Guardians of the Galaxy Critique | Rock 'n' Rollercoaster

Eidos's Guardians of the Galaxy are my favourite guardians. The galaxy they con their way through is packed with heart and earnestness that makes something as simple as eavesdropping on a conversation between Rocket and Drax the highlight of a play session. The world-building, the aesthetic, the tone, couldn’t be more in-keeping with the vibe of this ramshackle group of lovable criminals.
But it’s far from perfect.
In fact I’d argue that Guardians of the Galaxy is a good game with great writing.

I found myself enjoying the combat more as it went along. Strangely enough though, the writing, characters, aesthetic and even World design exploration and combat mix felt like I got the best Mass Effect type game in a decade. Even down to the neat little choices that was all about affecting the climax. I was not expecting a Guardians game to make me cry twice but here we are. Honestly it's so good that I might struggle going back to the films. And I like those a lot

You had people like "Worth a Buy" panning this game for the shallow, repetitive, simplistic combat, exploration, and puzzles, and I'm like "....what were you expecting from a GOTG game?". I was expecting a bubblegum space opera with great characters, snappy dialogue, and stunning vistas. The game delivered on all that and then some. I actually think the game does the IP more justice than the movies.

Sometimes I just want to play a game that gives me joy to play, that's not overly complicated with skill trees and upgrade mechanics, that has bosses that don't make me tear my hair out, and is just plain kid-level fun. I slept on GotG after snagging it in a sale a year ago and finally booted it up last month. It surprised me with how downright entertaining it was. I played it, replayed it, went back and cleaned up cheevos until I got the plat and it's on my list now for further replays when I want to play something fun and revisit old buddies.

I always felt like post-movies Guardians media in general had been shallow but could never explain exactly why, and you put it in better words than I ever could less than 4 minutes into the video. Your critique was wonderful to watch amidst a plethora of basic 10-minute reviews that all say the same stuff. You clearly know what you're talking about, what with the references/comparisons to the movies and comics as well as the individuals behind the game, but most importantly you never settle for saying "X is good, Y is bad" without going in-depth on the reasons why. This game deserves more than generic reviews, and yours was fantastic. Cheers!

You mentioned missing collectables, just wanted to let you know that you can replay previous chapters. The game won't let you change story decisions inside the same playthrough, but you can go back and find any collectables and whatnot that you may have missed.

God this game deserved more attention. I hope they get to make a sequel. Edit: also super disagree on the ending. Played on hard and felt that the fight with Rykard was the perfect level of difficulty for the end. Then the secret boss fight was the power fantasy victory lap that put a cherry on top of a perfect game. It also allows one last comedic romp with the Guardians before the closing credits.

I kinda agree, I mean it wasn't a good fight but Monty was a bit harsh on it IMO. Plus if we think about it, if that fight didn't happen then our final boss would've been and old grieving father who was warped and controlled by a monster and not the monster itself.

I know it’s probably too late for this comment to be heard but while going through the combat section, an idea struck me that once you build your style meter up to a certain point, then you switch over to another guardian and it lasts as long as you can keep the style meter high that way you can play as the other guardians but you’ll always fall back into star lord’s shoes for plot moments

I found the secret to finishing this game and still loving it even after the final Magus boss fight: Settings: enable auto win QTE events. The game is everything this review says. A fun space adventure, a really great single player team play game! By the end, I had figured out how to combine all the team members’ combat abilities for a pretty effective fighting style that got my Guardians through the last few chapters. But none of that mattered at the end when I had to press random buttons at just the right timing to pass the magic stone between team members. I must have seen Nikki drop that stone while Final Countdown played for an hour… maybe more than 50 times. I was ready to give up but I kept searching for some clue as to how exactly to press buttons at just the right timing to pass this final nonsensical moment that threatened to ruin the game for me. But finally a Reddit post suggested turning on the QTE auto win feature. I found it buried in the menu and ended my frustration and this otherwise wonderful game that I will definitely return to again soon…

I steered clear of Avengers. But as a huge GOG fan, and having seen Vol 3 a dozen times, i took a chance on the CLOUD version of this game on switch. So it is FAR from perfect. In fact, it crashed 3 times in the first 30 min, but once it got going? Goddamn... I love this game. 🥰

This game was positively charming. I usually don’t much care for games where the main draw is the story, but this one for sure got me. I very much hope they get a chance for a sequel with basically the exact same team (or at least the same writing team). If the sequel expands upon the combat and makes it a bit more satisfying while of course telling another great story with this kind of banter and interaction, it could be truly special. And because I am a hopeless romantic, I want to see Quill and Gamora get together in it 😂😭. Based on this game alone though, doesn’t look like they are going to pursue that angle at all. Also, hopefully they push the exploration further. One problem I had is that I had Quill fully upgraded by the time we met Adam Warlock, meaning I had very little incentive to explore from that point forward. Anyways, what a great game; an extremely pleasant surprise.

