I made one of these cooler shelters for a stray neighborhood cat. A lot of times you can just find a free cooler out in the trash if you are ok with comet cleaning it. The coleman I got was a pull around type so the wheels and handle needed to be removed. Because of the odd shape, the lid became the floor. A lot of these coolers also have textured lids on the inside which are not flat. I made it flat with a laid piece of insulated foam board then added a layer of reflective car sun shield on top. Then a blanket. That’s more insulation than in most homes. Finally added around 25 watts of 1/4 watt Christmas lights mounted in the ceiling in front of another piece of reflective car sun shield. The floor is so well insulated with lid, foam board, reflector, blanket that no heat matt is needed. The cat will heat the floor, the lights in the ceiling will heat the floor and the cat. If you use bulbs for heat, just make sure they are very low wattage bulbs, otherwise they pose a fire hazard. Don’t stick a 30 watt bulb in there! You have to spread the heat source out so the bulbs can not burn.

I invested 3 coolers for outdoor cat shelters. The ferals love them & use it every night. I was very surprised how warm they are. Definitely better then the other options & it’s much easier to clean & maintain as well.

My semi feral prefers to have a secondary exit in the tote version that I made, but at least it's being used. I also have a heated cat house (that is kept in a covered area), a small Igloo type dog house filled with insulation and straw (never hay); and an unused plastic child's playhouse/climbing thing (that used to have a small slide) covered and insulated with sheets of insulation and more straw. And I only have one outside cat! Also, for these cooler cat houses - keep your eyes out during trash days, yard sales, etc. You can get free coolers that people just don't want anymore for free/cheap that way.

Brilliant idea...Our feral cats seem wary of anything that doesn't have a way out as well as in but using a bit of carpet (or something similar to windproof the entrance/exit I think I can make a few of these before it gets too cold...of course London is never as cold as Scotland but I still think they need shelters.

I was going to say that they need camouflage because not everyone loves them like me. I think I can get coolers cheap too and put a few in the garden in hidden places where the cats go for shelter anyway...Thank you x

I bought a cooler on Amazon for $25 for the biggest size you have there. I will make it a shelter. Thank you!

Wonderful. Why do you need drain holes in the cooler?

How do you get a feral cat to use it? He stays on our porch at night but seems to not trust anything.

Scott1Lori2 put a little food in it?

I'm going to keep trying. TG turkey is gone but maybe with Christmas turkey. I made it a cooler box with a pet heater inside but it just lays on our padded porch chairs. Hate to see it out in 22deg temps. Seems fine but I was hoping to make it much more comfortable.

Scott1Lori2 most ferals/stray won’t use a shelter w/o 2 entrances. They need a escape door in case of unwanted visitors. I use a xl cooler & the feral cats take turn using it. I fill it with straw, they love it & use it every night. They prefer an escape door since they are skittish, hate to feel trapped.

@@sammysworld5485 I have an XL cooler and am thinking of doing the same. So one door is 2-way, and then there's one that is exit-only? And straw is all you put inside? Thanks
