chicks and trainees) After calming the donkey, and getting them properly introduced, sis was able to do her job. The donkey follows her like a shadow. He loves forehead scratches and hugs. But he HAS killed a couple of coyotes, so…

Indeed my neighbours' donkey is also a quality guard donkey except it has a really brash and playful nature but it's bold and impressive for it took down coyotes and even fended off pumas, wild or feral dogs, wolf packs and etc, black bears even, protecting the livestock. I saw this guard donkey in Tijuana once. The way he looked these young ladies in their eyes, and watched them in such a loving embrace, almost brought a tear to my eye. I had no idea that such a bond could exist between ‘man’ and beast! I love donkeys, they are so smart. Our pregnant mare foaled on New Year's Day of 2000. It was late evening and I heard both of our donkeys putting out a distress scream so I went out to check and there was our new foal, not even out of the birthing sack and coyotes had surrounded the Corral. Our donkeys, Daisy and Dusty, stood guard, each on an opposite side of the mother pointing outward towards where the coyotes were to make sure that the mom was safe while she was cleaning her baby up. It was an amazing experience. What a lot of people don't know is that donkeys hate anything that's a canine, so even your dog would be attacked if it was not introduced to the donkey, so they knew it was family. They're Fearless they will go after the wolf, coyotes, and even chase the javelinas. That was many years ago, and unfortunately, they've both crossed the rainbow bridge, but they're still alive in our hearts. The foal is now 23 years old, living its best life with a woman who used to ride him at the facility we moved him to. We get a Christmas card every year from them.

Donkeys are pretty common guard animals for herds. Llamas too, but with llamas you cannot have more than one per herd or the llamas will pair off and not integrate into the herd. Texas A&M is/was doing a massive study on the efficacy of Llamas as guard animals and from my recollection herds with llamas saw a ~10% increase in livestock survival.

That's just really cool. I've heard before that you can use donkeys to guard small livestock. But to actually see the donkey in action is a really cool experience. It's awesome how intelligent animals truly are. Especially when many species of animals were considered to be emotionless and only capable of instinctive behavior, without any real problem solving or thought processing power, maybe 40+ yrs ago. Actually animals are creatures, that were created by God. They don't need humans to protect them from other animals... *They may indeed need protection from humans.* By the way, some animals are absolutely horrific and just cruel as hell. I love cats, and I've had about 6 or so in my life. *Every single one was incredibly cruel and perhaps sadistic is an appropriate word to describe them. My current cat, is about 18-20 pounds and is the sweetest thing ever when he's laying on my lap. Yet, every time he catches a mouse or any small creature? He becomes a totally different being. He'll pounce on the poor thing, injuring it enough to make it much more easy to catch over and over again. Yet, he'll intentionally hold back just enough to prolong the absolute agony that the animal experiences. He's even slept near the suffering mouse until it becomes brave enough to try to escape once again, and WACK!! He smashes his prey down again and starts the process all over again.* They're far from nice, kind, considerate, compassionate, or empathetic. In fact I would posit that he is actually just the opposite of those. he is calculating, cunning, cruel, and a cold killer of the adorable things. I still love him dearly. For he is just being what he was designed to be. A regulator of overpopulation of small mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, or just about anything about half his size or smaller. Cats are one of the most prolific killers in the world, with about 130 known prey that they will seek out, stalk, ambush and kill. Most other predators are known to have about 3-5 different animals that they will actively hunt and kill. That's why some people will poison them, or shoot them. Like those who love songbirds. Cats can decimate the songbird population very quickly. *That's why people must get their cat spayed or neutered!* They are really nature's perfect sociopaths. 😎🇺🇸

I couldn't agree more. What precious souls these little animals are. I wish animals lived better lives like they deserve. Wish humans had more humanity, too...empathy.

Thats because old men teach their grandkuds that animals have no souls, no emotions, no conscience, and cant feel pain.
