That was one stubborn racoon. The dogs held him back. He could have gotten your chickens, for sure. Hopefully he'll think twice before choosing your place again. Your dogs showed great restraint. Protectors of the realm.

I'm really proud that they didn't pull the raccoon down. But I don't think he was stubborn, just smart to not come to the ground. I think he was very scared and chose to not move and not come down until it was safe to come down.

@@BigHornMountainAlpacas he was definitely scared and so cute when he tucked his head in at the beginning. I was surprised he kept coming back up, but maybe he thought they could get him on the ground regardless of the fencing.
@BigHornMountainAlpacas2 жыл бұрын
@@mjo1016 Racoons know to run up, usually a tree but since we didn't have trees, fence posts were the closest thing to a tree. I don't think he fully understood the fence and that he could have run away on the other side of the fence. I agree, he sure was cute and I felt bad for him when he tucked his head down and almost covered his eyes. But he was smart to do that because if he started growling or hissing, The Guardians would have been more aggressive. They could have easily reached and pulled him down. I think they were in between does he need help or is he a threat.

Live and let live! What a great demonstration of understanding each species instincts and working with fight, flight, freeze and flock to best advantage for of the whole ecosystem. That raccoon will be prey for the bigger predators and keep them away from the poultry for at least one meal. Raccoon did not get a taste of chicken, dogs did not get a taste of raccoon and the guardians got positive reinforcement for both instinct and obedience.

Everyone went home without injuries. That’s how I also like it. As far as shooting the animal, you needed the dogs out of harms way before you even think about shooting. Same goes with the livestock. Barking is the best deterrent. I don’t think raccoon will be back.

And this is exactly why when I see my dogs chasing something I take my quad and my .223. If the quad engine revving up doesn't end up scaring that raccoon into jumping down and running off, 62 grains of lead ends the standoff in a hurry. And then I don't need to chase the damn thing all down the fence line.

@@BigHornMountainAlpacas I guarantee not only that he's been back, but that he brought friends with him. That's just how they work. Maybe they figured out that there wasn't a safe way past the dogs and a meal was just too risky, but you definitely spent some time under scrutiny for a raccoon heist. Your farm, your rules, and I respect that, but around here(we're too far west for raccoons to be a thing these days), we would have pulped that thing with a bullet to guarantee it never showed up again.

Only people who have experienced it will know that the coon wasn’t scared, but hungry and will be back. We’ve lost 16 chickens in the last 3 years and now got 2 Pyrenees. This women knows nothing. At least you have some logical and rational survival thinking.