I remember that i was disappointed that the translater box, never payed of in the story. Because when you find the box Peter says that maybe it can translate Groot's language, because I was always curious what Groot has to say. And they keep building that and it took so long to give it finally to Rocket, and Peter ask's if he can fix it and can maybe put a translator for GROOT. But it turns out that it can't be done because a very old language...... Like why?😭 It would be atleast somthing if Rocket figured it out in the end of the story or something.

I just played the game when it was put on Playstation premium and I really regret not buying it day one.. I knew the game would be a banger when I spent 30 minutes of the opening just listening to the starlord tape from start to finish, looking around the room, reading the booklet... It was litteraly me at 12 only in 1996.. I'm pretty sick of "cutscene" games i kinda just want to get to the gameplay so the fact I just sat in that bed for 30 minutes soaking it in speaks volumes..

No its not perfect but, I love it none the less, the characters, the writing, the humor is top notch and even the story is not too bad.. that moment in knowhere where the guards on bridge tell you to go through the alley has another moment I just loved, after going down the alley a bit you come to this ledge thing where you can put peters headphones on, lean on the railing and just listen all of the awesome soundtrack while taking in the skybox.. I spent far too long on that spot going through every song.. it was amazing moment.. also, after you complete the game you can replay chapters to get all the cosmetics..

Plus despite advertising themselves as an entry point for people who haven't played the games I think they bog themselves down with references.

You mention FF7 but I’d argue the problem there is you can NEVER settle into a good comfortable rhythm w one character bc they essentially have no system to let the others actually do anything useful. I wish we found a middle between what’s here and what is in FF7r. Something that lets you give slightly more complex commands so that If you don’t like one vibe you can change it without feeling like you’re letting an entire section of your team down.

Ngl I was so skeptical of this coz of Avengers but like the fanboy I am, I pre ordered anyway and what a nice surprise this turned out to be, I wouldn't say it's a 10/10 masterclass in gaming but the character development and story really did feel like a guardians story, I loved how collectibles tied into character and told u more about their backstory, the game seems like it was made with passion and care for the source material, the gameplay is ok but abit easy but overall, its a good game 7/10

I've never been too interested in story-driven games due to my chronic goopy goblin gamer brain, until 13 Sentinels. (A writey long long on it would be amazing, but it'd be similar to a kh novella I'd imagine) So GOTG is probably gonna go on the back-burner til' I can snag it on sale since it sounds like a blast.

You can turn off hints, if you found the visor so frustrating. Its right there in the options menu, I did this before even starting the game. I know a lot of people wanted to play as the other team members but I think that would have been thematically detrimental. Or just have a combat system that doesn't reflect the story, I know that does happen a lot but I wasn't really wanting that here. I didn't really consider the other 4 as "people I couldn't play as" in combat, they do exactly what you command them to do, when you do. If Rocket's on the other side of the room you don't wait for him to finish up his current action, he teleports to the enemy you're selecting. They function basically as extensions of yourself, the camera is just not over their shoulder. And yeah, the final fight against Raker does suck. Everything is the same shade of gold, and it reflects the less satisfying aspects of combat rather than the better parts. The fight against Magus felt like they were just trying to do the ending of the first GotG movie again. There was a ton of potential for side content that was missed, such as for obtaining outfits you missed. I think having them just available in a shop as soon as you leave the world would ruin any incentive to search them out and explore the world. But something else. At the end of the day though, I didn't really care to because they don't matter. And yes, collecting units turned out to be completely useless, they really could have done something more with it. I held onto it and then paid the fine near the end, and then it turns out that didn't matter?

The Nicki twist physically hurt me. I was, same as you, so so sure she was Peter's kid. The reveal made me geniuinely sob, not to mention the destruction of Nicki's promise. This game spoiled the MCU Guardians for me, they just aren't as well built and interesting as the Guardians as presented in-game

I think the second half of the story really drops the ball. I'd give the first half of the game like a 9/10, but only a 6/10 for the second half.

I think Guardians is better than Avengers in every way. I also think the story and characters are on parr with Spider-Man.
