Amaryllis would've made an interesting lead. A rich witch from a not so nice place having to settle with dealing with people that are "beneath" her. Finding out her friend is in crisis over something not easily solved. A rival aka Sage that believes her method of magic isn't obsolete despite everyone saying it is and taking out her anger on Amaryllis who just wants her to face the facts... This is why I like the concept of Artemis Fowl. Seriously she gets most of the notable moments in the show for better or worse. It's like there was one good writer that saved most of it for her. I believe her friendship with Snap WAY more than Rosemary and Sage.

I imagined a scene where Thyme was arguing with her mom and Parsley jumps up, grabs both of them by the ear, and drags them over to a corner to sit and stare until they're ready to act like adults. The whole thing would end with a punchline of Thyme's mother asking how a child put her in time-out. Not to mention that her transformation from antagonistic bully to unlikely friend/enemy is one of the few well-paced gradual character growth in the entire series. I genuinely find it really cute how she forms friendships with other characters, while still being in character. When she finds out she might have a friend who she can gossip and sass other characters with in Thyme, she follows her around and sticks to her like glue. Her interactions with Parsley show how she can put Amaryllis in her place. And in the Halloween episodes, she genuinely asks Sage how they haven't met before, as if they were both from Witch Country they could have grown up together. Note that this is one of the few times where a character is prompted to give their backstory in a natural and meaningful way, and actually functions to enhance their character in the process. What makes Amaryllis a good character isn't just in how she acts, but in how she gets the others to *react*. Otherwise you just know that they would spend the entire series in their stock, fixed-expression, faces. 😀😃🙂😒 Guess who's who in this lineup.

Surprisingly enough, the tea scene in episode 2 was what made me like Amaryllis. That scene and the way she was portrayed as a high school bully were so ridiculously stereotypical it was hilarious and just made her an instant favorite. And I love her friendship with Snapdragon, her going out of her way to make sure Snap is comfortable and has space to talk. Heck, at the end of episode 9 she even respected Snap's wishes to be alone with Sage. And it's not like the show focused too much on that friendship, I don't get why they couldn't put the same effort in establishing the friendship between Rose and Sage beyond just telling us that they are best friends.
@Rar830
@Rar830 Жыл бұрын
Same, before then she seemed like a terrible person, but the tea scene was what convinced me thats she not. As she comes across a comically incompetent recurring villain in the same vein as team rocket, but worse since she actively tries to do something bad yet it results in something purely good. She failed successfully in other words and throughout the show she never actually does anything actually bad to my knowledge and is constantly talking as if she were. I say this because anytume she screws something up its an "oh crap" moment, not on purpose. Meanwhile stuff like her shooting lasers at everybody or being psychotic is always framed in sucha way that its clearly not meant to be taken seriously. Her friendship with Snapdragon only further convinced me that she is in fact a genuinely good person, just simply misguided. Potentially as a result of her upbringing, since in all likelihood the rest of her family acts the same way so it would only make sense that she would become like this.

Good rule of thumb for writers: If a scene won't work because of how you characterized your characters, either spend more time to develop the characters personalities to the point where the scene will make sense, or just scrap the scene and write one that actually works. Didn't think I'd ever have to explain that to people who got paid to write stuff, but I guess this is where we are in the entertainment industry dumps.

I just realized today how to make Sage's "Old Magic, New Magic" issue make sense. Throw out the conservative/liberal thing they had going on, and focus on a very simple dichotomy: technology and self-reliance. Let's say that the reason her mother wanted her to focus on the old style was that it focused on knowing and understanding every part of the process, from the nature of substances, items, and creatures involved to every step of every ritual. By contrast, the terraspere technology allows everyone to do everything faster, since it (for lack of a better words) automates the process with the alignment of substances and steps of the rituals artificially done by or within the sphere itself. It's handy, but the cost is that fewer people today are learning how all of this works, and as Sage and/or her mother could point out, this makes them dependent on whoever is making and maintaining these things. It seems fine for now, but if we do what GHQ here has done with making the bad guys said producers... It also gives them a perfect motivation for either causing or at least allowing the rot: they can use that as an incentive to make even those who try to cling to the old ways adapt their technology in order to fight it while they hold a monopoly, giving them ever more money, power, and influence in a long-running plan to control the world not through conquest, but by control of the very materials that make everything function.

This. A thousand times, this. I had a similar idea to rewriting and balancing Old and New magic, but your idea is much more well thought out. For one, it's refreshing to see someone whose idea for balancing Old/New magic isn't just "MaKe OlD mAgIc StRoNgEr!1!". For another, this would provide a downside to New Magic besides the connection to the Rot. Because New Magic is so easy to use, it's an easy draw for... unwieldy sorts. Maybe those easily drawn by promise of power, or those out for revenge, or some third vice to indulge. While the path of Old Magic, due to requiring dedication and discipline to master, weeds out any such sorts and mostly leaves those who would use its power responsibly. But also, this would actually provide an incentive to combine Old and New magic, in a sense: the power and speed of New Magic, in the hands of the creativity, knowledge, skill, and discipline of an Old Magic user... quite the powerful combination.
@morgant.dulaman8733
@morgant.dulaman8733 Жыл бұрын
@@insulttothehumanrace3807 Thanks. Also, your mention of incentives gave me another idea, one that could use this aspect to create a source of conflict between Sage and the others, as well as create an opportunity for rather interesting growth on Rosemary's part. Now some have questioned why you would even have melee warriors or archers in a world where magic can do everything. If we go with the technology route, then it starts to make sense: up to this point, the rituals involved in old magic took time, time enough to draw an arrow or close the distance for a sword, axe, or hammer. Now that it's gotten much faster through automation, this is having an effect similar to the gun had on sword fighting. How would Rose, Thyme, and Parsley be forced to grow or change their style and thinking if they got to the academy after training in a very specific style for most of their lives...only to find their simply outdated? How might that create a source of envy towards the magic users, especially Sage once she gets a terrasphere of her own, and it drives home even further how their styles can't keep up anymore? If I were writing it, I'd have each adapt in their own pace and their own way. Parsley could try using armor and adapting runes to guard against certain attacks. Thyme could hone her skills at stealth and gradually learn new specialties to augment her arrows (ex. explosives, freezing, tranquilizer darts etc.). As for Rosemary, she could try at first to just plow forward and fight her enemies as if it was still her mother's day, only to get put on her rear a couple of times and forced to admit she needs to change. Now how she would adapt is still a matter for speculation, but at least we now have an arc that gives her some progression, character development, and something I can imagine many would sympathize with beyond her mother having Protagonist's Parent Syndrome.

Great idea! I had an alternative one, but maybe possible to connect: that old magic used on small scale is just a bit draining, but on a larger scale (let's say... Big, loud city scale) it eventually requires human sacrifices to meet the demand - life energy of the casters themselves just isn't enough. That for long, gruesome years of growing magical demand Triumvirate secretly sacrificed prisoners and homeless people, eventually even orphans, so the city would thrive. That they were desperate to find an alternative, whatever it would be, and when the terraspere was invented, they didn't care it drains the planet instead - it is the lesser evil, isn't it? They decided to replace all of city magic with terraspheres asap. To do this they had to convince people to rapid change. But not wanting to admit their former crimes they instead created an entire smear campaign for old magic, shaming people for using this lame, obsolete technique, simultaneously heavily marketing terraspheres as the must have. I think it would add the dimension to Triumvirate making them not just the evil greedy Corporation, and also kinda explain how the hell Rosemary's mother joined them.

@@morgant.dulaman8733 great idea, it also gives better reason for conflict between Rosemary and Sage than difference in fair activity preferences. Amaryllis is the best character for the specific reason that she was written to be the exact opposite. she is clearly meant to be the unlikeable character who's constantly present to give us moral contrast to our "heroes" with her rude attitude. however in reality it just makes all of her shenanigans and ensuring royal hijinks more enjoyable the more we come to detest everyone else. but thats completely attributed to the fact that she wasnt stuck up the ass with all the socio-political tropes which plague pretty much every other character for the sole reason shes supposed to be a minor antagonist. i wouldnt say its an oversight but it unironically makes Amaryllis the only damn consistently written character in the entire show because they left her alone. not to mention that despite being a psychopathic bully, shes the only character who exhibits any natural flaws as we learn her bad nature is a direct correlation to her own insecurities. like yeah, shes not a great person by how she treats most around her, but she shows to be the most relatable because she has the most realistic sense of humanity and isnt just some 1-dimensional self projection.

I think a major factor with Amaryllis' likeability is the fact that her character flaws are *intentional*, which makes her more believable and consistent, and this allows her to develop as a character. Meanwhile the main 4 just sorta switch personalities to suit what the show wants at the drop of a hat, which is a huge factor in why they feel so lousy and sometimes out of character.

This also ties into how people will tend to enjoy villains despite how evil they may act. Amaryllis is actually the balance of this worlds universe, a good to balance the bad
@veritasgaming2861
@veritasgaming2861 Жыл бұрын
One of the notable things that occurred to me in your comparison of the Parsley incident versus the Snapdragon one is the fact that, on some level, the show's bizarre narrative inconsistency may not be just incompetence, but a combination of incompetence as well as a failure to actually understand the ideological beliefs they suppose themselves to advocate for. For context (though this is obvious), this can be derived from how oppositely the narrative treats the punishment of what in reality are characters that serve the same function (Cal and Aster). In the case of Parsley, the violent punishment of Aster is deemed moral and praiseworthy ostensibly because Aster deserves it. However, as noted, this reasoning narratively vanishes the moment Snapdragon does the same thing. Now obviously this is curious, not just because of inconsistency however, but because of the very bizarre double standard it establishes. On one hand, Carroway's spiel afterward about the immorality and harm of Snapdragon's actions is evidently predicated on being a narrative PSA about toxic masculinity--something that would be perfectly fine and relevant if the world of HGS operated according to its own moral standards at all times, which it of course doesn't. In the case of Parsley, there is no punishment, not even a heavy-handed attempt at a spiel along the lines of "I dunno, maybe there is a better solution, you should have told us first, or maybe, hah, we can try to do our jobs better." Instead, Parsley and the others get narratively high-fived for Girlbossing the worthless characters whose sole reason for existing in the story is to have their teeth kicked in, being the moral effigies they are. So, tdlr, in HGS it is perfectly moral and stylish to kick the oppressor in the guts if you're of the female sex, while suddenly it's toxically masculine if you're male. This is getting a little greedy, but this is made especially weirder given the fact that Snapdragon actually experiences dysphoria and, to my knowledge, is meant to settle on identifying as female by the end of the season. Combined with the fact that Snapdragon attacks Cal exactly because he was being made fun of on the basis of femininity, I'd say there are more than a few ways you could frame HGS as having an anti-trans narrative... of which the irony (Raye Rodriguez being trans) is both unbelievable and exactly the problem. All in all, I'm not sure whether or not HGS is simply more incompetent in a general sense or if this incompetence just happens to be grotesquely intertwined with how garbage its execution of its imaginary progressivism really is. Partially it felt like there was an honest attempt here or there to fit a coherent narrative, however, for the most part the show seems unable to decide whether or not it cares more about dunking on representations of people its creators hate or actually trying to critique how we morally deal with people of that nature on a productive basis.

While I didn't really care for Amyrillis herself, she was the subject of the only joke in HGS that I actually laughed at (roughly quoted because I'm not watching that crap again just to make a point): Sage: "Well what if Amyrillis went on and on and on about how dreamy Aster is all the time?" Snapdragon: "I'd be happy for her! She _usually_ talks about murder." I find that what makes a lot of jokes funny has to do with when the punchline lands. The later the landing, the funnier the joke because you have less time to process the information, consider it rationally, and maybe even write a funnier joke in your head. (This is the essence of what makes farts funny. Despite crass witlessness, they're so fast that they can catch even the most cynical viewer off guard.) Up until the last part of the exchange, the conversation sounds fairly pedestrian, as if real people were talking about another real person. For the joke to end in "murder" jars the viewer from a typical breeze-shooting session to "oh yeah, we're talking about a complete psycho here". And because we've gotten to know Amyrillis, more so than most other characters in fact, we can imagine that this is true to at least some degree. This wouldn't work for, say, Thyme. The fact that Snap just says that so nonchalantly suggests that he doesn't even regard it as weird, let alone contemptible. It's just something he's come to accept. Because of that, your mind fills in a million different interactions between the two that would leave Snapdragon so jaded about Amyrillis' violent streak. That's what makes it funny. It's one of the only times where HGS allows itself to be a silly cartoon, and just about the only one of those to not be completely tonally compromised. ...That said, given Snap's ultimate characterization as disliking aggressive and macho qualities... why _is_ he friends with Amyrillis? Isn't the whole point of the axe that it symbolized machismo and showed how Snap regarded becoming just like his dad as an unpleasant inevitability? Why be friends with someone who met receiving the axe with "I... FEEL... ALIIIIIVE"? Or does Snap just hate aggression when _men_ do it? Speaking of men, what does Snap think of Carroway? Real-life LGBT subgroups are notoriously prickly and gatekeep-y against each other, as you'd expect when questions about who counts as what are left purposefully ambiguous. Would Snap think _less_ of Carroway knowing that Carroway explicitly rejected the kind of beauty Snap wants? Or would Snap think of Carroway as a man, and thus a brute like Snap's dad? Or maybe the writers were just stupid, stupid motherfu-

I would assume it's because Amaryllis is so gentle with Snapdragon. He sees a side of her that nobody else gets to, so he knows that there's more to her than just violence and aggression. She has a soft side that he can open up to.

@@yoseisovereign6728 In my experience, people in Snapdragon's situation not only don't want to be reminded of the abusive home they left (even if the most abusive thing Snap's dad did was send him to HG Academy to die...), but they're hypersensitive to anything that would remind them of that abuse. Which, in Snap's case, should include Amyrillis. Weirdly enough, Thyme actually demonstrated this _properly_ when she bumped into that tree cosplayer and had a PTSD episode over it.
@insulttothehumanrace3807
@insulttothehumanrace3807 Жыл бұрын
@@draketheduelist Undermined by Thyme having more of a reaction to that one tree cosplayer than to seeing actual Rot in effect, but a fair point nonetheless. And I could kinda see Snapdragon just not liking the aggression and toughness in men. One of the things that attracted Snappy to Sage was her lecturing/yelling at Amaryllis; and when I first saw Snappy's talk with Caraway I interpreted it as Snappy partly being jealous of how women can be both beautiful and strong, tough or gentle as needed... while men can only be big and macho or else be looked down upon. Maybe (and I know I'm injecting my own nonsense in at this point) he's okay with Amaryllis getting the axe as it both symbolizes him distancing from his family's expectations and makes him a little happy knowing that the axe is going to someone who's actually comfortable with it. But back to the joke, another part of it that works well is -- whether intended or not -- good use of expectation subversion, as sick as some of us probably are of hearing that. Sage asks a loaded question to Snappy, about how he would feel if Amaryllis got a crush/boyfriend and that's all she talked about. Expectation: he ponders the question, really thinking about how he would take it, maybe even begins to understand how Sage is feeling and sympathize. That or go into denial. Subversion: his answer is quick, confident, and a little odd. He's not taking any of Sage's attitude.

In the final episode where the students and unconscious teachers were trapped in a burning basement and her first reaction is find a way out by working together. Rosemary doesn’t do that and she’s supposedly a leader and MC, however, the first instinct she got from that is play truth or dare while trapped in a cave. Way a go, guys. 👍😒👍

And honestly I just wish they would let characters be feminine without them being trans. Obviously Snap dragon was meant to be trans from the beginning and that’s not the problem I have with the character. I just really wish they wrote that character better and not so god awful. Oh your a feminine male? You MUST BE TRANS! It felt forced and I just think that it’s way more complicated than that and the writing for that character was not carefully thought out at all!

Never saw anyone bring this up, but earlier seasons of Winx Club featured a secondary "mean girl" character named Amaryl, who was technically on the good side in the larger conflict, but still sociopathic enough to attempt throwing a fireball (of the type implied to be a lethal weapon) at a fellow student for a petty reason. So, apparently, the most well-received HGS character may not necessarily be an entirely original invention...

It's just that I'm a shy introvert girl just like her (even though I wouldn't start a fight with my best friend for such a stupid reason) I guess it says a lot about this show cause I'm probably the biggest Sage fan here and even I can't defend her with much other than "I couldn't hate her because I feel empathetic towards her" I'm just too emotional and the shot at 2:24 alone makes it impossible for me to hate her
